—A Kentucky gentleman, n friend of
onn, bad noma dealing! with the Bart
lett Sewing Machine Company, of
Toledo, Ohio, and found them in the
end an sharp aa needles, and as cool an
the gelid waters of Erie in winter. They
sold him a machine and took his money
in payment therefor, with the promise,
ht says, of swapping back in case the
mschinn should* not fulfil all the antici
pations raised in £is mind. by the elo
quence ’of their representations. It is
needless to say that be found himself
the victim of misplaced confidence, both
as to the machine and as to the Com
pany. He sent them back their me-'
chine and requested them to return his
money. They returned tfic machine in
stead, and the following spicy letter,
which wc publish as a warning to all
men to transact with home merchants
and let those distant Companies alone.—

Sia: Your letter at hand and machine
is this day sent yoa by express. We
enclose new directions with this which
are more in detail than the other.
Your charge of awiudle is easier to
make than to prove. We do not do a
swindling business, but should we ever
do it, we should take more pleasure in
swindling Kentucky people than any
other set of human beings on earth.
Am astonished you have so little confi
dence in us Yanks, after being whipped
so badly as you Rebels have been (not
| enough yet). We would naturally
suppose you would have full confidence
in the ability of the Yanks.
We seriously think yon have not been
folly as yet. We think
another dose of Yankee pills will have
a good effect on you. You must, we
think, boa supporter ot A. Johnson,
Esq. So are we (with hemp). Now,
Me., don’t attempt after this to insult a
Yank. It can't ot done.
We shall certainly look for an order
of one or two dozen machines from you
in a short time. Send us greenbacks,
as Confed. scrip don’t pass up here only
at 100 per cent, discount.
Yours, truly,
Face Bros.

A “Greenhorn” in a Little Game
of Bluff.—A few evenings ago several
gentlemen met in a favorite refreshment
saloon of this city, and while disconrsing
on the topics of the day, gradually fell
upon the subject of a quiet little game
of bluff. At this juncture a couple of'
gentlemanly looking pessouages walked
v in and with a suavity remarkable for
strangers ingratiated themselves with the
party. The greenest looking fellow of the
two whs introduced by his companion as
an agricnltural gentleman residing in the
County of Bertie, Ifqrt|l Carolina. This
was of itself of sufficient introduction to
all Petersburg, and to thispleasent cotery
it was fine, So they all topk a quiet game
of bluff together and then the dreary hour
of midnight came one of our Petersburg
citizens had lost his watch, another his
purse of eighty dollars, and another his
small potato pile of twenty-five. The
disinterested associate of the gentleman
from Bertie lost also his gold watch and
all of his money, about one hundred
dollars. Tbe agriculturalist from Bertie
pocketed all wkh an expression of ver
dancy and satisfaction, that must have
amassed if it did not soothe the losers.
The game being ended by the breaking
of every body but. the greenhorn, aJI
went to bed and tbe next morning it was
discovered that the said greenhorn agri
culturalist, citizen, of Bcirtie, N. C., was
no other than Richmond one of the most
celerbrated gamblers of, the city;—Pe

Breckinridge at Baton Rocge,—
Tbe Baton Rouge (La.) Advocate of
the Bth contains an anejedote of Gen
eral Breckinridge which we have never'
before heard t .
When General Breckinridge was
marching on Baton he one day,
uuatteqded by his aids, rode up to a
solitary pine-woods videtfc, who had just
come iu from St. Tain pinny and was
new to the etiquette of army life. The
General had not the pass word, and the
vidette had no advantage of him ip
that respect. , i
“ I wish to pass,” said the General.
“ Well, dod durn you,; pass on,' who
care* a cast;; 1 ain’t stoppiu’ this here
road, are I 7”
“ You dou’t know who I afo,” B*l4
the General, smiling,
J “ No, I don't ;* that’s a pooty boss you
are on, anyhow."
I am General Breckinridge, the
. confounding officer,” continued the
General, much amuaed at the picket’s
idea of the duty required of him.
“You ar, or lot Bob
Chiggcrr, an I am glad tUIBB'YOOT'Otir
feller, how are you'V" replied ihe.pteket,
exteudiug a hand ** large -as a frying-,

The General shook hands and gal

quiries about the health of Mrs. Breck
inridge and the family.
