MORNING NEWS.
The Report on Land Titles in Cali
fornia, as made in pursuance of instructions
from the Secretary of State and the Secretary
of the interior, by William Carey Jones, Esq.,
occupies nearly two pages of the Washington
Republic. It is characterised throughout with
great ability. Mi. Jones has evidently inves
tigated the subject fully and thoroughly, and
declares that “the grants in California are most
ly perfect titles.’’ He also thinks the state of
land titles in that country will allow the public
lauds to be ascertained, and the private lands
set apart, by judicious measuies, with little
difficulty, and where thore may be reason to
suppose the grant invalid, the Government
may direct a suit to be instituted for its annul
ment.
Retired List in thf. Army.—Mr. Davis,
■>f Mississippi, has renewed in the Sonate, the
old bill originally prepared by Gen. Macomb,
providing for a retired list. Its chief feature
is to provide that when an officer becomes
disabled, he shall leave service with his pay
proper, (without rations, for age, etc.,) and
that the one promoted to his place, shall re
ceive the rations of the rank vacated, and the
pay proper of the grade from which he was
promoted. This is to last for the life of the
retired officer.
English periodicals are discussing the
question of revising the liturgy of the Church.
The Athanasian creed is objected to; a passage
in the ordination of ministers concerning the
forgiveness of sins by the clergy ; a clause in
baptismal service speaking of the baptized
child, as regenerated, and the words “sure and
■ certain hope,” in the burial service.
Fraternal Affection.—A suit for slander
is on trial in Boston, brought by
against his brother who called him a “thief”
and a “perjured villian.” These umicable
epithets were used on the occasion of a quar-
over the distribution of the effects of their
dead papa, who was wealthy and left his pro
mising sons to enjoy all his wealth.
Shooting Whales.—ANew London wha
ler, named Brown, has invented, the Scienti
fic American says, a mode of taking whales
jfJJch promises a great safety in their cap-
s- He fire* tlle hai^oon, with a line at
tached, oat of a gun as accd.' ato ly said,
as a musket ball. The invention is i.’f 1 *’ a ^ le ’
metical deduction, but has been tried by i^ e
hardy Captain, and with great success. He
has also made a valuable improvement on ttio
lance, whereby it can be fired out of the same
gun which is used for the harpoon, and be di
rected like the bolt of a Genoa Bow, to strike
'the monster of the deep in the vital parts.
Diabolical Attempt.—On Tuesday night,
a k e l? eontaining several pounds of gunpow-
lei, was exploded at the door of the residence
uf Mr. Daniel Saunders, in Lawrence, Mass,
ultimately neither the house nor its inmates
"ore injured. Mr. Saunders was recently
the town Treasurer, and this act has been
committed, it is supposed, L»y some .persons
who have been aggrieved by his action rela
tive to breaches of the license law.
A Terrific Tornado swept over Nassau,
and the island of New Providence, the last week
in March, destroying much property and oight
lives. • Grant’s, Delaney's and Bain’s towns
suffered groutly. Two tornadoes rose at sea
about the same timo and united as they ap
proached the island—the diameter of the
dreadful power being estimated nt from 20 to 30
yards. The most solid stone houses were
tumbled into ruing, and destruction marked its
track.
Army and Navy Estimates.—Mr. Baily,
Chairman of Ways and Means of tho House,
hus introduced the regular army and navy ap
propriation bills for the next fiscal year, en
ding June 30 1851. The total amount for army
and nuvy is $15,919,609 07.
SAVANNAH, SATURDAY MORNING, MAY 4, 1850.
Boston, April 27.
The U. S. ship Ohio arrived below last eve- * n ?, 8 '
ning, from San Francisco, Sandwich Islands
and Rio Janeiro. During the past month there
has been no sickness on board.
We learn from Purser Forrest, who came up
in a steamer, that while the Ohio was lying at
Rio, the yellow fever was discovered to have
broken out on board, and that ufter leaving that
port it con tinued to rage for the space of 3
weeks, during which time about 50 persons
were attacked, of whom 16 died—5 officers and
11 of the crew. Tho following is a list of the
officers who fell victims to the disease :—Lieut.
C. M. Armstrong, Henry Eld., jr. Assistant
Surgeon E. J. Bell, midshipman Joseph B.
Miller, Purser Clark, and J. C. Johns.
Another Mammoth Cave.—A Mihvaukie
correspondent of tho Hartford Courant gives
this description of a Western cave:
“Ithas longbeenknown that near Madison,
the capital of our Btate, and 90 miles west of
this place, there was a cavern of considerable
extent; but it has never been extensively ex
plored, until a couple of weeks ago. Then, a
party of five men, headed by Huwel Lumley,
Esq. a member of our late Legislature, and as
Iftm informed a man of veracity, arranged for
a full exploration of the cave; taking with them
rations for a week’s absence, a canoe and other
needful provisions. Mr. L. has just published
in the Madison Argus a letter of three columns,
detailing generally the adventures and disco
veries of the parly. Some facts which he
states are sufficiently startling, wonderful and
even sublime.
