LARGEST (IT¥ CIKOILATION.
WEDNESDAY MORNING May 9, 1860
[From the Savannah New* and Herald.]
The Women of Baltimore.
BY REV. GKO. G. SMITH.
‘•Dear Father pray tell us the story,
You have told us so often before ;
Os those dear an pels of mercy,
The women of Baltimore.
Pee Annie is here beside me,
And here, too, is Willie and .May ;
Oh. tell us again of their goodness,
When in the dark prison you lay.”
‘•The fight had been long and fearful,
And just as it neared its close,
t ut off from my men and wounded,
1 fell iu the bands of my foes.
They sent us away to a fortress.
Which stood out alone in its gloom ;
1 felt as I entered the portal
As tho' ’twere the gate of the tomb.
“No word conld I hear from your mother,
No word from my childreu dear,*
But lonely and gloomy I gazed out,
On the swift rolling Delaware.
Our rations were poor and were scanty.
Our clothes were thread-baro and thin ;
And fiercely and cruel and biting,
The Winter was just setting in.
Our hearts wero sinking within us ;
Already I gave you to (iod,
And felt that the Spring sun returning,
Would shed its warm beams on my ;*od.
Then eatne there the sweet words of friend
ship,
Thero came clothing ami food in great
store :
Oh ! it came like the charm of the sunlight
From the women of Baltimore.
“Oh, how many eyes wore then brightoued,
How many wan cheeks did glow ;
And stern men unconquered by guttering,
Now wept as they bowed the head low.
We buried full many a comrade
Awnv from that prison island drear,
Where no sister, no wife, and mother,
On his lone grave will drop the sad tear.
“But many a death-bed was softened,
By the dear ones I spoke of before ;
The angels in guDo of the mortals,
The women of Baltimore.
Many prayers from the lips of the dying,
Went floating on high from his cell.
For those who had heard the Christ’s bid
ding,
And labored so nobly and well.
“In the day when our father shall call us,
To give for his treasures of love,
To those who unceasingly labored.
To lay up their jewels above.
To those who heard the poor prisoner,
As he moaned in his manacles sore ;
A crown shall bo given of the brightest,
To tho women of Baltimore.”
