City Printer—Official Paper
LARGEST CITY (’IKCULATION.
WEDNESDAY MORNING...Sept. 26,^86*
THE LONE SENTEY.
U y .JAMES R. RANDALL.
‘Twos in the dying of the day,
The darkness grew so still,
The drowsy pipe of evening birds
Was hushed upon the hill.
Athwart the shadows of the vale,
Slumbered tho monos might,
And the lone*entry paced his rounds
To guard the camp that night.
A grave and solemn man was ho,
With deop and sombre brow,
Tbo dreamful eyes seem boarding up
Some unaccomplished vow ;
His wistful eyes gazed o’er the plain,
Beneath the starry light,
And with the murmured name of God,
He watched the camp that night.
The future opened unto him
Its grand and awful scroll—
Manassas and the valley march
Came heaving o’er his soul—
Richmond and Sharpsburg thundered by
With that tremendous fight,
Which gave him to the angel host
That watched the camp that night.
We mourn for him who died for us,
With one resistless moan ;
While up tho Valley of tho Lord
He marches to the throne.
Ho kept tho faith of men and saints
Sublime, and pure, and bright;
lie sleeps—and all is well with him
Who watched tho camp that night.
Brothers ! the midnight of the cause
Is shrouded in our fate;
The demon Goths pollute our halls
With fire, and lust, and hato;
Bo strong —be valiant—be assured —
Strike home for Iloaven and Right.!
Tho soul of Jackson stalks abroad
And guards tho camp to-night!

We beg to call tbs attention of the pub
lie to this long tested and unrivalled '
FAMILY MEDICINE.
The PAIN KILLER is a purely reset
ble compound ; snd while it is a most *.
eient Remedy for Pain, it is s perfectly safe
Medicine even in the most unskillful hands.
FOR BUMMER COMPLAINT,
Or any other form of bowel disease in chil.
dren or adults, it it an almost certain core
snd bos, without doubt, been more success
ful in curing the various kinds of
CHOLERA
than any other known remedy, or oven the
most skillful physician. In India, Africa
and ChiDa, where this dreadful disease ij
ever more or less prevalent, the
PAIN KILLER
is considered by the natives, as well as Eu
ropean residents in those climates, s SURE
REMEDY'. Asa Tonic for the Stomach, it
is unrivalled. A few doses will relieve se
vere cases of INDIGESTION, and it is
often a perfect cure fer
DYSPEPSIA,
in its most aggravated forms. Its tonic and
stimulating properties, arousing the system
to vigor and action, render it a most effec
tual cure for COLDS AND COUGHS, when
used according to directions.
For external applications, it is unsur
passed by any medical preparation.
Rheumatism and Neuralgic Affections are
quickly relieved and often cured by it. Any'
Soreness in the Muscles or Joints can be
relieved by its application. It cures in
stantly tho most violent
TOOTHACHE.
•
It should always be kept near at hand,
to be used in cases of severe BURNS or
SCALDS. If applied immediately, accord
ing to directions, it will give instant relief,
and prevent blistering.
It is peculiarly adapted to the wants of
SEAMEN, and persons making sea voy
ages, and no vessel should sail without a
supply of it. One Captain writes us: “I
have made several voyages—often with emi
grants, and though I keep a good Medicine
Chest, and I have several times had a good
deal of sickness on board, I have found the
PAIN KILLER so efficient in all cases, as
to entirely preclude the use of all other
Medicines.”
