I've lost my little May at last I
She perished in the spring,
When earliest’flowers began to bud,
And earliest birds to sing :
I laid her in a country grave,
A rural, soft retreat,
A marble tablet o’er her head.
And' violets at her feet
1 would that she were hack again,
In all her childish bloom ;
My joy and hope have followed her—
My heart fa iu her tomb I
I know that she Is gone away,
I.know that she has fled ;
I miss her everywhere, and yet
I cannot make her dead I
I wake the children up at dawn,
And say- a simple'prayer,
And draw them round the morning meal,
But one Is watttingthere I
I see a little chair apart,.
A little pinafore,
And Memory fills the vacancy,
As Time. Will—%everraoro |
1 pit within my room, and write,
The lone and weary hours,
And miss the little maid again
Among the window flowers,
And iniss her with her toys beside
My desk in sljent play ;
And then I turn and look for her,
But she has flown away I
I drop my idle pen and hark,
And catch the faintest sound ;
She must be playing hide-and seek
In shady nooka around :
She'll come and climb my chair again,
And peep my shoulder o'er ;
I hear a stifle laugh—hut no,
She cometh nevermore I
I waited only yesternight,
The evening service read.
And lingering for my idol’s kiaa
Before she went to bed ;
Forgetting she had gone before,
in slumbers soft and sweet,
A monument above her head,
And violets at her feet !

The Arab and his Barb.—It is not always
that the Arab isreitdy to part with his horse,
if a good beast, whatever price mey be offered;
though money among tho degraded people of
Morocco will work miracles. A circumstance
which proved this occurred to mo about four
years ago, when accompanying poor John Da
vidson some few days' journey into the' inte
rior.
As we proceeded between Monedeea and
Rabat, we were joined by a troop of mounted
Arabs, one of whom was riding a mottled
gray, the handsomest barb I ever saw.
Riding up to the man, I entered into conver
sation with him; and having put him in good
humor by praising his steed, I told him I would
frnike him rich if he would sell the the mottled
gray.
“Whet is your price ?" mid the Arab. .
I offered a hundred and fifty mitiakel, about
twenty pounds sterling; a largo sum in the in
terior.
“It is a good price,” Said the Arab, “but
look,” iaid he—and he broughthis horse on the
other side of me—-‘look at this side of him;
you must oiler mpre.”
“Well, come," I said, “you are a poor man
and fond of your horse; we won’t dispute
about the matter; to give me your hand.
What say you? two hundred?"
_ “That is a large price truly,” said the Arab,
his eyes glistening; and I thought the horse
was mine. But my eagerness, I suppose, had been
too apparent; so the Arab thought I might go
still inriher; and shaking the brildle, (iff ho
went at full speed. The mottled gray turned
its tall in tlio air, and vanished to a speck in-
no time. I turned to speak to Davidsori, and the
next moment the Arab was at my side 1 and,
patting the neck of his grey, he said, “Look at
him—see—-not a hair is turned. What will
you give me now ”1
Davidson prompted nie to offer evert four
hundred ducats rather than let the animal
go. Again I began bargaining and offered
three hundred. On this the Arab gave his
hand, and, thanking me, said, “Christian, lean
now, beset of the price you offered ; but it is in
vain that you seek to tempt me, fori would not
sell my horse for all the gold you or any other
man possesses. Having said this he joined his
companions.
Calling .the kaid or chief of our escort, I nak
ed him if he knew the rider of the gray; ad
ding, that I supposed ho must be rich,.as he re
fused so large a sum. The kaid said, “All I
know is, that he is a great fool; for he posses
ses nothing in the world but that horse, which
he bought when a colt, selling bis tent, fiock,
and even his wife to buy it.
