new work on Austria, now ia progress. The author
is the Hon. Wm. H. Stiles, of our own State, lato
American Charge to tho Court of Vlena. During a
residence of four years in the country, ho collected,
ample materials for a lull and accurate history of that
Empire, whose recent revolutionary struggles have
made it a subject of interesting inquiry among all
plasues.
We learn that this work, w|iUoemhracing'o detailed
historical review of the different Provinces compos
ing the Empire, will also bringdown the narrative of
events to bur own times; consequently it will embrnco
all the recent events of which Mr. Stiles himself was
an dye witness. It will be a very valuable and interest
ing work, and will doubtless enjoy a wide circulation.

The Dry Goods Trade.
New York, Oct T.
The failure of one or two small dry goods bouses
here during the week, has creuted uo little degree of
seusltlvcneus among the trade, generally. Heuvy im

causes. Dunug the present week the same dullness
noticed last wees has generally prevailed. Prints huve

The arrivals of foreign goods since my last review
have not been very extensive. Jobbers continue to
purchase sparingly, ut private sale, but conffuitig

Southern und Western have shown a great falling off
already. But little activity in inuusline de luines' or

was the heroine of a feat, which is seldom performed
even by thc liaidy peasant* of that part of the coun

Ijourd, some 3900 feet above the level of tlio 6ca.
During the toilsome ascent her Majesty proved her
self to be a first rate pcdcatriuu, and had the advan
tage over Prince Albert in more than one contest for
superiority in surmounting the more rugged points,
where the hands per form fullyas important a part of
the locomotion us the feet, and eventually the Queen
reached the summit the first of the party. The sum
mit of the mountain ia almost void of vegetation, hav
ing the peculiar weather beaten appearance common
to Scotch mountains of like elevation.
Gold in California.—The President in conse-

determined to send out an able assayer, and enable
him to arail himself of the facilities which a well
known and much trusted private assay establishment

want of a mint The awayer will be permitted to put
the United States stamp on the gold money assayed

they require, these people simply demand it of God,

SUGAR.—Since our Report of the 17th ult. there
has not been much business in Sugars, owing to the
increased pretensions of the planters. But the sales
that occurred were at rather higher prices thnn pre
viously given, particularly for the lower grades,
which have been much sought after. The took is
reduced to an insignificant quantity, and only the
remnats of crops are coming in from the coun-
i try. We place our quotations ns follows :—Whites,
9 a 10 rials; fine and choice Whites, 104 a 11 rials,
Yellow, 6} a 7} rials; superior Yellows, g riuls;
Browns, and Cucuruchos, 5} a 6} rials. No Musca-
vados remain hereoriu other parts of tho island.
MOLASSES.—The last transactions in Molasses
were at 1} a 2} rials lor very ordinary to good.
There is but littie left, aud some dealers ure asking
higher rates.

Coffee, but the quantity is too small to admit of trans
actions worthy of notice.

140 casks Carolina imported indirectly realized 11

era on Providence is likely to spreud if they can es
tablish their premises. Not to mention other mat
ters—some time ago, Her Muller and his followers
took it upon their consciences to build a magullici nt
Orpbun House. Their design was beniffeent, the
institution was greatly needed in the district; but in
stead ot adopting thu ordinary machinery ot chari
ly dy appeals to the rich and benevolent—they sim
ply tell on their knees and Hppeuled to Heaven.
ihe responses came in from every corner of Eng-
land, from many cities ou the Continent and in Amer
ica, and in every variety of form. From one contri
butor came u penny, from another a boot-jack, from
a third an ancient coin. Thu farmer forwarded a
cart of manure, the merchant a liogslieud of sugar
the landowner tho product of the sale ofa tree cut
down for the purpose. Women sent in their golden
trinkets, men their clothes. Tables, chairs, sucks of
Hour, III to. lies ot bacon, sides of beef, beds, tooth
picks, coats, hats, shoes, washbuud stands, and so
forth, came pouring in. The money contributions
were liuit-penee, shillings, pounds; tue latter in hun
dreds and in thousands. All these things came it is
said us the levies of faith. What is certain is, tile
building is there, on Ashley Down, ill arrangement
proportion, completeness of design ano detail, it is
one ut tile noblest lubries of the country, it is al
ready occupied by theree hundred children und the
same means by which it was erected in the first in
stance, und is now maintained, ure ubout to be em
ployed lor its further enlargement. No one is per
sonally applied to for « farthing: the whole is icltto
the secret influences of the spirit. Yet. accordin'- to

er seen, to whom he has not made known his ease

. These ure strange facia to record among the mate
rials tor the history of tho times, Mormonites and
Millerites in the midst ol railways, penny postage aud
half-penny steuiuboats! i’oiutuig to the noble edifice

story, wing alter wing, udded themselves in answer
to prayers offered ou bended knees.”—The mystery
which envelopes the affair should not however blind
us to the manUestinconvenieuces of such a creed aud
practice in weak hands. The thirty odd thousand
pounds is only purt—the orphans part—of the wealth
iorwarded to Herr Muller in answer to his celestiul
supplications; and the fact that the newpipoatle seems
to have hitherto used his dungcrous power with
discretion inuy be uu uncertain guarantee for his lit
lure moderation or that of his successors. 11 the
