Stationery Packages.—Our enter

opposite Monument, hare reoeived a lot of
stationery packages, which contain two
aises of note paper, two kinds of envelopes,
a pea holder, three steel pens and a lead
pencil with India Rubber attachment, be

package, and the jewelry is thrown in. If
you want anything of this kind, give Quinn
a call.

time to spare for the society of ladies, and

possible. lie now comes out with a revised

Tug Geary's.—lt affords us pleasure ;
to that these eminent artists will
return to our city about tho end of the
present week. They have had a perfect
series of ovations, on their recent trip to
the South and West of us—ovations which
they justly deserved. We hops that they
will favor our community with more of
their select and elegant entertainments.

“My Dear,” said Mrs. Dogberry to
her daughter, “you should not hold your
dress so very high in crossing the streets.”
“Then, ina,” replied, the maiden, “how shall
I ever show the beauty of my flounced
pantalettes, that I have almost ruined my
eyesight to manufacture? I’m sure I don’t
care if the beaux do look at me.” Mrs.
Dogberry spoko of “the sin of vanity and |
the beauty of decorum,” and walked to hor
chamber.
Poisoning Flocr.—lt is said that
about hit!.'the mill owners in Orange co.,
New York, have been in the habit of filling

Revenue Stamps.—We publith the
following from the New York Ifertht, of tho
zOth Instant, which settle! the question
whether or not it is necessary to affix a
stamp on all roceipts of money over twenty
dollars. The case was tried before the
United States District Court, New York,
Judge Beuediot presiding.
ISSUING JIONBY RBCKIPTH WITHOUT TIIB
PROPER STAMPS.
The United Staten vn. Daniel P. Petern. —
This was an action under the Internal
Revenue law of 30th June, 1864. The de
fendant, proprietor of a hotel on Broadway,
coiner of Tweuty-first street, was charged
with having at several times issued seven
separate receipts for the paymonf of money,
without affixing the necessary revenue
stamp. A witness testified that the receipts
were accepted by him under protest, but
l hat Mr. Peters said he would be damned if
be would put on liny stamp or pay any
money to support the Lincoln government.
The defence was that defendant had no
intent to evade the law, und it was put on
testimony that Mr. Peters was in the habit
of keeping stamps on hand, but it was not
shown that he ever made use of them.
The jury rendered a verdict for the Gov
ernment in $1,400, the full amount of pen
alties in seven -ases in which the defendant
was charged with having evaded tho law.
For tho Government, Mr. l’helps, Assistant
United States District Attornoy. For de
fendant, Stevens A Rynert.
