From Laguayra.—By the barque El Dora-
jo from Laguayra. at Baltimore, a note from
Louis Baker, U. S. Consul, stales that a des
patch lias been received from St. Thomas, sign
ed (Jhurles Delavan, U. S. Commercial Ag nt,
announcing that he has in custody two seamen,
named Thomas Reed and Edwurd Clemons,
charged witli murdering themutoand a pnssen-
ger oil board the brig Lindsay, Riggs, of Nor
folk, and that he is waiting the arrival of testi
mony to fully recognise them before sending
them homo l'oi trial. Cupt. Etchberger, of the
El Dorado, saw two men in Laguayra, and has
no doubt they are the inrac, os he was in St.
Thomus when the brig arrived there, on board
of which the murder was committed, and got
a full description of them.
The Charlestown Poisoning Case.—It ap
pears that Mrs. Rose, lately poisoned at Charles
town, Mass., was engaged to be married to
John Pasqual, who is charged with the crime,
within a month after the death of her husband
—a proceeding which was strongly objected to
by her relatives and friends. It will probably
bo deemed expedient to disinter the body of
Mr. Rose for examination, lie having died on
ly two weeks before with similar symptoms.
Horrible.—The coroner, at Philadelphia, on
lust Wednesduy, held an inquest on the body 'of
a child ,four years old, founu dead in the morn
ing in bed, beside its drunken ond debased
father. Prom wlmt could h° learned, it was
evident that the child l ad been dosed with some
vile intoxicating liquor, and fallen a victim to
the poisonous draught. The verdict of the ju
ry was in accordance with the facts. Tile wife
and two children, it appears, had left the house,
and with a drunken and helpless father, the
poor and unoffending infant was left to breath
j its last, in the midst of poverty, debauchery
und degradation.—Ledger.

|M. Patin, the aerostat, after a series of ruinoifs

calculated to convey through the air as many as

Havana, 7th March, 1850.
SUGAR.—Since the 21st February, the unfavorable
weather checked supplies of Sugar materially, and
prices experienced an advance of 1 rial on our last
quotations. But now tho receipts are becoming
more abundant, which chords better selections to
purchasers. There is a steady general demand, and
we place our quotations as follows :—Whites, 9 a 10
rials ; Yellows, (if a 7} rials; Browns, 51 a 61 rials;
Cucuruclios, 5 a 5} rials.
Shipments of Muscovadoes continue for French
markets, both from hence and the outports. We
quote ordinary to middling, 5 a 5} rials ; good to
prime, 5} a 6 rials. »
The state of the atmosphere is now favorable for
the operations of grinding, although it was materially
retarded by. the interruption recently experienced.
MOLASSES is at2 a 21 rials, in the harbor, some
purchases having been made at the latter figure ; in
the outports the price is supported at 2 rials. Musco
vado Molasses 31 a 3} rials.
COFFEE is very scarce and more quiet. The last
transactions were at $13 a 13} for middling to fair.
IMPORTS.—One curgo of Jerked Beef soid at
8} rials, two cargoes at 8 rials, one at 7} rials, and
part of one brought froin a wrecked vessel at8} rials.
There are none left for disposal. A cargo of Halifax
Fish was placed at 25 rials for good Cod and 20 for
inferior; 22 rials for Hake. Some Boston Hake was
sold at 18 rials. No parcels remain. The supplies of
Lard continue moderate and the article has advanced
the present rates being $10} a 11 for kegs, $11J a 12
for barrels. The stock is equal to 6000 kegs. A car
go ot RiCE|8old at 11 rs, and there are now two left in
first hands, besides 300 bags Valencia. W. P. Lum-
ber is improving in value as arrivals have kept out
for some time. About 220,000 feet were sold at $22
for Frankfort and Eastern, and there are 50,000 feet
Portland on hand. P. P. is nlso firmer, a cargo qf
Wilmington sold at $17} for River, and $22 for Tim
ber , there is one from Georgetown for disposal.
The supplies of Box Shooks are falling off, but deal
ers are averse to come forward and buy, owing to
there being a good many in store, and on account of
tlie uncertainty in regard to further imports. They
are thebetter able to assume this attitude as their press
ing wants were satisfied by the purchases made dur
ing the last two months.—A trifling quantity was sold
since our last report at 61 rials cash and on 60 days.
There is some enquiry for good Molasses Hhd.
Shooks, but Muscovado Shooks are in limited re
quest. There is also more demand for Empty Casks,
which are higher, ns well as Hoops, which are very
scarce. Oil has advanced. Candles are support
ed in value, Sperm being in small supply. There
have been no transactions in Flour.
FREIGHTS.—The last charters to Europe were at
£3 for Cowes and u Market, and a Russian ship of
24,000 boxes at £2 12-6 for Cowes and a Market, in
cluding the Baltic ; £3.5 for Rum to Bremen; $3 per
box to Marseilles and Genoa. We quote coastwise
Freights $1 per box of Sugar, $1} tor Molasses to
Northern ports, and $1 to Southern ports.
EXCHANGE on London 10} a 11 p g pem.; Bills

took place at par and below.

town, of good quality, but indifferent assortment, lias
just been sold at $25, which is-an advance.

NEW YORK, Mnrch 7.—There continues an active
demand for money, which, though the supply is am
ple enough for ull the wants of the market, yet sus
tains rates. TUostou and Providence continue to muke
large daily applications for accommodation, and the
holders of cotton required large assistance to enable
them to sustain that market. The amount of com
mercial paper offered, is freely taken, at the current
rates ; at 6 per cent for short prime paper, and we
hear of no transactions under that rate ; and 7 per
cent for paper over 60 days and 8 per cent over 6
months. Names not well knpwn are taken at 9 per
cent.
Loans on call rule at 5 per cent, on the securities
of government, und nt 6 per cent on other descrip
tions.—Groceries’ paper is included in the above, as
there is no distinction in the rates, other than of
prime, second and third rate bills, ranking according
to the "general credit of tha, parties.
Land wurrauts have improved and now command
$128 to 130, for the ICO ucre warrants. The land re
form feeling has calmed.
Teas—The auction sale of Teas liy the Tartar,
which took place yesterday, was the first public sales
of new crop Teas this season. The prices realised
were at. an advance of 15 per cent, on the fall sales.
A portion of the quantity ottered wus withdrawn ut
the sales, of ‘which the blacks were subsequently
sold at the sale prices.
The Grocers field their adjourned meeting yester
day afternoon, to hear tlie report of the committee ap
pointed to consult with tlie importers of rice, on the
subject of rendering the customary tare of twelve

GRAND EXHIBITION !
THE long looked for painting of DANIEL In the
1 LION'S DEN, covering a space of 240 Bqunre
feet, has just arrived, and will commence exhibition
on Tuesday, tho 12th inst, at the ARMORY HALL.
The subject of this painting is taken from the 6th
chapter of Daniel, and the 22nd verse; “ My God hath
sent his angels, and shut the lion’s mouths." The
guardian Angel is represented in the picture as hav
ing just descended to the earth—ho is spreading his
wings over Daniel as a defensive shield, to cover the
head of the kneeling saint, enfolding him as in a man.
tie of soft and celestial plumage. At the sight of tho
vision, the lions shrink back with fear, or hushed by
the voice, that stills the raging storm, sinks down into
deep and subdued repose. The Prophet is depicted
in a posture of devotion, with his Countenance beam
ing with love, awe and admiration.
Doors open from 10 A. M. to 9 P. M. Admission
