LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION
Saturday morning jan. 6, is« 7
A CHARMINQ POEM.
Oar local frieud of tins Atlanta New
Ei'O, Mr. A. R. Watson, is not only a
good local, hut is “some’' on the poetry.
Wa have a great fancy for Hootch
poetry, and affect Scott and Burns
hugely. The following from Scott's
Monthly for January, is from Mr. Wat
son)* pen and is a gem of poesy, ami a
pretty tribute to favorite Bobby Burns :
‘ THE AULD CLAY BIGGIN.”*
BY A. K. WATSON.
What ga<)e is now the birdie's nest,
Sin' he who sang hae gone to rest
Wi' flowers blooming owre his breast,
San fresh an’ fairlie—
Blithe blue-bells—Scotia’s very boat—
t Smiling so sairiie f
Nae blither bard had Scotia’s isle,
His sang, made a’ her lawlans smile,
While thro’ her highlands many a mile
An echo Hingin'
That made each heart foel glad the while
Rare Hob was stagin'.
An’ he. wha had sma’ praise aboon
The soil he trod wi' peasant shoon,
Hae set the very narld atuno
Wi’ his sweet singin’,
And in the voice o’ “Bonnio Doon”
It aye is ringin’.
Bast lovers lo’ed his eannie sang,
While bloth'rin wits a’ feared his stang,
An’ lairdies dodged the bolt he Hang
Wi' wicked aimin’,
An’ cowrin critics found ere lang
Him wee! worth namin’.
He thoct nae man beneath his ken,
An’ stood heid-bigh wi’ noblomen;
His manlie nock ho wadna ben’
To a’ the Peerage;
Ho had thro’ ilka rank an’ kin
A safe, sure steerage.
He was a man, an’ mair than that
Naelairdio was ; he loathed and spat
On rank like ony Democrat
Wi’ goodlie hatin’.
Nor elovated fortune’s brat
Wi’ over-ratin’.
He had nae voice for flattery;
The gowd in man aye pleased his eo;
For siller in the pocket he
Ne’er cared a jingle;
Nor swapped for purse-proud pageantry
The pair man’s ingle.
He spracbled up the hill o’ fame
Hap-shackled by nae patron name
For Scotland was his ainlie aim
An’ high ambition ;
lie slang a glory roun’ the shame
0’ her condition.
Pin’ he wha sang o’ Scotland’s woe
Is lyin’ where the blue bells blow,
What mind we how bis house should go
Wi’ 'ts hamely riggin’?
What tho’ decay should crumble low
The auld clay biggin ?
* Burns’ cottage is advertised for sale in
a late English paper.
Big Bear Story—Oi.d ’‘Put” Out
done. —The Elmira (N. Y.) Advertiser
says: “The other day a party of four
hunters went out sporting from Crescent,
a station on the Northern Central,
between here and Williamsport. After
reaching the mountain they decided to.
separate in search of game, the dis
charge of a gun being the rallying
signal should one need the assistance of
the rest. One of the four, William
Godcharles, in his perigrinations, came
across the opening of what seemed a
den, amid some rocks. He boldly en
tered, and about the same time was
rather rudely thrust back and out by an
enormous black bear, which resented
intrusion by at once showing fight.
Having his gun loaded nnd pointed in
front, he at once discharged its con
tents, which took effect in the head of
the hear and killed it instantly, fortu
nately for his future comfort and safety,
about which he began to have serious
doubts.
“The noise of the firing brought his
companions quickly to the spot. They
at once went to work and skinned and
dressed the animal, and started home
with what meat they could carry. When
well ou their way they bethought them
selves that likely the den might be a
wintering place for bears, and possibly
there were more to he found. So they
trudged back and put their guns in
order, and entered, nnd succeeded in
Btampeding three more bears, which
showed good pluck, but at length were
compelled to yield to the superior
prowess of the hunters. They secured
the trophies of their day’s sport, and
proceeded home without further hin
drance, and showed the evidences of
the hot work they had encountered with
the four black bears.”
Abot.ish the Courts.—The Spring
field Repuulican says: The New York
Herald unites with the Washington
Chronicle in calling upon Congress to
reconstruct the Supreme Court, so as to
secure more lree-and-easy inte-pretations
of the Constitution. To this the Spring
field Republican pointedly says: “Co
lonel Forney should ask Thad. Stevens
to introduce a joint resolution dispensing
with the Supreme Court altogether.
Nothing is easier, and then there will
be no trouble from this obstinate old
constitution, which is always getting in
the way of “progress.’ ”
Newspapers in New Exgland.—

land States three hundred and twenty
six newspapers and periodicals, of

Vermont, sixteen in Rhode Island, und

can, and thirty nine Democratic.
—A Homan paper says of the French
Emperor, “Napoleon the third has fallen
hack; he is lost. He has retreated
from Poland from fear of Russia; he
lias retrenled from Germany from tear
of the needle-gun; he Ims retreated
from Mexico from fenr of the United
States; he has retreated trom Rome
from fear of Orsini and Mazzini.’’ j
