SATURDAY MORNING..!...JuIy 7, 1866
SCISSORS.
—A fashionable party lately arrived
at Newport with 800 parcels of luggage.
—Crinoline is far from being abandpned,
but it is by no means carried to the same
excess in- Paris as in this country.
—lt has been determined to build a
bridge over the Cape Fear River, at
Wilmington. ‘
—Two magnificent sleeping cars for
the Wilmington and Manchester Rail
Road have arrived at the former place.
—-Some slandering bachelor says it is
much joy when you first get married,
but it is much more jawy after a year
or so.
—“lf,” as the poet says, “beauty
draws us with a single hair,” then what—
oh tell us what—must be the effect? of a
modern waterfall.
—Most of women are endowed with
such naturally endearing charms, that
oven their very presence is generally
benefieial.
—ln the choice of a lover, women
consider more how he appears in the
eyes of other women than in their own.
Love is more pleasing than matrimony,
just as romancer is more pleasing than
history.
—Governor■ Patton, in his late letter
to Congress, makes the startling an.
nouuccment ( thivl- there are fully twenty
thousand widows and ‘sixty thousand
orphans (whites) in Alabama, and
three-fourths of them are destitute.
—Prentice says that the Southern
States are 1 better represented In Con
gress now than some of the Northern
States, for the reason that non-repre
sentation is better than misrepresenta
tion. This is literally and rigidly true.
—The Savannah News says there are
perhaps one hundred saw mills in ope
ration on the Georgia coast, which are
receiving orders From all parts of the
world for every description of lumber.
—lt is stated that nobody knew any
thing of the ironing of Jefferson Davis
except Stanton, who sent Baker down
expressly to order the manacling to be
doneu
—Sacqnes, without sleeves,'to match
the dress are almost universally worn,
and they are so cool and thin and light
that there is little doubt they will become
more and more general so long as the
warm weather continues.
—The Detroit Advertiser is responsi'
ble for the following: “About one year
ago one of our business men visited
New York city, and while there ordered
a half dozen cartes de visile of himself,
which he distributed among his friends
in that place. A few days ago he was
surprised to find one of those ‘counter
feit resemblances’ in possession of the
family cook. An investigation into the
matter disclosed the fact that she had
received it from a fortune teller in New
York city, who advertised to forward a
correct likene9s, of any young lady’s
future husband, all tor the sum of fifty
cents,, prhich amount the cook had re
mitted, according to the advertisement,
and received her employer’s likeness in
return.”
A New Orator. —ln an article on
the displays of eloquence called forth
by the debate in the House of Commons
on the Reform bill, a London paper thus
speaks of Mr. Robert Lowe, whom it
designates “the hero of the Reform de
bate “His success is at once daz
zling and unprecedented. There have
been instances of men entering the
House, and at one bound becoming a
power. So it was with Pitt. So with
Peel. So with Mr. Gladstone. But
the case of Mr. Lowe is altogether dif
ferent. He has been in the House for
years. He has been in office. Yet
no one dreamed that he was one of the
most powerful debaters of the House,
and one of the finest orators of the age.
He was known to be a clever man, a
classical scholar, aud a ready speaker,
but, until the|late Reform debate, no one
rightly estimated the true force of his
intellect or the inimitable vigor of his
eloquence. Though long on the stage,
his magnificent gifts were latent, and the
Reform debate has bronght them to our
knowledge. Os the three speeches he
delivered ou Reform, the last was the
best. A move finished and beautiful
oration could not well be composed.”
