—77ie Flower of the Banana.—A friend who
• „t in the Isabel, from Havana, has pre-
n " '".a to us a specimen of the flower of the
?T" tc tr fe—a great curiosity to any one who
has'never had an opportunity of seeing the plant
ir The flower is of a deep purple color,
ZZX the Egg Plant or Guinea Squash, and
Wine not yet unfoldll, is quite a solid layer
“ bl .y B( i leaves, tiering to a pointed apex,
nd presenting as near the uppearnnce of a
all sugar loaf, of some two pounds weight,
! " na „ ,i,in<rto which we can think ef comparing
us n ''j’[ ie three outside leaves are detached
I- 1 the others—at their root may be seen the
little flowers, i" clusters, from which proceed
,hc bunches of rich fruit that hang pendant
from the banana tree in Cuba. Every layer of
) ett vs contains the germ of a bunch, and, form
diis it can well be imagined that the tree,
which is generally from twelve to fifteen feet
|,j„h, must be very productive. When in full
flower, or loaded with the ripe fruit, it must
present a very rich appearance. The flower
L left at our office for inspection, but it is
requested that it should not be handled.—

COMMODOKE PERRT AND CAt. HUNTER.
A Naval Court of Inquiry, composed of Com
modores Morris and 8hubrick, and Comman
der Dupont, has been ordered to assemble at
Anapolis on the 15th of April, to make an in
vestigation into the capture of Alvarado, by
Lieut. Hunter.
The quarrel between Com. Perry and Capt.
Huntor, has attracted considerable attention
and the public will feel an interest in the in
vestigation of the affair which.gave rise to it.
Cant. Hunter, has addressed a pretty tart letter
to Coni. Perry, dated Washington, March
11, wherein language is employed that does
not bespeak much cordiality of feeling between
the two. Capt. Hunter in his letter says to
Com. Perry.
Every one knows that you have never yet
been accused of u noble or generous act, and
no one knows it better than myself. Why did
you come home and undermine the veteran
Connor, and why have you not done justice to
thenobie and daring Tatnall 1 These are ques-
lioas which I surmise you will not answer ; but,
sir, 1 will answer them for you. It was found
ed upon jealousy, and without any nobility of
character, you determined to violate every rule
of honor for the relevation of yourself and fami
ly. In my youth,, when a young and innocent
boy, before the down was upon my cheek, or
h malicious feeling had entered my bosom, did
you attempt to crush me to tlig earth by the
strong arms of power. It appears, however,
flint the innocent boy whom you then tried to
destroy, has since grown to manhood, that the
Costs of forty odd winters now sprinkle his
locks, and ho stands before you erect, your
equal in every thing except that military ran k
behind which you shelter yourself.
Again, after charging Com.. Perry with' ap
plying to an enemy for a certificate against a
brother officer, he adds!
You retreated, sir, from “Tobasco’’ under fire
of the enemy after demanding an unconditional
surrender; and you know perfectly well that
when one of the most gallant officers of our Navy
was killed, (Chas. W. Morris.) it was retreat
ing, with a white flag atyour fore. I have em
ployed no one, sir, to make mo a cartoon'of
'‘Alvarado.” You have been more fortunate
than myself, and I sincerely congratulate you
in having one who has enabled yoq. to place on
the walls of the Navy Department yotir great
and glorious victories. I have no doubt - you
will be handed down to posterity equally illus
trious with your great and noble brother, upon
whose reputation you have lived so long. Re
spectfully, &c. C.G Hunter.

Compound Fluid Ex-tract of Conyza and
Styllingia.
T HIS preparation is a Concentrated Extract, con
taining all trte Active Medical Properties of the
Conyza, (commonly known ns Black Root,) and the
Styllingia, or Queen’s Delight ,
These plants have been long used among our South
ern Negroes, and recently by the Medical Profession,
with the happiest results, in cases of Chronic Rheu
matism, Ulcers of long standing, and Secondary
Syphilis, ft is much superior to any preparation of
Sarsaparilla as an alterative, being more active and
prompt in iu operation on the system. These facts
have induced the subscribers to present to the atten
tion of Physicians a fluid extract prepared strictly ac
cording to Chemical and Parmoceutical science, de
void of all the feculent and inert parts of the roots,
not doubting that it will supersede the unscientific and
crude preparations hitherto used.
Price—$1 per bottle, or six bottles for $5.

ket has beep unusually dull and depressed since the
departure of the last Btcnmer, and in order to effect
sales, holders are compelled to submit to a decline of
