Jenny Lind and Baunum.—The New York
Commercial pronounces as fudge the extrava
gant statements ns to Barnum having contract
ed with Jenny Lind for coming to America,
and says :
“The specific terms of the engagement are
those. Mr. Barnum will bear all expenses
and risks, and Miss Lind will receive one
thousand dollars a night for singing* The mus
ical director is to receive £5,000 for the whole
time, and the male vocalist £2,500. So we
learn from the Albion, the editor of which pa
per says thut ho has seen the contract.” *
The editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, on
Monday, conversed with the gentleman who
recently effected the engagement, fofMr. Bar
num, with Jenny Lind, and gives the following
description of her, &c:
He met Miss Lind at Lubec, where she was
residing with a lady companion. Jenny is a-
hout twenty-nine years of age. She is a native
of Stockholm, and the only child of poor parents,
both of whom aro alive, and living in ease and
indepaniMhce in Switzerland. She is about five
feet six inches high, of fair complexion, light
bair, fine figure, not beautiful, but very inter
esting, Her demeanor and manners are natu
ral and graceful, end tree from affectation. She
lias already accumulated a large fortune. Her
vocal powers were fully devoloped about
twelve years ago, but she was the pride pf
Stockholm, even as a child. She made her
first appearance at Befilm, as Agatha, in Der
Freischutz, was eminently successful, and from
thnttime her career has been most brilliant.
She will leave for the United States in S ptem
ber next, and will sing one hundred and fifty
nights in this country and at Havana. Her first
concert in the United States will be given in
New York. Her private secretary is now in
Philadelphia, on business connected with her
engagement.
E3T An Earthquake in Wisconsin, at two
Rivers, on the 3d inst. in the evening, was ac
companied by several reports.resembling distant
cannonading. The shook caused a large fis
sure in the ground, ah inch or more wide, as
well as several smaller ones. The wentherat
the time was very cold, the lake hovered with
drifting ice, and the mercury at 12 degrees
below zero.
Treasure Seeking,~-A Mr. Griffin has pre
sented a petition to the Common Council of
Boston, asking leave to dig in the common, or
bore, or excavate, in Bcarchof a rich treasure
which, he says, was hurried there by his grand
father, prior to the Revolution i andoftho exis
tence of which he hasrecently become satisfied
by sufficient evidence. The application was
referied to a committee.
A locomotive is now in course of con
struction at Cambridge, Mass, which is wurrant-
ed to draw a passenger tram at the rate of fifty
miles an hour.
A horrible murder and suicide were commit
ted in Paris recently. A lieutenant of the 56th
Regiment of the Line, lodging in the Rue
du Havre, killed his mistress with his sword
and then threw himself from his window into
the streets. He was killed on the spot.
The Philadelphia Tailoresses have made a
touching and weighty appeal to the humane,
for aid to enable thorn to open ashop and dis
pose of their own work, so as to secure a fair
compensation for their labor. The following
list of prices, ef. present paid by the employers,
will convince all that the poor women cannot
support themselves at such rates, without ruin
ing their constitutions by incessant labor,
both day and night:
Men’s thick heavy eafinat coats, each 37j- to 76 cts,
Heavy blanket coats, X. 50 •* 62f
Course flushing <lo 371 “ 50
Linen sack,.-..do 125“ 40
Plants, extra full-trimmed, double
milled cassimere 37J “ 50
Punts, summer 10 “15
Do. satinet, full trimmed 15 “25
Vests, all kinds.... 15 “ 50
Shirts and drawers, (fluunuei) 8 “ 121
Do. linen and fnualin 16 “ 50
Is not such a tariff, of prices for the labor of
American females a disgrace to the country that
enforces it 7 Life sustained by such labor is
indeed scarce worth preserving. How many
of the slaves of. Georgia would survive a
twelve-month if ihey were compelled thus to
earn their bread 7
Sub-Marine 2'clcgraph.—The, Paris Presse
dt.votes more than two columns to the details
connected with the project ofa sub-marine elec
tric telegraph between Franco and England,
for which Mr. Brett has obtained a privilege of
10 years from the French Government. It
appears from this account that the contract
binds Mr. Brott to have his telegraph com
pleted by the 1st of September ne$t; but the
French Government reserves to itself the right
of stopping the works before the 1st of Sep
tember, in the event of circumstances occur
ring to render this measure indiopen able. A
joint stock company, under the name of Brett.
