Masonic Presentation.—A most in
teresting affair came off on Monday
ivening last, which we take pleasure in
recording, as connected with it is one of
iar most esteemed and deserving citi
lens —one whom we are proud to call
Rur friend, and to know ig worthy of the
Compliment whioh has been so neatly
and appropriately bestowed upon him-
The members of Webb Lodge, No.
166, of Masons, of this city, deiirous of
showing their appreciation of the ser
tices of W.\ M.\ Christopher F. Lew A,'
presented him with a Jewel, Collar and
Apron. The Jewel is an elaborate piece
es workmanship, gotten op by Rio. F.
Crane. -< y . - (t .’
| Bro. Lewis pas taken , quite riby sur
prise, as *hi was kept in entire igno
rance of the affair, which added all the
snore to its interest.
Judge Gibson, on presenting these
tokens of fraternal appreciation, spoke
as follows:
“Esteemed Bbother Lewis: . /
j .“In behalf of the Brethren of Webb*a
Ledge, it affords me great pleasure to
present yon with this, the Master’s Jewel,
Collar and Apron, in token of their
Hgh esteem and appreciation or your
long, efficient and faithful services as
their v Worshipful.Master. Whilst mem
ory lasts, you will ever be cherished by
the brotherhood *, and as a living mani
festation and memento of our high es
teem for you, this presentation and offer
ing is made. This Jewel, When worthily
worn, is of priceless value —-you know Hi
significance. This pure white Apron,
the emblem of innocence and virtue, is
to a Mason also precious. Accept them,
thejymy Brother, at their true Masonic
value, and you will then have but a faint
idea of the esteem in which you are
held by the Brethren. Your wise coun
sels, dignified deportment, pure life, and
charitable band, have made a lasting
impression upon us all, and we trust
that many have been profited thereby.
“Silence and secrecy have long-been
cardinal virtues with Masons. It is true
Omniscience speaks; but how 7 As the
fragrance of the rose is diffused, and os
the sun imparts its rays, so Creation
itself came forth, as permeated in si
lence ; and the sun, moon and stars
move in their gigantic Orbits with almost
lightning, speed, and yet in profound
silence I Nature, both animate and in
afeiqatq, gushes forth ju all bee varied
forms of beauty, grandeur and magnifi
cence, yet still in silence I
“.It is true the tempests may howl,
billows surge, and thunders roll, and the
lamentations of man and beasts be
heard, but they soon pasa away, and
silence again reigns. “He that keepeth
his month, keepeth his soul; Rut he
that hath no guard on his speech shall
meet with evils.” It is the strong, vivi
fying sap aud nourishment that em
balms every action and feeds every
virtue. In silence, secresy, and soli
tude, we may strengthen our unfeebled
souls, and approuch so close to the
fountain of all light as to radiate its
genial, soothiug rays and divine nature,
even into oun benighted hearts. Thus
enlightened, may we not put forth
energetic efforts to execute the designs
drawn upon the trestle-board by buy
Divine Master? It is within these
sacred halls that your true character
has been delineated. It is here where
the ark _of the covenant—the vase of
true manna—Aaron’s rod, upon which
the lily of JCase was seen .VUtDuing—
and the table of gold upon which God
himself deposited his holy word—here
where great truths are developed, and*
every virtue that your great
est efforU have been made. May; you
ever so live and act j and after death;
become a living soul and bright light
In the mansions of heavenly felicity, as
your-memory wilt ever bedenthriaeA in
the hearts of all true brother* of the
mystic tie.”
