BOWNI it OO. A Ruse.—The Cincinnati Enquirer relates that on the lust trip of tho Brilliant down |lrom Pittsburg an incident occurred of a most ro mantic character. Two young men got on board at. Wheeling, accompanied by u lady, nil en route fur California. Tho gentlemen entered their nninee on the clerk’s book as John and Wm. Brown, and the lady Miss Pandack. At Marietta, - just as the boat was backing out, after having landed, an officer reached tho shore and demanded to come on board, ns he had re ceived u telegraphic despatch ■ to arrest those persons who answered to the above mimes, al leging as a reason that the Biowns had ab ducted the ludv, or, in other words, had stolen away “an old man’s dsughtcr.” Capt. Grace was about to order the plank run oui agairj when he was accosted by the eldest ofrhe gen tlemen, who begged him not to allow the party to be given up, assuring him thut no wrong . • . ^ . — had been committed, as he lady would avouch. em P ef ^_ “ ne l ^ e common The lady come forward and stated that she left home with her fullest consent, ami that no blame would attach to either of the gentlemen, one of whom she intended to marry as soon as they reached Cincinnati. Capt Grace then ordered the boat to go ahead, for which com mand he received the warmest thanks of the lady, smiling through her tenia. It was, sub- sequently suggested that as the officers might be in waiting for them when they arrived in Cin cinnati, that they had better have the knot tied before reaching there, and as the captain kind- ly consented to stop long enough at Aberdeen— where he knew such things were done without many questions being asked—they jumped at the chance. They stopped, the old justice was called upon, and the little affair was accomplish ed to the satisfaction of the parties, who seem ’ ed to have much lighter heaits afterwards.—N O. Suicide, of a Wealthy Man.—An old and very wealthy citizen of New York, Abraham Lockwood, Esq., committed suicide on Friday ast. by cutting his throat. Perplexities of business, in temporary indisposition, deranged i his mind, creating apprehension of impending poverty. ° A SlaVer, no doubt.—Tho following is from a late London Shipping Gazette : , S’ 1- . Michaels, Feb 24. Trie Vivacious, of Harwich, which arriverf- here a week ago, report* having spoken a suspi cious looking schooner in about lat. 42, Ion: 14. The name on her stern appeared to be “Lutheran Child, of Boston,” but shortly af. ter bailing, she dropped a sail over it. She hod American colors, and stated she was bound for Mu'ta, but did not keep the proper course for that destination ; several men on deck wore Spanish hats.—Sho was painted black below, with dark green bulwarks, and had a gilt figure head. She had been seen by other vessels ar- ived hero. Tho name, probably is fictitious. No such vessel as the “Lutheran Child” belongs to Bos tic;. Horrible Depravity of a Child.—A girl only thirteen years of age, named Ann Ti nker, wn» sent to the house of refuge at. Philadelphia, on Friday, for poisoning the family of Mr. Sam uel H. Explosion of Burning Fluid.—We have continual instances of the danger of the vari ous fluids which are used as substitutes for oil. A gentleman of North Attleoorough writes,, that on tho evening of the 26th ult. a nurse in glass fluid lamps. It had two tubes.4>ut only one wick—the wick belonging to one tube hav ing slipped down in the lamp. It is supposed that the womnn, not noticing this, held the match over the vacant tube. Tne lamp instant ly exploded, scattering the fluid over he^, and! setting the carpet on fire. The Are was fortun ately extinguished, but both hands of the wo man were badly burnt. , iy Nothing is more filthy, or uansaaSitt than to see a tobacc j chewer emptying the contents of his month every five minutes on the Aohr of a car. and many a lady’s dreg* has been ruined by this filthy practice, although it unthinkingly and without ipaliqe, on returning from Jersey City to N" had a splendid specimen of this semi-haii practice, anff that, top, from oner t - 1 - hutward apeearsne# of befog a JerscymrtnF 7 **
