City Printer —Official Paper
LARGEST CITYCIBCPLATION.
WEDNESDAY MORNING July 11, 1866
SCISSORS.
—Courting is like eating strawberries
and cream ; wants to be did slow, then
you get the flavor.
—A citizen of Springfield, Illinois,
having reported bis income, will now
refuse to-pay his income tax, resisting
its collection on the ground of the un
constitutionality of the tax.
—Never look at tho girls. They ean’t
bear it. They regard it as an insult.
They wear their feathers, furbelows and
frills merely to gratify their mammas,
that’s all.
—There are, on the average, four or
five thousand prosperous Americans
temporarily or permanently residing in
England.
—The biggest tree yet discovered in
California is fifty two feet five inches in
diameter, or over one hundred and fifty
feet in circumference. Only the stump
is left.
—The watermelon crop in Fltfrida
was never better than this season. The
melons are large, (air and fine, and com
mand remunerative figures.
—The New Jersey negroes have em
ployed General Benjamin F. Butler to
claim for them the right to vote iu that
State.
—lt is considered important enough
to publish in Paris that the Empress of
the French wears spurs when riding.
Her horse is trained to their use.
—The doorkeeper of the House of
Commons was puzzled as to the sex of
the Chinese ambassadors, and doubtful
as to admitting them.
—John A. Heyl, a German, of Boston,
has invented anew method of lighting
the street lamps with electricity, by
means of which every lamp in the city
can be lighted simultaneously or singly,
at the pleasure of the operator.
-An association of workmen in Lan
cashire, England, has a'dopleu a’g' it/
motto : “Eight hours’ work, eight hours’
play, eight hours’ sleep, aud eight shill
ings a day.”
—Under the head of scientific intelli
gence, Punch says at the next meeting
of the Horticultural Society a paper will
be read “On the Coolness of the Cu
cumber.”
—Hon. Hannibal Hamlin, who has
been laid up with rheumatism in Bangor,
has recovered sufficient strength to draw
his salary m Boston.
—A Frenchman who proposed estab
lishing a school having heard that a
high school would be more respectably
patronized, took rooms iu the garret of
a four-story house.
—The annual income of Wendell
Phillips is sixty thousand dollars. The
Cleveland Plainctcaler remarks that the
statement should go with it, which will
hardly he denied, that Phillips inherited
his wealth from ancestors who accumu
lated immense fortunes by the mauufae
tore of and traffic iu Now England rum,
and by the African slave trade.
—We hear of a wonderful “growing
spell” out of town. Corn shoots up
with a vigor that can be seen in the
growing. Vines run along the ground
almost as fast as little dogs, and nature
is in a sort of jubilee condition. The
early fruits will rapidly mature under
“this sun of ours,” whatever discomfort
comes of it to imperilled humanity.
—Tho Boston Journal says that a
gentleman of that city who returned a
very large income for 1865, has, since
the publication of the fact, received
six to twenty letters from all parts of
the country, asking loans of sums, vary
ing from ten dollars to fifty thousand
dollars. Yesterday he was requested to
lift the mortgages on two Churches,
and the mercury was 94 in the shade.
