any alarming extent.
—The Spanish journals recommenu
the establishment of the inquisition in
Spain as the sole means of a living
society.
A man was asked what induced
him to make a law student of his son.
“Oh, he wa- always a lying little cuss,
and 1 thought I’d humor his leading
propensity.”
—*‘l can’t hear children," said Mrs.
Pritn, disdainfully. Mrs. Partington,
looking over her spectacles, mildly
replied: ‘‘Perhaps it you could, you
would like them better.”
—ls you arc disquieted with anything,
you should consider with yourself—is
the thing of that worth, that for it I
should so disturb myself and lose mv
peace and tranquility?
—Bombay and Calcutta, on opposite
sides of the peninsula ot Hindoostan,
am connected by a railway one thousand
miles long, and which is traversed by
trains in four days.
—Humility must be a very glorious
thing, since Pride put it on. Pride
must be something deformed, since it
dares not show itself naked, and is forced
to appear in a mask.
—lt is said that all anybody need do
in New Haven, to get a first class
biography, is to make a donation to the
Orphan Asylum, or subscribe to the
stock of the Derby Railroad.
—Why is a lawyer the most ill-used
man in our social system ? Because,
though he may drive his own carriage,
he must draw the conveyances of other
people.
—While under the influence of de
lirium tremens, a man in New York
State wandered stark naked for two
days in the woods, and died from ex
posure.
—Why are young ladies kissing each
o her like an emblem of Christianity ?
Because they are doing unto each other
as they would that men should do unto
them.
—One firing a lodging said to th*
landlady, “I assure you, madam, I am
so much liked that I never left a lodging
but my landlady shed tears.” “Perhaps,”
said she, “you always went away with
ut paying.”
—A little girl, four years old, was
recently called in a police court, and, in
answer to the question as to what
became of little girls who told false
hoods, she innocently replied that they
were “sent to bed.”
—Alexander Dumas the elder, re
turning from a day’s sport at the coun
try seat of a friend, with a perfectly
empty game bag, was asked : “Well,
Dumas, what have you killed ?” “Time,”
was the quiet reply.
—A great saving in the material and
time expended in packing bottles of
wine has been made in France by the
use of india rubber rings. These are
placed round the bottles, which are
thus kept apart and can be packed
tight.
—The medical students of Cincinnati
were somewhat excited the other day by
a search of all the colleges, at the
instancy of a widow whose husband s
body had disappeared from the ceme

not the right one.
—The flirtations and pleasant tete-a
teles between the clerks of the New
York postoffice and the young women
who call for answers to matrimonial
advertisements are complained of as
nuisances.
—A lady asked a pnpil at a public
school, “What was the sin of the Phari

replied the child. She had read that
the Pharisees “strained at gnats and
swallowed camels."
—Gne of the women speakers at the
Equal Rights meeting in New Yorki
was so pretty that the public seemed
inclined to give her any right she chose
to ask. Some of the more antiquated
ladies styled her “a forward minx,”
though she blushed charmingly while
speaking.
—Mrs. David Kitchen, of Morgan
county, Indiuna, gave birth to three
children —a boy and two girls—a short
time since. Iler husband was a
member of the 33d Indiana, and was
discharged for “disability.” “Who’s
bin here since I’se bin gone ?”
—The Tennessee Legislature must be
a terrible affair. A Radical paper says
“it has the eye of an eagle, the heart of
a lion, and a strong right arm. whoso
vigorous blows will shatter the last,
refuge of Tennessee treuson to impalpa
ble dust.” Nobody but Sam Mercer
could have said tha^.
—The Madison Argus told a newly
married editorial friend that lie would
