MORNING NEWS.
|3jP* Mr. Walsh in a late leter from Paris
says—Your Southern planters will be awake to
the resolutions of the general meeting, on the
17 th instant,of the Manchester Chamber °f Gom-
moi'ce, “to devise, a cotirse to obtain an in
creased'Supply of cotton fronrltidia and the
comments of the Lotion Times of the 19th
cn those resolutions carry no little weight and
instruction. It was decided that the “depen
dence of. the, great industry of the district on
n single source for tire supply’of its raw mate
rial culls for serious consideration.” One of
my motivos. fop adverting to this mailer .is, to
cite a most significant and incisive retort of the
Paris La Presse of the 21st instant:'
“The Manchester Corporation, the organ of
the great cotton lords,” observes that Journal,
‘•was strongly excited by the re-opening of the
tariff question at Washington.’ This was na
tural. If America aJSwsJd eontriva to spin and
weave for herself altogether, the Babylon of
calico must fall into decay. But nd direct op
position to the Presidential and Ministerial
project could bo attempted. What, then, is
the course of the Manchester Chamber of Com
merce ? They turn to account for themselves
the very reasoning which they condemnjri Mr.
Meredith’s report. He argues |hal the producers
of the raw material should make the most at
home, in promotion of American labor, wealth,
and convenience, of the peculiar gift from
Providence. Why depend upon England for
textile fabrics, with the previous plant in Ame
rican hands? In that country the epithets
absurd, impolilic, and 60-forth, have been lav
ished upon the American Secretary's logic; yet
attend to the same principle in what thcJManches
ter Chamber ask of their Government. They
urge the advantage of growing enough of cot
ton in their colonies, in order that the double
profit and a safe independence may besecured.
But this .clashes with the doctrines of their po
litical economists-—the" oracles of Manchester!
If the demonstration of the Chamber was de
signed as a threat to tho United States, it tnust
fail; because the Americans know perfectly
well that if England has remained dopepdant
on. them for the supply of cotton, it has pot been
for want of the wish to escape ; and that no
serious competition with their planters can ever
result from the efforts to produce the material
in the British East India possesiessions.”
f I have thus condensed the paragraphs of
Li Presse.']
armed, under the expectation of a catastrophe
and some I am pained to say, who are ready, if
not anxious, to draw the dagger and revolver.
This is no fancy sketch.”

THE LAND AS I SAW IT.-
A character, condition and prospects 0
A Really Distressing Case.—A day or two
since tin accomplished young lady of this city,
vlio was admired by a wide spread circle of
friends,' died from the rupture ot’a blood ve.ssel,
induced by circumstances almost indescribably
painful. It appears that a young gentleman
(a widower) had been paying his addresses to
her Cor several months, and finally the day was
set apart when the nuptial ceremony was to
take place. It appears, however, that the
widower had promised his first wife, on her
death beil that he never would got married a-
gttin; but when time had soothed his feelings
consequent upon so painful an affliction as her
death, he forgot his vow, fell in love with the
yung ladv, and wont so far as to agree upon a
l final engngomenl with her. On reflection the
|g| sleuth of his wife and the sacred vow he made,
\ flashed on his memory. Accordingly, with feei-
| ^ n g s best kbown to himself, he wrote a letter
■ setting forth the facts, and expressed his deter,
rtiiimlion not to comply with the engagement
which he made with the young lady in question.
She received the missive, carefully perused it,
read it over and over again; horror chilled her
frame; she suddenly became raving crazy, and
after living a maniac for only three hours Troin
the receipt of t he letter, she burst a main blood
vessel; and fell a corpse. Thus perished a fine,
talented and accomplished young Indy of Phil
adelphia one wl}o was beloved by all wboknew
her.—Phil. Sun. ■ * ’

Experience proven both the practicnbility and
usefulness of the penny Press. Within the few years
past all the Northern and Eastern cities, as well us
most of thope South aud West of ns, have been sitp-
plied with papers of this description, whose small di
mensions enable tbeir publishers to issue them at a
price so low as to place them within the re&eh of all,
and thus to make them die best mediums for the, gen
eral diffusion of information on all subjects bearing
upon theiptcrests of community. By cheapening the
Press, all have been participants in its benefits, while
tbe jiuBliehani and dotiductora, by a greatly increased
patronage, have been made amply remunerated ior their
expenditure of capital and labor.
• Believing that tlie growing prosperity of Bnvannah
authorizes, and that her interests demand the estab
lishment of a cheap commercial and news medium,
we have determined to publish the Daily Morning
News as nearly as possible upon the plan of the penny
Press of the Northern cities.
The Morning News will be emphatically n Com*
mercial Newspaper, devoted to t'he diffusion of useful
information on all subjects of popular interest, and to
tbe advancement of City avid. State interests, gener
ally ; preserving at all times a strictly neutral and
independent position in regard to Politics aud Parties.
Arrangements have been made for giving the paper all
the facilities enjoyed hy the hest Daily Papers, tggid
no pains willbe spared to mak© it satisfactory in all its
departments, and to give it the character of a res
pectable*, useful, and reliable Journal.
In view of.fehe great advantages which must result
to theoitffc'ensand business man from the establishment
of such a paper in Savannah, we feel that we may ask
and safely count upon a liberal support.
Terms.—Daily Morning News will be ieriied
and served to subscribers at $4, per anrinm, payable
