gives the following:
A lady farmer said the meadow moles had an.
noyed them greatly, and destnyed two fine pear
trees. She tried tm experiment for ihcm with
Theirsubteranean passage wnsuncov-
ered und two cow’s horns, with the large ends
from each other, placed in it, so that the moleB
coming either way may enter the horns. Such is
the ' na'ur’ of the ‘criitor’ that it never barks
out of a scrape, persevering ahead till it makes
its way or diea in the attempt. The latter it
does in the present instance.
Anecdote of Washington.—It is related that
when the British soldiers were about to murch

Proposed New Description, of Railway.—
Mi. E. E. Merriill, C. E. of Camberwell, in a
letter to the Railway Times, suggests the con-
stnetioc of a railway between London and
puts all our present practical details of railway
travelling entirely in the shade and evetitho
broad gauge is but a pigmy to h s proposition.
His plan is to construct n sinrlo lino of rui.way
from London to Liverpool with u 20 feet gauge,
without turnings, sidings, or crossings, i xeept
at the two termini, and a passing place in the
c ntre, and no curve to be of less then four
miles radius. The rail* are to be of suitable
thickness, laid on transve se and longitu lino!
sleepers, on which only one carriage is to travel
at one time; this carriage is to be 200 feet long,
25 feet wide, and 15 feet high, un ten wht els,
twain the centre and four at each .end i the
lower part, hetween the wheels to he construe-
ted similar to the hold of a ship, and ap
propriated to luasagp, of which a liberal quan
tity is tube allowed each passenger. The up-
prrpai't of the carriage to contains lobby, at
about the middle, from which a door leads into
agrand saloon, fitted up with all possible elr-
geuce.similur to the state ro- m of a ship with
a slaircuse leading to the roof which is td be
a grand promenade, with a light, but strong,
railing round it five feet high, re-etrililing the
deck of a targe steamship ; on the other sido of
the lobhy is to be a refreshment room, where
refreshments, of all kinds are lobe supplied at
moderate rales, 'with a samll office parted oft'
where a ticket clerk takes money instead of
at the stations. Next is a ladie*-room, filted
up with similar elegance to the saloon, and be
yond ihis another large apartment, with benches
ami table for ihe lower class fares. Tliis mam
moth vehicle is to he propelled by a locomotive
of corresponding power, capable of carrying
fuel and water for this whole iourney, which is
pi be preformed in four hours. Four carriage*
to travel each way per day, starting ft r om both
termini at the same time, passing each other*
at tile turnout in the middle, and ihe first and
second class passenger respectively. One or
two guards will be stationed outlie roof, to see
all safe, manage signals, &c ', and the propoun
der thinks that the enormous saving jn en
gines and carriages, and clerks, and porters al
nations, which are to be merely platforms for
passengers to step on or from, will induce enp-
it disis to find the m mey for forming such a pas
senger line,' the existing lines being retained
asinerolv luggage train..—Mining Journal
Medical Discovery.—It has been ascertained
that the true source of scorbutic disease, as ii
shows itself in our ships and prisons, is ihe
want of potash in the blood ; that salted meat
contains little more thun half the potash in
fresh meats; and that while an ounce of rice
contains only five grains, an ounce of potatoe
contains 1875 gi ains whic'i acennnts for the
great increase ol the disease since the scarcity
of the potatoe. In patients under ihis disease,
the blood is found to be deficient in potash
and it has been nsceriained by experiment that
whatever be the diet, such patients speed
ily recover if a few grains (from twelve to
t-veuty) of some salt of potash be given daily
Lime juice is regularly ordered in the Nnvy.as
a specific for the disease, and the reuson o,
its efficacy is not the acid, but the amount
potash, being 846 grains in an ounce. On
th -*e facts, it seems possible to found n slight
but veiy salu'ary improvement in the Navv
Let a portion of tartrate of potash lie ordered
regularly to he mixed with the lime juice that
is given one for use; amf iet arrangements be
adopted for boiling the salt meat in steam,
large portion of salt will thus be eliminated
and the food made more wholesom. A similar
course might be adopted in work-houses and
prisons. If so simple a remedy is in our hands
it is criminal to neglect it..

TEA CULTIVATION IN THE U. STATES
H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUTS,
collected at great expense ot money and labor,
in the middle districts of China, from the most cele
brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, I am prepared
to fulfil my engagements by uccornmodating the pub
lic with a share of the Nuts received. My main ob
ject is to plant and cultivate; but as I am quite cer
tain that 1 have obtained, after the labor ot three
years, the best quality of Tea Nuts,' I nm disposed to
meet the wishes of the public, and to share, them
with otilers.—Tea Nuts gathered in the neighborhood
of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account
of the inferior quality of the Ten. It is obviously the
interest of the planter to submit to an increased ex-
penee, to secuie a superior quality ot Tea Nut, in es
tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small.
In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in
fact acting as ali agent for the benefit of the public.
Neither the State, the public, or any individual, ha3
ever extended to me tne aid of a single cent.
For convenience and security, the Nuts will be
tacked in tin boxes, and forwarded Irom Greenville,
J. C., by euch conveyance and to such address as the
purchaser may direct, to any part ot the U. States.
TEA PLANTS—now on their passage from Chino,
selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman
of large experience in horticultural pursuits, and p r-
haps better acquainted with the character ot the Tea
Plant, than any person in Europe or America—will
also be shared with those desirous of obtaining a
small supply. . .
A specification of the soil best adapted to the growth
of the plant, the mode of planting, cultivating, &c.
&c„ will accompany each parcel.
Application should be made (post-paid) to the sub-
