LARGEST CITY CIK( ILATION.
THURSDAY MORNING June It Hu«
SCISSORS.
—Six inches of snow in Claremont,
N. H., last week.
—There have been three hundred and
seventy fires in New York during the
last five months.
—One little military preparation in
France is the purchase of 15,000 artil
lery horses.
—/In insurance agent in Memphis
has presented each member of the Fire
Department of that citv a policy of
SI,OOO, insuring them against accidents
of every description.
—A house in Buffalo, N. Y., was
blown to pieces the other day, the pas
having escaped from the pines, and
some one going into a room v,i.h a
lighted candle.
—The Boston Past says that a young
man in Pennsylvania, who was sued
for breach of promise, urged in defence
that the lady weighed 285 lbs., and that
it was coming warm weather. Sufficient
excuse.
—An exchange paper says . “Wo
laid before our readers last week, a
nasty sketch of the proceedings of Con
gress.'' Ihe editor undoubtedly meant
to say a hi,sly sketch, but the types
evidently knew the propriety of names
better than he did.
—An experienced Sumter planter in
forms the Darlington Southern-r that
the surest way of testing cotton seed is
by subjecting it to fire. If it explodes,
it is sound and good—if it burns with
out exploding, it is worthless.
—The New York Times says of Gen.
Scott: “He wa more jealous of bis
literary than of his miiit iry fame. He
would endure criticism in reference to
his battles with equanimity, but in mat
ters of taste in literature, nr even of
punctuation, ho could nut brook contra
diction.”
—Tennyson is fifty-three years old;
has a weak mice and shuttling gait ;
wears glasses most of the time; generally
dresses in gray clo ltes; has a melan
choly, ruminating voice; and wears,
when his features are in repose, an ex
pression of classical, habitual sadness.
—The Wesleyan Methodists, some
time ago, built a hall in Bishopsgate
street, London, a freehold, which cost
them £35,000. They have been recently
offered £157,000 for the property. In
the course of evidence given recently
before the Deputy Recorder of London,
it was stilted that laud near St. Paul's
Churchyard was worth one million
pounds per acre.
—Tho following gives a list of the
Bishops of the “Episcopal Methodist
Church,” with their salaries: Bishop
Soule, $1,500 ; Bishop Pierce, $3,000 ;
Bishop Early. $2,500; Bishop Kava
naugh, $2,500 ; Bishop Andrew, $2,500;
Bishop Paine, $3,000; Bishop Wight
man, $3,000 : Bishop Marvin, $3,000 ;
Bishop McTyeire, $3,000; Bishop Dog
gett, $3,000.
—The Breubum (Texas) Banner
says that, under the benign and foster
ing care of the “Bureau,” the freedmen
of Brenliain are achieving a state of
almost complete perfection in the highly
important, useful, and refined business
of marble playing. At almost any hour
of the day large numbers of able bodied
freedtnen may be seen in the streets
engaged in the exercise of this inter
esting game ; and the expertness with
which they “plump the middle man,”
keep from “getting fat,” and cry out
“vent duhs,” or “don't fudge,” is exhid
rating and instructive.
—A lady residing in Campton reeent
iy owned a dog which, because of age
and iufirmity, had ceased to be of use.
One day she remarked to a laboring
man connected with the lauiily, that she
wou'd give him half a dollar if he would
take the old fellow off out of the way
and kill him. The servant promised to
do so if he might have the dog’s skin to
make therefrom, for his own use and
comfort, a pair of gloves. At this stagi
in the conversation tho old dog, win
had been lying quietly upon the hearth
arose, and giving the conspirators a loo!,
more in sorrow than in anger, left tht
house. On a rise of ground not iat
away h? stopped, and gave a linger in;
gaze at the house and vicinity, tLet
plunged into the wooods, never to re
turn. He never was seen or heard ol
afterward. Coneord State own.
