Parisian Women.—A French journalist
gives a m'\ ishing account of the skill of his fair
country--vomen in preserving their charms.
Ho says the belles of twenty years ago are the
belles of to day—to be found in the same boxes
at the opera, in the same attitudes, and with
no other change than that of the toilette.
There is no art in life so successfully studied as
that of preserving youth. They resist time with
a skill and con age worthy of Old Zach at
Buena Vistn. They repair every loss, soldier
every flaw, supply every deficiency, show the
same undiminished rii-glets, blonde or brown;
have the same complexion of lily or rose, the
same snowwhite and well filled shoulders, the
snmeplump arms, the same waist, supple, round
slender and adorable. .Perhaps they do not
permit themselves to decollelcr (undress) with
quite as venturesome an audacity as in other
days, but they still dress with apparent uncon
sciousness of danger and sufficiently low for all
purposes of bewilderment and fascination. Of
the three present stages of beauty in Paris—
the beauties in flower, in fruit und in preserves
—one scarcely knows which is the most tempt
ing*
Well may Paris be called the paradise of
women.
A Visit to tho Pope.—A Roman correspon
dent of the London Daily News writes:
“ The day before yesterday I had the honor
of being presented to Pie Nono, and among the
high officials of his court the impression was
strong that they were to leave directly ufter
Easter. His Holiness, who received us with
great courtesy, looked remarkably well ; after
a few indifferent questions, he said that he
would pray the Lord to shower down every
grace upon us, and especially that grace which
was nearest his heart.’ To two of the party,
who were children, he said, ‘ I will give you
qach a teminiscence of me, so that when you
are grown up you will be able to say you have
seen the pope; ’ and then turning to his es
critoire he took out two medals with his effigies
upon them, and presented them. Whilst wail
ing in the ante-chamber, Cardinal Dupont pass
ed through, having received an audience ; he
was followed by Cardinal Riurio Sforza, Bishop
of Naples. The Sardinian ambassador then
came out, and we were pr sented. The man
ners of the pope were exceedingly simple, and
Ills dress still more so, consisting ofn fine white
flannel dress—on his head he wore a crimson
colored cap large enough to cover the tonsure,
I und his shoes were of crimson or chocolate
colored velvet with the cross embroidered in
gold on each. I must not omit to soy that to
ouch of us who were protestants his holiness
extended his hand to bo kissed. There has
been a report in Naples that between the Aus
trian party arid the pope there had been some
misunderstanding. On the French urging
strongly and perseveringly the return of his ho
liness, the Austrians, it is said, intimated a
strong desire, if not intention, of retaining the
Bolognese, to which the popp, it is added,
would not accedo. Whether there is anything
in this beyond mere rumor, I cunnot say. It is
by very many, understood that the French ann
Austrians are both to retire from the Roman
states, which are to be occupied by a body of
8000 Spaniards. Such a force, however, would
he most inadequate to the maintenance of order,
■as there can be no doubt the feeling of his
beloved children towards the holy father is any
thing but filial and affectionate. From what
’ ever quarter they have come, the most menac
ing letters have from time to time been sent to
' Bio Nono, which, perhaps, working on his fears,
have had no inconsiderable effect on his move
L ments.”
tjf Wartburg.— The population of Morgan
county,in this State, says ".he Knoxville Register
of tho 20th inst., is increasing rapidly from
the immigration of Germans. Wartburg
in that county, is a thriving German colony
and promises although in the mountains,
to become a place of importance. A lnrgo
number of mechanics are now there busily en
gaged. A splendid article of furniture is made
there, equal in elegance to that made anywhere
and we are told ihat Piano Fortes are now be
tng manufactured in Wartburg that are superi
or to any made in the United SlBtes. Some of
them have already been forwarded to New
York for sale.
Volcanic Eruptions.—The following ealeu
lation exhibits thp increasing progression of th'
Vesuvian eruptions. From the year 79 b
the year 1036 of the Christian era, five are reck
oned ; and from 1036 to 1631, there were
Imports, from America.—The new Amer-
rioan built line of packet ship Yorktown, of up
wards of 1200 tons burthen; which hus arriv
ed in tho docks from New York, brought n
verjTextensive cargo of provisions and general
merchandise, consisting of bucon, beef, rice,
pork, cheese, hops, lard, apples, oil-cukes for
cattle, and a variety of other articles. In ad
dition to the interest attaching to nn importn-
tion of nearly 200 bales of American hops on
this occasion, the vessel brought nearly 100
hogheuds, pipes, and other casks of port wine,
consigned to wine houses here, and <o order.—
rates. This importationof wine, the produce of Por
tugal, from the United Suites of America, is
remarkable; and of course was not practica
ble previously to the relaxation of the naviga
tion law's having taken place. Another fea
ture in this cargo is the importation of 110
barrels of flour, 112 barrels of biscuits, 13
tierces of rice, 2 tierces of vinegar, 5 tierces
of oatmeal, and 570 lbs. of tea, which are of
ficially declared to be emigrants’ stores for ex
portation in the sunte ship, and are intended to
be consumed by .the persons who will emigrate
in the vessel to New York, instead of requir
ing the supply of such articles from the bond
ed or other stores in this country.—London

ined by several of the principal manufacturers
om Rouen and Alsace, and they declared that,
judging from the specimen, the American man
ufacturers have made great progress, and that
they may become formidable rivals to them
tlie production of low-pi iced coarse articles,
but that they are greatly inferior in point of
taste in the pattern and durability of tho color.
It appears from returns furnished by the French
Consuls, that there were 517,000 bales of cot
ton or 127,000 bales more spun in the U. States
than in the French mills during the year 1849.
Notwithstanding theudvantuge the North Amer
ican manufacturers possess by growing the raw
material, they complain, (says a British paper,)
that they cannot compete with the European
manufacturer unless the protecting duty of
more than 30 per cent, imposed on foreign
manufacturers be further increased.

TEA CULTIVATION IN THE t. STATES.
H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUTS,
collected ut great expense of money and labor,
in the middle districts of China, from the most cele
brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, 1 am prepared
to fulfil my engagements by accommodating the pub
lic with n phare of the Nuts received. My main ob
ject ia to plant and cultivate ; but ns I jam quite cer
tain tlintl have obtained, after the Ubor of three
years, the beet quality of Tea Nuts, I am disposed to
meet the wishes of the public, and to share them
with others.-—Tea Nuts gathered in the neighborhood
of Canton arc scarcely worth cultivating, on account
of the inferior quality of the Tea. It is obviously the
interest of tlie planter to submit to an increased ex
pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es
tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small.
In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in
fact acting as an agent for the benefit of the public.
Neither the State, the public, or any individual, has
ever extended to me the aid of a single cent.
For convenience and security, the Nuts will be
packed in tin boxes, and forwarded from Greenville,
S. C., by such conveyance and to such address as the
purchaser may direct, to any part of the U. States.
TEA PLANTS—now on their passage from China,
selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman
of large experience in horticultural pursuits, and p r-
haps better acquainted with the character of the Tea
Plant, than any person in Europe or America—will
also be shared with those desirous of obtaining a
small supply.
A specification of the soil best adopted to the growth
of the plant, the mode of planting, cultivating, &c.
&c., will accompany each parcel.
Application should be made (post-paid)'to the sub
scriber. _ ^ _