Toche & Co., the seat of which is to be Paris,
has been formed with a capital of 750,000f.,
but Mr. Brett undertakes to complete the
telegraph across the Chapnelfor459,000f. The
two points fixed upon are Cape Grisncz, near
Calais, and the sbakspear Cliff, near Dover.
Thu distance between these points is only 18
miles English, but the line of telegraph, con
sisting of seven wires properly covered, is to
be 23 miles, to allow of oscillation.
■BP Thu N. Y. Albion, alluding to the mel
ancholy reproductions of the old genteel com
edies, says: ‘'The public demand modern com
edies, that shall reflect the manners of our own
period, and the American public, particularly,
are becoming alive to the necessity of produc
ing pieces that shall illustrate the peculiarities
of American character. It should be the poli
cy of managers to offer terms to authors of tal
ent, sufficiently liberal to insure the co-opera
tion of men of genius.”
BP A little boy who has had many lively
dreams, said to his mother the other mottling
—“Mu, is there no way that people can find
out to keepvthe things, when they wake, that
they dream they have when they are asleep?”
Killed by a Woman.—A man named James
F. Kelly whs shot at Cincinnati by a woman
named Weickmeir, whose house he had forcibly
0 ntered and threatened her life.
Rich and Poor. — “I have never known,”
say* Dr. Chnndler, speaking of a not uncom
mon form of insanity in his Massachusets State
Lunanatic Hospital Report, “a patient brought
to a hospital, who had fears of coming to want,
but was considered by his neighbors as a man
: el wealth. I apprehended that the fear of pov-
j « rl y ” ut seldom brings insanity to the poor.”
Costly Steamboat Accident.—rOn Satur-

passengers from New York for Philadelphia,

PROSPECTUS OF THE
DAILY MORNING NEWS,
An Independent Commercial and News Paper, to be
Published in the City of Savannah.
BY JOHN M COPPER,
EDITED BY YV. T. THOMPSON,
Author of “ Major Jones’ Courtship“Chronicles of
Pincville” “ Sketches of TravelSfc- 6fC.
Experience has proven both tho practicability and
usefulness of the penny Press. Within the few years
past all the Northern and Eastern cities, as well as
most of those South and YVei.t of us, have heen sup
plied with papers of this description, whose small di
mensions enable their publishers to issue them at a
price bo low as to place them within the reach ut all,
and thus to make them the best mediums for the gen
eral diffusion of information on all Bubjects bearing*
upon 4be interests of community. By cheapening the
Press, all have been participants iu its benefits, while
the publishers and conductor*!, by a greUtly increased
patronage, have been made amply remunerated lor their
expenditure of capital and labor.
Believing that the growing prosperity of Savannah
authorises, and that her interests demand the estab
lishment of a cheep commercial and news medium,
we have determined to publish the Daily Morning
Neva ns nearly as possible upon the plan of the penny
Press of the Northern cities.
The Morning News will be emphatically a Com
mercial Newspaper, dnvoted to the diffusion of useful
information on all subjects of popular interest, and to
the advancement of City and State interests, gener
ally ; preserving at all times u strictly neutral and
independent position inregardto Politics and^gPurties.
Arrapgemeuts have been made forgiving the^pfper all
the facilities enjoyed by the best Daily Papers, and
no pains will be spared to make it satisfactory in all its
departments, and to give it the character of a res
pectable, useful, and reliable Journal.
In view of the great advantages which must result
to the citizens and business man from the establishment
of such a paper in Savannah, we feel that we may aak
and safely count upon a liberal support.
Terms.—The Daily Morning News will be issued
and served to subscribers at $4, per annnm, payable
half yearly, in advance ; er, 10 Cents per week, pay
able to the Carriers.
