MORNING sINEWS.
Mail Robhcry.—Tho mail from Peoria fto
Springfield, (Illinois) was robbed nlTreniont on
the 13th ultimo, while the driver wus changing
horses. The Rag, after being cut open and
ridecl of its contents, ', was thrown inio a hay
stack, which Was also set on lire. The hay be
ing damp did not burn rapidly, and tho fire was
extinguished*. The intention ot the robber was
to get the St. Lpuis mail, as it wAs known to
contain $0000.
Tim same pnper informs us that a’ eld at
tempt was also made at Dillon to rob she mail.
It says:—
A sheet was suspended across the bridge for
iho purpose of frightening the horses, but not
effecting their object in this, just as the stage
got off the bridge, two men were seen to issue
from their hiding places, one of whom naught
hold of the leader, with a view' of stopping tho
team, but being a spirited animal, and his lo
comotion being increased by the vigorous ap
plication of the driver's whip, tho robber was
knocked down, and theteam went offnt tf|o top
of their speed, followed by tho other rubber
who was pn horseback, but be , was soon dis
tanced by the stage driver. The probability is
that if the robber had approached near enough,
the driver would have been shot.

The descriptions were high-wrought—the
bridal array, the brilliant brossean of the bride
—tho magnificent jewels, and the splendid
dresses direct from Paris,—even the ‘bridal
chumber’ was thrown open to vulgar gaze,
and thenuptiul couch and Parian purity of the
sheets submitted to gross criticism. The pick
mid choice of the ‘Upper Ton’ of the whole
Union were present. The bridal attendants
numbered, many beautiful representatives of
every portion of the Union—the blondes of the
North and the brunets of the South. Every
thing ‘went merry as a marriage bell.’ The

honey-moon had scarcely waned, when a flare-

The following disgraceful sequel to the bril

Louisville papers of the last week :
“ ‘Notice..—'Whereas my wife, Saliio W.

Referring to this matter, tho Cincinnntti Times

“Now, see tho wtcck the demon jealousy

not the result of outward cilfeumstances ; if it

almost too shBcking for belief:
About 2 o’clock on Sunday morning, a par
ly of villains, numbering between thirty and
forty, btoke into the dwelling of a man named
John Rock, 39th stre.et, near the 10th avenue,
and proceeding 1 to his bed room, dragged him
outpf bed, and afterbenting him severely, bound |
him with repps. They then put out the light,
and dragging Mrs. Rock from the bed, violated
Kpr person, having beaten her dreadfully, left
her nearlv dead. They then proceeded to the
room of the niece, Miss Rock, and served her
in the same, manner, and her person is said to
present a frightful spectacle.of brutality. The
girl, who i3 16 years of age, was so dreadfully
injyred that her life is dispni.eii of. Throe
men, named Rehoe, Latnpson and Newman,
■were arrested on Sundny night, on a charge of
being concerned in this infernal outrage.
A Puzzle.—We find the following jn an ex-

Y'ou 0 nO but I 0 rheo—
-O 0 no 0 but O 0 me—
Then let ray 0 thy 0 ho,

We think we can translate tho stanza. Par

'ion sigh far a cypher, hut 1 sigh for thee ;
O! qigh for no cyphca,k\n O ! sighksr me.'
Then let my cypher thy cypher be..
