the claim to the judgment of the Secretary of
the Treasury, and on the 28th of lobruury,
1819, tho then Secretary, Mr. Walker, having
hut three days of official life remaining, settled
the claim, a id ordered the principal to be paid.
Since that time there bus been a continued
strueele going on to obtain the interest, a-

Psited States. Within a few days the opinion
that officer lias been filed, affirming the le

sia an order to pay the amount was given, and
understand that money hkjbeen paid.
Hon. G. W. Crawford, present Secretary of
War, was during a part of the time that this
claim wits before Congress, attorney for the
claimants, - and it is alleged that ho was per
sonally interested in that portion of it covered
iy the recent decision. It is said that the
natter was made the subject of consideration
a Cabinet council, and the correctness of tho
Attorney General’s opinion was concurred in
by the Other members.
Some writers for the press, noted for a spir
it of rabid hostility toward the Administration
ami the Cabinet, and more particularly toward
the head of the Home Department, have as
sumed that the claim referred to was not u
just and valid one, and have gone on to attrib
ute improper favoritism to Mr. Ewing for ol-.

thing to do with tho matter, as it does not be
