—General Grant has been invited to

July, and it is said lie is confidently
expected at forty-five of them.
—lt is stated that George Peabody
intends to make a splendid donation to
some great charity in the United States.
—Henry A. Wise, in a letter de
clining an invitation to a public din tier

thrown from a baggage car, in which he
was riding, on the 12th instant, and iu
stuiitiy killed, the train running over his
body. T ANARUS, , .
—ln November last the number of
Indians in the Southern Supcriutenden
cy, requiring subsistence, was 30,770,
and the number to be clothed was 32,270
They will starve if not relieved by the
Government. An appropriation for their
relief of §750.000 is asked.
Stonewall Jackson never would
open a letter which came to him on
Sunday, nor ever, if he could help it,
send away a Tetter which, in the ordi
nury course of mail, would have to
make any part of its journey on that
day.
—On the body of.,a, soldier recently
exhumgd, was found a pocket book
containing a considerable sum
Such instances do not often occur.
With many bodies are found daguerreo-.
types; which are clear and distinct
when taken from the ground, but speed-'

—The Albany (17. Y.) Knickerbocker
relates the case of a child born with
only one arm. The child’s mother is
the w ife of a soldier, and some months
ago was greatly alarmed lest her bus
band's wounded arm would have to be
amputated.
—The City Council of Newbern, N.
C., by a vote of four to one, have de
cided that so long as their representa

the Government cannot expect them
to do honor to the flag, and therefore it
shall not be raised over the City Hall.
—On the 18th instant, a Presbyte

—The Jonesboro’ (Tenn.) Flag of
Friday comes to us with an eight-column

—lt is said that advices have been

—The consumption of ivory in the
world requires a great destruction of
elephants, the number annually killed
to supply the establishments at Shef

The supply drawn from the walrus, nar

ivory comes from Africa.
—People who live in the neighbor
