LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION.
WEDNESDAY MORNING...June 13, 186#
SCISSORS.
—There is a Congressional talk at
Washington of building anew house
for the President. If it is built it will
probably be called the Black House.
—ln Chicago at night, all persons
found on the streets have to give a
satisfactory account of themselves, or
they are immediately arrested.
—A lot of mutilated currency was re
ceived lately at the Treasury Depart
ment, with the following note: “To
the Secretary of the Treasury—Sir: I
have sent he-ewith some old vetertfns
who have done the country some ser
vice, and are ready to be mustered
out.”
—During the two months ending
May 12th, there was. in the city of New
York, 22 deaths from starvation, 127
deaths from accidents and negligence,
22 from drunkenness, and 10 suicides.
The deaths from accident and negli.
gence present quite as frightful a re
cord.
—The iron car of the Adam’s Ex
press Company, which went from New
Y'ork to Boston recently, contained
about $7,000,000. Two trusty messen
gers and a detective accompanied it.
Two well known burglars were known
to be on the train, but found no chauce
for operations.
—A Boston newspaper says that the
most chaste writer of the present age is
the Editor of the Memphis Appeal, who
was chased from Memphis to Grenada,
from Grenada to Clinton, from Clinton
to Jackson and so on to Atlanta, and
from there to the Atlantic.
—A number of young Germans en
gaged in commercial pursuits are now
compelled to leave London, having re'
ceived orders to join the Prussiau and
Saxon armies. If they do not obey the
summons they lose lights of citizenship,
aud any property they may inherit is
forfeited.
—A picture in Punch, called “Rather
Cute,” represents a man at a ticket
office. “Look here !” he says, “you
didn’t give me the right change just
now 1” Clerk—“ Too late, sir l You
should have spoken when you took
your ticket.” Passenger—“ Should I ?
Well, it’s of no consequence to me ; but
you gave me half a sovereign too much.”
Exit. -
—A gentleman who owns a planta
tion in Alabama had instructed his
overseer to give him reports of affairs.
Last week ho received the following
note, which graphically described the
situation: “Mr. : It rained Mon
day. It rained Tuesday. It rained
Wednesday. It rained Thursday, and
Ifriday we had the hardest rain this
week. Grass crop encouraging.” —Col
umbus Sun.
—The ladies of the Hebrew faith in
Richmond have formed a Memorial
Association, for the purpose of bestow
ing proper cure on the graves of the
dead Confederate soldiers of their peo
ple. Mrs; Solomon Davis is the Presi
dent, and Mrs. Abraham Levi the Sec
retary, of the Association. Between
forty and fifty young Jews, who were
killed in battie or died in hospital, are
buried in the Jewish Cemetery of Rich
mond.
—A French workman has just com
pleted, for the Duke of Wellington, a
watch of novel and peculiar construction,
the idea of which was conceived by the
Duke himself, who is well known to be
of an impatient temper, and cannot pass
half an hour in any one’s society without
feeling an irresistible inclination to look
at his watch. Now, it is exceedingly
impolite, particularly in England, to
draw forth a watch in presence of ladies,
and the Duke has hit upon an ingenious
plan to ascertain the hour without any
one present being the wiser for it. The
watch manufactured for him is a silent
repeater. It is provided with a spring,
upon touching which a small hammer
issues from the case and strikes the hour
in the palm of the person’s hand who
holds it. The Duke will merely need to
slip his hand carelessly into his pocket,
touch the spring, and he is immediately
informed of the time of day.

RIGHT OF THE
PATENT MICA ROOFING,
We are now prepared to supply it in any
quantity, or to appiv it to loot's.
Tbe MICA HOOFING is adapted to build
ings of every description, and can be ap
plied to Steep or Flat Roofs, or over old
Shingle removing the shin
gles. We recommend its use on Factories,
Foundries, Store Houses, Cotton Sheds,
Railroad Depots nnd upon all buildings
where steam is used, and a Fire Proof re
quired.
It costs about one-half tbe price of
Tin.
It is cheap, durable, and is easily and
quiekly applied. The upper surface of tbe
Roofing is protected from tbe action of tbe
weather, by its covering of Ground Mica,
which is pressed into tbe water proof com
position, making a hard surface of stone,
beautiful in appearance, and a sure protec
tion against tiro.
We shall also keep constantly on band a
supply of
INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT,
which is the best coating that can be used
for Tin Roofing. Leaky Tin Roofs can be
readily repaired, so as to last many years,
at a trifling cost, which would in many
cases save the expense of anew Roof.
