An empty pocket’s the worst of crimes !
If a man is down, give him a thrust—

Whose hopes are built on u maiden’s truth,
But the maiden will break her vows with ease,

A soul well trained in villainy’s school—

where there are living beings, should be well
supplied with fresh air. Yet in this nineteenth
century* in this enlightened lund, and in the
great city of New York—tho more than Lon
don of the New World—the laws of ventila
tion seem to be less understood by many than
by the wild Indian that roams with bow and
spear on our Western wilds.
It is well known that one individual, consti
tutionally ns well as by the nature of his occu
pation, requires more atmospheric air than
another. Those who labor hard require more
than those engaged in sedentary occupations.
Those employers who neglect good ventilation,
are ignorant of that philosophy which leads to
the greatest amount of product. During our
winter seasons, it would greatly promote the
health of our women folks, if they depended
more for heat on warm clothes and exercise
than close apartments and red hot stoves. We
commend this subject to their attention, with
the positive assuranco (if they obey its teach
ings) of a perfect preventive for many head
aches and other maladies—of mind as well as
body.

Respiration—Ventilation,
[From the scientific American,]
Having boon unfortunate enough, a short
time ugo, to pxperienco the most disagreeuble
sensation, in a densely crowded, ill-ventilated
room, we think a few practical remarks on the
subject will not bo out of pluco at this time, as
wo perceive that, for all we and others have
said and written, it lias been, to some people,
like “water spilt upon tho flinty rock.”
It cannot now bo denied, that the heat of the
human body is kept up by a process of slow
combustion, like that of fire in our stoves :—
tho body is supplied with carbon in the shape of
ibod, and the slow combustion of it producing
heat, consists in its combination with oxygen,
supplied by respiration. The heat of the hu
man body by a law of the great Creator, is the
same in all countries, viz: 99 degrees ; und
whether man be a dweller on the snow-capped
cliffs of the Andes, or basks under the red bra
zen sky of the tropics, the heat of his body, if
tested by a thermometer, is the same to a de
gree. The combustion of carbon, then, being
the means of animal hent, every man requires
a supply of oxygon for the iungs, in proportion
to the carbon (fat) consumed in food. In
warm countries less carbon is required, because
internal combustion need not be so rapid.
This is the reason why vegetable and loan food
is most healthy in warm climates, and why the
people at the Northern and Southern poles, can
devour, without hurt tallow and oi). In tho
combustion of our food, or act of respiration,
our lungs absorb oxygen and give out carbonic
acid gas, and water. It is therefore positively
necessary to inhale pure oxygen, ami drive a-
tvuy the carbonic acid as fast as possible, out
■ofitbe room in which people are assembled
for any purpose—-either in public or private
■dwellings. ' '
Each grown up person takes about twenty
respirations in one minute, or 28,800 in twen
ty-four hours. Sir Humphrey Davy estimated
'the emission of carbonic acid gas from the
lungs every minute to be about 264 cubic inch-
’es. Wo can therefore, very easily judge how
soon the atmosphere of a crowded room be
comes vitiated; and this accounts for the faint-
mgs and sick headaches, so common to many
people in such cases. When the same air is
•retithed oyer and over again, about ten
times, respiration becomes oppressive, and
insensibility takes place. Such air, when sub-
nutted to chemical tests, is found to contain
J parts of nitrogen, 10 of carbonic acid, 4 of
"jygen, and 7 of a peculiar oxyde of carbon.
ow necessary, then, to health, is a good and
plentiful supply of fresh air for ventilation. In
crowded meetings, where the apartment is illy
'entilated, no person can find enjoyment, for
the lungs soon become oppressed, and the un-
ox . v genized blood knocks with.,terrific blows
upon the brain, as a warning of danger. Car-
>umc acid - gas produces suffocation, hence
t e oppression on the chest, and pressure on the
fain, m dose apartments. Nitrogen gas is also
occasion of death, by producing deleterious
’ octr, upon the blood. Surely, then, it is
essentially necessary that every house and hall,

Experience has proven both the practicability and
usefulness of the penny Press. Within the fbw years
past ali.the Northern and Eastern cities, as wetl as
most of those South and West of us, have been sup
plied with papers of this description, whose small di
mensions enable their publishers to issue them at a
price soiow as to place tbom within the reaeh of all,
an^< thus to make thorn the bestmediums for the gen
eral diffusion of information on (all subjects bearing
upon the interests of comlpunity. By cheapening tbe
Press, all have been participants in its benefits, while
the publishers and conductors, by a greatly increased
patronage, have been made ainpljrromunerated for their
expenditure of capital and labor.
Believing that the growing prosperity of Savannah
authorizes, and that her interests demand the estab
lishment of a cheap commercial and news medium,
we have determined to publish'the Daily Morning
News as nearly as possible upon tbe plan of the penny
Press of the Northern cities.
The Morning News will be emphatically a Com-
mcrcial Newspaper, devoted to the diffusion of uapful
information on all subjects of popular interest, and to
the advancement of City and State interests, gener
ally ; preserving at all times a strictly neutral and
independent position in regard to Politics and Parties.
Arrangements have been made for giviuj^iBi^ffTWatr
the facilities enjoyed by the best Daily Papers, and
no pains will be spared to make itsatisfHctory in all its
departments, and to give it the character of a res
pectable, useful, and reliable Journal.
In view of the great advantages which must result
to the citizens and busiuess man from tbe establishment
of such a paper in Savannah, we feel that we may ask
and safoly count upon a liberal support.
Terms.—Tho Daily Morning News will be issued
and served to subscribers at $4, per annnm, payable
half yearly, in advance or, 10 Cents per week, pay
able to tbe Carriers.
