SCISSORS.
—lt is positively asserted that Gov
ernor Fenton hits pardoned young
Ivetchum, the Wall street forger.
—On a child being told that he must
be broken of a bad habit, he honestly
replied, “Pa, hadn’t I better be mended!”
—The financial panic in England has
affected Rio Janeiro, and several failures
have occurred in that city.
—On Tuesday tho thermometer in
New York went up to 96, and there were
live cases of sun stroke.
—Julia Deane llayne will be the
leading woman at one of tho St. Louis
theatres next week.
—What sort of a sore throat is the
best for a singer to reach the high notes
with ? A sore throat.
—Artemus Ward was met, on his
landing in England with an offer of
.£4,009 and all expenses paid for a lec
turing tour of six months.
—A company has bought the Gettys
burg battle field springs property, and
will erect a soldier hospital or watering
place upon it.
—One of the broadest hints to pop
the question which is possible for a
young lady to give a young gentleman
is to declare her intention of never mar
rying.
—A lady who wished some stuffing
from a roasted duck, which a gentleman
was carving at a public table, requested
him to transfer from the deceased fowl
to her plate some of its artificial intest
tines. .
—The Earl of Chesterfield, whose
death is announced in the last foreign
news, was a zealous sportsman, and won
more prizes than any other owner of
horses on the English turf. He is said
to have spent a large fortune in gratify
ing his racing propensities.
—The Southwestern Railway Com
pany, of England, possesses a monster
engine named Colossus. It has been
built to draw a train of eighty loaded
wagons eighty miles in three hours, eacli
loaded wagon weighing about ten tons.
It can drag nearly one thousand tons
from Loudon to Southampton with al
most the speed of a bird flying.
—A New York elegante is now ar
rayed in very tight pants, so tight that
in the effort to stoop, the person thus
dressed feels himself unexpectedly
straightened; sack coats are so short
that they somewhat resemble a sailor’s
round jacket; the vest buttoned close
to tho throat. In addition to these, a
turn-over collar of the Shakespere style,
and a narrow rimmed hat. The preva
lent color varies from a reddish brown
to a brindle brow-n. Many of the most
dressy dandies wear coats, vests and
pants of the same color.
Interesting Jewish Ceremony.—
A ceremony took place recently’, in
the Synagogue of the Congregation,
“Aderalh El,” in Twenty-ninth Street,
near Lexington-ave, New York, which
rarely occurs among our Jewish fellow
citizens. It was the consecration of a
new “Sepher Thora,” —“Scroll of the
Law.” These Scrolls of the Law, of
which every Synagogue possesses seve
ral copies, are copies of the one written
by Ezra, the Scribe, some two thousand
years ago, and, like ancient manuscripts
rolled around two wooden rollers. Un
like other manuscripts, every letter is
peculiarly shaped, and as the entire
work has to be done with pen and ink,
so carefully that no erasure is allowed,
several months are required to finish
one of these scrolls.
The one consecrated on this occasion
was especially written for the congrega
tion and finished, except the first word
and the last six words of the Holy’Writ.
To write the twenty-seven letters, or
rather paint over the traced outlines,
was reserved for the members of the
congregation; for it is written in the
Talmud, the great Jewish tradition, that
he who gives a Holy Scroll, or even
writes a letter in one, shall be remem
bered in his descendants to the end of
time.
On the effects of a decollete dress:
That “effects are the same from a similar
cause,”
Is one of* the famous Socratien laws,
Whose fallacy we may discover;
For, quite iu the teeth of the logical rule,
The style of apparel that keeps Emma cool,
Just kindles a flame in her lover.
