MORNING NEWS.
Corre spondence of the Morning News.
New York,26 March, 1850.
Nothing of a startling character has occurred
in this village since my last—the excitement
occasioned by the Webster trial in Boston, is
still unabated, and beta are freely offered on
the result. The morale of such bets is very
questionable in my mind, but such is the gam
bling propensity of human nature, that even the
chances of life and death become tho subject of
$5uakes—a new hat—perchance, a pair of boots.
They tulk of the effect of capital punishment
on a crowd—why, I have seen two men,
near the gallows, bet money on the time the
poor wretch would be dying. Some of the
French citizens are quite disappointed because
the 24th February, the anniversary of the Re
public, passed off without nnoiher revolution;
and tor my Dwn part, I quite expected it. The
French are queer people, and unless Louis gets
up a fight with some foreign power, they are
bound to have one among themselves before
lung.
The Democracy had a grand Cass bull nt Old
Tammany, last night. There wns a queer
mixture; it wns Democracy in ■ its Sunday
clothes, and the Phantom of Disunion was not
present, 1 have Seen more stylish affairs, and
much piettier and better dressed females.
The Book sale is progressing briskly at Cno-
i.ey & Kkksis’ ; they closed their stationery
sale yesterday, and commenced the disposal of
Appleton’s books, which it is supposed will
amount to $30,000 ! Buyers actually board at
this place—dinner is served at noon, and tea
nt7, P. M., so that lodgings and breakfast are
all strangers require who attend these sales.
One of our active police officers, A. M. C.
Smith, made a nice gold dust speculation late
ly. Some $10,000 worth wns stolen from on
'board the “ Oregon,” on the Pacific side. He
wns applied to—got trace of the thief—follow
ed him up and recovered the treasure. He
yesterday obtained permission of the Mayor to
4,000 as a reward for his sagacity and
trouble. Smith is one of the stool-pigeon offi
cers, and possesses the means, I know not how,
of receiving, of course for a consideration, in
formation of noted characters—their move
ments, suspicious circumstances, &c. Thus,
when any great robbery takes plnce, he gener
ally knows what thieves were in the vicinity
about the time; gets on their track and fre
quently nabs them; so that he has become
very famous as a remarkably efficient officer.
A novel experiment wns attempted yester
day at the Navy Yard, namely: to sink hollow
•cylinders into tho earth, in solid piles, by means
• of the pressure of the atmosphoro. A shaft
‘for a well is to be sunk 32 feet deep, and it was
'expected that the pile would sink in five or six
Tiours. In my next, l will detail the process
and the result.
An extraordinary case of surgery hns just
■ come to light here. A man wns utlacked with
a disease about two years since which the sur
geon pronounced to be cancer in the spine. He
suffered dreadfully, and could obtain no relief,
and hewas considered incuruble. He hascon-
tinuedin the same state ever since; but a few
days since he complained of a strange feeling
a '"'ut his shoulder blade, and a surgeon was
again called in ; on examination he found a
P r( ituburanco there,'and on cutting it discovered
n piece of wood, almost rotten, which he ex-
tr Hcted from the wound, and the man is now
"Madly recovering.
The "Crescent City” arrived yesterday, from
ls Sres, but brought no California news. Tne
Ohio” is expected hourly; but a| she lef
Ohagres only a little later than the other, I
ahe will bring any. The " Crescent
' ty ’ “ Ohio” and “ Philadelphia " are ad-
TBrt!,p d to leave here on Thursday—w she
he quick.
There is u statement in some of the papers,
that tho Senate of Pennsylvania hqs passed the
bill of diVorco asked for by Forrest. It is not
so; they resolved to consider it, and it was ta
ken up by vote, and then referred to the Com
mittee of the Whole, where it is y< t to bo ac-
tod upon. It may not pass that body, and can
not pass the other House, it is said. Those
who have seen the testimony pronounce it ut
terly insufficient to sustain the charge of crim
inality. The persons implicated are George
Jamieson, the actor, N. P. Willis, his brother,
and an Englishman. A letter of the former,
addressed to the lady, was found, in which he
expressed warm admiration for her character
and virtue; and the others have been guilty of
paying Mrs. F. such attentions as are tolera
ted in all fashionable society, and are exucted
from one sex by the other. I am assured that
the evidence does not reflect, in the slightest
degree, on the moral rectitude of tfan lady.
I heard the “ Musicul Prodigy ” last night.
The boy, Sebastian Cook, or as he is now
styled on the cards “Sebastian Emil Kook;”
of course the name must be foreignized or ho
could’nt possibly succeed. He pluys wonder
fully fora boy—has an exquisite touch—rapid
execution, and great taste; His little fingers
ran over the keys of the piano like lightning,
and he grasps rt imndlul of the ivories apparent
ly with as much ease as though his hand was
full grown, and very long fingers at that.
I w.-ts told a startling fact, a few days since,
by the bar-keeper at the Apollo rooms, where
balls are given nearly every night during the
winter. He says, that at one ball given during
the'present season, himself and two assistants
took for drinks at the bar; independent of c-ham
pagne, the enormous sum of $2$0. Dancing
and drinking, therefore; would seem to be
closely allied'; but if it be a healthy exercise,
as the advocates of it say. I don’t think the ac
companiment can be considered sj.
The proprietors of omnibusses should make
a great deal of money, for their expenses are
very heavjf, even in the matter of horses alone.
Kipp & Brown, very large proprietors, state
that they lose from their stables, annually,
from 2300 to 2500 horses, in. the aggregate,
through fatigue, accident and general natural
causes,
Our Board of Aldermen voted themselves $4
a day while in session. They are hereafter to
hold stated sessions, periodically.
