LARGEST Cl TY CIRCULATION.
THURSDAY MORNING...Sept. 27,
The Cottage on the Hill.
BT PAUL H. HAYNE.
On A steep bill-tide to nil airs that blow
Open, and open to tbe varying sky,
Smiles our small cottage home, which
tranquilly
Catohet morn’s earliest and eve’s latest
glow,.
Here, far from worldly strifes and pompous
show,
Tbe peaceful seasons glide benignly by,
Fulfil their missions and calmly die
At waves on quiet shores when winds are
low j
Fields, lonely paths, the one small glim
mering rill
That twinkles like a wood-fay’s mirthful
eye
’Neath tbe moist bay-leaves—clouds fan
tastical
That float and ohange at tbe light breeses’
will;
To me, thus lapped in sylvan luxury,
Aro moro than death of kings or empires’
fall.
' AFTER.
BY GKORGE COOrEft.
After tho Bbower, the tranquil sun ;
After tbe snow, the emerald leaves ;
Silver stars when the day is done;
After the harvost, golden sheaves.
After the clouds, the violot sky ;
After the tempest, the lull of waves;
Quiet woods when the winds go by;
After the battle, peaceful graves.
After the knell, the wedding bells;
After the bud, the radiant rose ;
Joyful greetings from sad farewells ;
Aftet our weeping, sweet repose.
After tbe burden, tho blissful meed ;
After the flight, the downy nest;
After the furrow, the waking seed;
After tho shadowy river—rest.
