Much curiosity lmviug oxisted in regard to
, 0 movements of Jenny Lind, we publish the
jllowing extract from a statement, apparently
nthorised, in the New York Herald:
Mud’lle Lind visits our groat country, in a
reat measure, from curiosity, and she purposes
; „j„g through all the principal Stutes, »er-
ninuting her tour at Havana, and returning to
Kurope via Mexico, which arrangement will
preclude the possibility of revisiting our cities;
,nd, according to the plun of the tour, which’
wo have seen, she will employ the time allotted
to the 150 concerts, in about 20 cities of the
Union, which gives to New York 12; Boston
8; Philadelphia 6; Baltimore 4; Washington
2 ; and so on to Charleston; and, as one of
Mad’lie Lind’s great inducements to visit Atn-
ricu is to see the Falls of Niagara, the Mau-
uouth Cave of Kentucky, mid other interesting
features of our countrv, concerts will very
possibly be given at Albany, Rochester, Syra
cuse, Buffalo—North ; and Cincinnati mid
Louisville—West; and soon to New Orleans.
Boston, March II.
A letter hns been received hero from the
Captain of a wbaleship, dated Oahu, December
2d. which states thut the crews desert from the
ships at almost every opportunity, for California
Six days since, the captain of the wbaleship Bra!
Jinn, of New Bedford, arrived off the harbor,
nnd the Captain came on shore for tho purpose
of shipping a cooper. During his nhsence, his
ship disappeared, and has not been heard of
since. It is supposed that the crew took the
vessel from the officers and sailed for California
Parties are here purchasing small vessels for
the purpose of going in search ’of Sir John
Franklin
. Tttxas and thk Union.—The Legislature
of Texas, just previous to its adjournment,ytas-
s d an net providing for the election by the peo
ple of four delegates to the Nushviile Conven
tion from each of tho Cungresional Districts,
nod voted down a resolution instructing said
delegates to oppose every act on tho part of
said Convention which might tend to a dissolu
tion of the American Union
13P The Washington correspondent of the
Baltimore Sun inhisTetter of 13th inst.. gays
One of the lesults of the proceedings to-day, is
no indication of a disposition on the part of a
majority of the Senate, to separate the ques
tion of the admission of California from all
other questions—in effect discarding uny gen
eral plan of compromise.
1 doubt whether the debate now going on
w ill lead to uny compromise. It may prevent
one.
Another remarkable indication of the day
is that a majority of tho Senate arjs disposed to
yield their objections to tho reception of nbo-
lition petitions. Some of the Southern Senu
tors, to-day, proposed, in despair, to give up
tliis contest, and let abolition and disunion pe
titiiiiis come in without objection
It looks now as if California, with her per-
sent boundaries, will certainly be udiriited, in
a separate measure, and that nothing else will
be done except possibly to pass the fugitiv
slave act. and give some necessary protection
to New Mexico and Desoret.—The Southern
members may or muv not agree to this.
ManifKsto ok thk California Represen
tatives.—The United States Senators and
Rcpresontatives-elcct, from California, have ad
dressed a long document to Congress, com
municating copies of tho State constitution,
their credentials, and a formal request for ad
mission into the Union. They express tho
astonishment and regret with which they have
‘•leurned tho existence of un organised, re
spectable and talented oposition to the admis
sion of the ucw State,” and enter at length into
a history of the territory, thu organization of u
Stale, the population, and other matters pertain
ing to the subject. Tho address sits'forth
the grounds upon which California rests her ap
plication for admission into the Union. Ac
cording to its statements, California now con
tains 107,000 inhabitants, nearly double the
amount necessary to secure her admission into
the Union. Of these 76,009 uro American
emigrants, tho remainder being Californians
and foreigners. The uddress is manly in tone
and senfiment, and concludes us follows:
Ibis people request admission into the Ame
rican Union as a State. They understand and
estimate the advantages which will accrue to
theiiKlrom such a connection, while they trust
they do not loo highly compute those which
will be conferred upon their bielliren. They
do not present themselves hs suppliants, nor do
they hear themselves with arrogance of pre
sumption. They come as free American oiti-
citizens by treaty, by adoption and by
■ birth—and ask that they may be permitted
to reap' the common benefits, share the common
ills, and promote tho common wslliaro, as one
oi the United States of America!