“The party were in the cave near five days,
during which they were constantly progressing,
except so much time as was necessary to re
cruit their exhausted energies, and when after
exploring in all directions, they finally emerged
from tho cave, it was by another opening which
they discovered, some miles distant from that
bv which they entired. Mr. L. 9peaks of the
extraordinary vastness of the cavern at different
points ; its great width, and iri one place ho
supposed the height to befull70 feet; his im
pression is, that it extends over much of the
two counties of the Dane and Iowa, and he is
enthusiastic wheri he refers to the novelties,
curiosities, and great mineral wealth which
abound within this mammoth of a caVern.
At one point of their route they traversed
over and among largo masses and blocks which
they supposed to be rock, but which proved, on
examination, to be galena—lead ore of fine
quality; this was spread over a surface of three
miles. The party concluded thero could not
be less than 200,000 tons of it. Fine specimens
of copper ore were discovered, and at one point
eleven pounds of native silver were found.
Crystals were abundant, and calcareous in
crustations, stalactites and stalagmites, oflarge
size, abundant; of the two latter, one or two
immense labyrinths were discovered.—During
man this subterranean journey, the party came to a
very considerable waterfall, the roar of which,
long before they reached it had attracted their
notice. At the foot of this they discovered
a lake of considerable dimensions, and which
in their caroe they partially explored. The
greatest depth they discovered on sounding this
lake, was thirty-seven feet four inches.”
English and, American Diplomatists.—A
leading article in the London English Herald,
recommends a reduction in the salaries of Eng
lish foreign ambassadors, and especially a re
duction in Sir Henry Bulwer’a salary, the min
ister to the U. S.—That gentleman now receives
£4,500 per anum, and £500 for house rent.
The Herald advises the government to knock
off one thousand, arid remarks that £4,000
would be a liberal allowance for an English
jnvov to a “Model Republc.”—The Herald
argues iVt tho American government pays
small salaries, and yet the work of the govern
ment is well done ; and it asks, “Where is the
commercial treaty in which the Americans have
been outwitted?—where is the negotiation in
which they have not ably, intelligently and
usefully maintained their rights? The American
Jeffersons, Adamses, Monroes, Pinckneys, Ran
dolphs, Tickerings, Clays and others held fast
their ground in the past generation against the
most able statesmen and diplomutisls of Eng
land and France.”—Baltimore Sun.
The Religious Anniversaries commenced
ni Now York on Friday last with the meeting
“t tlie American Society for ameliorating th
condition of the-Jews. There are eighteen so-
f ieties on the anniversary list this year, and the
‘feelings will extend to the twenty-second of
May.

The Telegraph in Russia.—The Journal
des Debats states that the Emperor of Russia
intends to put St. Petersburg!) in direct com
munication with Berlin and Vienna, by means
of a lino of electric telegraph which will pass
by Warsaw and Posen, towards the capitals of
Germany It is said that the Russian Govern
ment is already entering into the preliminary
negotiations for the execution of this under
taking. •
Duties Paid by the Cunard Steamers' since
the Navigation Act.—Theamont of duties paid
by the three British (Cunard) steamers that ar
rived at this port during the quarter just clos
ed, was $510,969 25, averaging $203,656 42
e ich. The Navigation Laws came into oper
ation on the 1st of January, 1850, since which
time these steamers have brought over large
quantities of French and other continental
goods. It is safe to say that the value of each
of these cargoes wss in the neighborhood of a
million of dollars— Boston Traveller.

TEA CULTIVATION IN THE U, STATES.
H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUTS,
collected at great expense of money and labor,
in th - middle districts of China, from the most cele
brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, I ain prepared
to fulfil my engagements by accommodating tlie pub
lic with a share of the Nuts received. My main ob
ject is to plunt and cultivate; hut as I am quite cer
tain that I have obtained, after the labor of three
years, the best quality of Ten Nuts, I am disposed to
ment the wishes of tlie public, and to share them
with others.—Tea Nuts gathered in the neighborhood
of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account
of the inferior quality of the Tea. It is obviously the
interest of the planter to submit to an increased ex
pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es
tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small.
In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in
fact acting bb an agent for the benefit of the public.
Neither the State, the public, or any individual, has
ever extended to me the nid of a single cent.
for convenience and security, the Nuts will be
packed in tin boxes, and forwarded from Greenville,
S. C., by such conveyance and to such address as the
purchaser may direct, to any part of the U. States.
TEA PLANTS—now on their passage from China,
selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman
of large experience in horticultural pursuits, and pr-
haps better acquainted with the character of the Tea
Plant, than any person in Europe or America—will
also be shared with those desirous of obtaining a
small supply.
A specification of the soil bestadapted to the growth
of the plant, the mode of planting, cultivating, Ac.
Ac., will accompany each parcel.
Application should be made (post-paid) to the sub
scriber.
