City Printer—Official Paper
LARGEST CItTcIHWIATION
SATURDAY MORNING OtU 10, ISOO
The following line* were written br
Tyrone Power, the famous Irish
Comedian, who perished on the ste»me r
Preeident. They were inscribed cn the
wall of the “Old Ilian ford Church,"
near Petersburg, Va.:
Than art trembling te the dust, old pi!*!
Thus art hastening to thy tail;
And amend time. In thy loneliness-!
Cling* the ivy to the wall:
The worshipper* are scattered now,
Who knelt before thy shrine.
And tilenoe reigns where anthems rosa,
In days of “Auld Lang Syne.”
And sadly sight the wandering wind.
Where oft, in years gone by.
Prayer* roae from man* hearts to Him,
The Highest of the High.
The tramp of many a busy foot
That sought thy aisles is o’er.
And many a weary heart around
It still for evermore.
How doth ambition's hope take wing* !
How droop* the spirit now !
We hear the distant city’* din
The dead are mute below ;
The *an that *hoao upon their path*
Now gilds their lonely graves,
The uphvr* which once fanned their brows
The grass above them waves.
0! oould we call the many back,
Who’ve gathered here in vain—
Who've careless roved where we do now.
Who'll never meet again !
How would our very hearts be stirred
To meet the earliest gate,
Os the lovely and the beautiful
The lights of olher days !
Cor \t Bismark at the Bkkux Fes
tivities. —The Berlin correspondent of
the Daily Telegraph thus describes the
appearance of Count Bismark in the
procession on the triumphant return
of the Prussian army ou the 20th in
stant :
“ For my part, I own I could spare
but little attention to the King himselt
A few yards further on there stood a
group of horsemen. One was Genera!
Yon Roon. the Minister of war; an
other was General Moltke, the soldier,
to whom more than to any single person
the conduct and conception of the cam
paign are due. On the extreme right,
in the white uniform of a major of the
landwehr cuirassiers, a broad-shoul--
dered, short-necked man sat mounted
on a brown bay mare. Very still and
silent the rider sits, waiting patiently
.ill the interview between the King and
the civic worthies is concluded. The
akin of the face is parchment-colored,
with dull, leaden-hued blotches about
the chee ks ; the eyes are bloodshot;
the veins about the forehead are swol
len ; the great heavy helmet presses
upon the wrinkled brow. The man
looks as if he had risen from a sick bed
which he never ought to have left.
That is Count Bismark-Schonhausen,
Prime Minister of Prussia.
"Tertcraay he was said to bo well
nigh dying ; ugly rumors tloated about
the town ; his doctors declared that rest,
absolute rest, was the only remedy upon
which they could base their hopes for
his recovery. But today it was impor
tant that the Premier should show him
self. The iron will, which had never
swerved before any obstacle, was not to
be daunted by physical pain or to he
swayed by medical remonstrances. And
so, to the astonishment of all who knew
how critical his state of health had been
but a few hours before, Count Bismark
put on his uniform and rode out to-day
to take his place in the Royal cortege.
Even now the man who has made a
united Germany a possibility, and has
raised Prussia from the position of a
second-rate Power to the highest rank
amongst Continental empires, is but
scantily honored in his own country;
and the cheers with which he was
greeted were tame compared with those
which welcome*] the generals who had
been the instruments of the work his
brain bad planned. But to those, I
think, who looked at all beyond the ex
citement of the day, the true hero of
that brilliant gathering was neither king,
nor princess of the blood royal, generals
nor soldiers, but the sallow, livid-looking
statesman, who was thgre in spite of
racking pain and doctors’ advice and
the commonest caution, in order that
his work might be completed to the end.”
Lotai.tv vh. Dhh.oyai.ty.—The Ra
dical conception of loyalty and disloy
alty is much the same everywhere.
Wbat that conception is was graphically
illustrated in one of the registry'offices
in Missouri, some days ago. A citizen
named Richardson came to register his
name, when another citizen interposed
an objection.
Richardson—“ Well, Mr. TANARUS., what do
yon know about me?’’
T—“You are disloyal.”
R—“ Why ?”
T—“ Because you've refused to sub
scribe for Browulow’g book, fll| d said
‘d—n Brownlow and his book!”’
The word “ disloyalty ” is constantly
on the lips of Radical fanatics when
speaking of their political opponents.
Ask any of them why this or that man
is disloyal, and it will be impossible to
obtain a more reasonable answer than
the foregoing. Because men refuse to
subscribe to the incendiary dogmas of
Radicalism, they are “ disloyal;” be
cause they do subscribe to them tliey
are “ loyal.” This is the Radical cou
ception of loyalty.— Chicago Time*.
Immiosation.—We observed yester
days number of wagons passing through
the City, with families'co route from
South Carolina to South western Geor
gia. It is to be hoped that they will lind
the change profitable uml pleasant.
A Wkhtkrn editor lately lost his

PERRY DAVIS’
VEGETABLE
a. in
We beg to call He attention of the pub
lic to this long tested aDd unrivalled
FAMILY MEDICINE.
The PAIN KILLER is a purely vegeta
ble compound; and while it is a most e -
cient Remedy for Pain, it is a perfectly safe
Medicine even in the most unskillful hands.
FOR SUMMER COMPLAINT,
Or any other form of bowel disease in chil
dren or adults, it is an almost certain cure,
and has, without doubt, been more success
ful in caring the various kinds of
CHOLERA
than any other known remedy, or even the
most skillful physician. In India, Africa
and China, where this dreadiul disease is
ever more or less prevalent, the
PAIN KILLER
is considered by the natives, as woll as Eu
ropean residents in those climates, a SURE
REMEDY. Asa Tonic for the Stomach, it
is unrivalled. A few doses will relieve se
vere coses of INDIGESTION, and it is
often a perfect cure for
DYSPEPSIA, io
in its most aggravated forms. Its tonic and
stimulating properties, arousing the system
to vigor and action, render it a most effec
tual cure for COLDS AND COUGHS, when
used according to directions.
For external applications, it is unsur
passed by any medical preparation.
Rheumatism aud Neuralgic Affections are
quickly relieved and often cured by it. Any
Soreness in the Muscles or Joints can be
relieved by its application. It euros in
stantly the most violent
TOOTHACHE.
It should always be kept near at hand,
to be used in cases of severe BURNS or
SCALDS. If applied immediately, accord
ing to directions, it will give instant relief,
and prevent blistering.
It is peculiarly adapted to the wants of
SEAMEN, and persons making sea voy
ages, and no vessel should sail without a
supply of it. One Captain writes us: “I
have made several voyages—often with emi
grants, and though I keep a good Medicine
Chest, and I have several times had a good
deal of sickness on board, I hare found the
PAIN KILLER so efficient in all cases, as
to entirely preclude the use of all other
Medicines.”
