and the prospects for corn are good.
A rattlesnake, eight feet long, was
killed by the police of New Orleans, on
the lltb inst., in a gutter iu the heart of
the city.
—A man in Caledonia, N. Y., has
succeeded in raising 100,000 young
trouts, for which there is a lively de
mand at $.50 per thousand, to stock the
neighboring ponds and streams.
—There were formerly 500 Churches
in Moscow, hut the Emperor Nicholas
considered it too many for a respectable
community, and 300 were, by his order
torn down.
—Dr. J. B. Irving, late of Charles
ton, S. C., has been elected Secretary of
the American Jockey Club, of New
York, of which August Belmont is Pres
ident.
—A late Bremen letter announces
the departure from that German port
of Kitj passengers, all of whom intend
making Texas their home. Other ves
sels will shortly follow.
—The Richmond Times says that
Bishop Early, and the others who suf
fered more severely by the late disaster
on the Danville Rail Road, are iu a fair,
way of recovery and will soon be able to
be taken to their homes.
—Count W'alewski, the illegitimate
son of the first Napoleon, by the Polish
Countess Walewski, formerly Minister
of Foreign Affairs, and now President
of the Imperial Senate, has been, by
the favor of his Imperial cousin, created
a Duke of the Empire, with the title of

—New counterfeit fifty dollar green

The bills are excellently engraved, ex

, —ln the course of the last month a

head, received the contents, falling dead
in the middle of the saloon. The animal

—The Fayetteville News calls the
North Carolina .State Convention “an
imposture,” and says: “It represents
only the most disreputable set of black
guards who ever reflected disgrace on
the country, and is a disgrace even to
the contemptuous party of Holdenites,
who, although they never had any claim
to gentility or decency, are even the
more nastily bespattered with the filth
ot dishonor, because of the connection
the Convention has with them.”
A Raw Orator.— An orator, in ap
pealinsr to the “hone and sinew,” said :
“My friends, I am proud to see around ,
me to-night the hardy yeomanry of the
land, for I love the agricultural interests
of the country; and well may I love
them, fellow-citizens, for I was horn a
farmer ; the happiest days of my youth
were spent in the peaceful avocations ot
the sou of the soil. If I may be allowed
to use a figurative expression, my
friends, I may say I was raised between
two rows of corn.” “A pumpkin, by

Roofing.
LOOK TO YOUR ROOFS.
Having secured the state
RIGHT OF THE
PATENT MICA ROOFING,
AYe are now prepared to supply it in any
quantity, or to appiv it to Hoofs.
The MICA ROOFING is adapted to build
ings o'* every description, and can bo ap
plied to Steep or Flat Roofs, or over old
Shingle Roofs, without removing the shin
gles. We recommend it3 use on Factories,
Foundries, Store Houses, Cotton Sheds,
llaiiroad Depots and upon all buildings
where steam is used, and a Fire Froof re
quired.
It costs about one-half the price of
Tin.
It is obenp, durable, and is easily and
quiekly applied. The upper surfaco of the
Roofing is protected from the action of the
weither, by its covering of Ground Mica,
which is pressed iufco the water proof com
position, making a hard surfaco of stone,
beautiful in appoarauco, and a sure protec
tion against fire.
We shall also keep constantly on hand a
supply of
INDIA-RUBBER ROOFING PAINT,
which is the best coating that can bo used
for Tin Roofing. Leaky Tin Roofs cau be
readily repaired, so as to last many years,
at a trifling cost, which would in many
cases save the expense of anew Roof.
Full directions for applying, and prices,
sent on application.
