[HE MORNING NEWS,
Appointments for California.
Washington, Oct. 20.
I T. Butler King, Esq., Collector for the port of San
Irancisco, has - appointed our fellow-townsmen.
Michael Dulany and Geo. Noyse; also Guthrie, of
icnnsylvauia, inspectors of revenue for the aboveport,
hey will leave on Monday for California.
1 Has Mr. King, of Georgia, no friends in Georgia?
Kis a little strange that the people of California, who
jere deeraod so worthy ot a State organization,
Jniuot famish some of her own State office? s. The
resilient lias been sometime searching about for
judge?, revenue officers, &c., for the new State, and
las, we believe, made appointments from New-York,
Pennsylvania. Louisiana and Georgia. Why is this?
Ire there none among the Sovereigns of Squafter-
oin worthy the confidence of the administration ?
i is a little remarkable that so large a State cannot
lisli its own officers. We of Georgia, who do not
|over a tenth part of the area of California, would
rselvea poorly oft* indeed if wo could not
brnish office-holders—aye, honest, capable, disin-
nested office-holders, lor nil the States in the union,
nil we would take it in high dudgeon if “the powers
bat be" at Washington, were to attempt to supply us
[ith Collectors, Inspectors, Judges, &c., &c., from
liicr States.

Correspondence of the Daily Morning News
Now York. Oct. 21.
I was misinformed with regard to the l’arodl,
who is to bo the star of the opera this season,
it seems, and is now on her way to America in the
steamer Pacific ; so that white-kid-dom, is again in
a tlutter.
The working class, had an opportunity, last night,
of seeing Tripler Hall, and listening to some fine mu
sic for 50 cents encli : it was, of course, n social con'
cert, hut some of tho very straight-laced are
much shocked at the idea of such an affair taking
place on the sabbath. As it is n matter of con-
scencc, however, whether to'nttend Sunday concerts
or not, I otter no opinion on the subject; hut this, l
may say, that those who do attend them, might he in
much worse places.
The success of the steamship Florida is now ho
yond all doubt. I understand that, as many pasecn.
gel's were refused, for want of accommodation, ns
went in her on Saturday. Her arrival will, of course,
anticipate my letter.
Tho wings of tho city, 'are busy to-dny, nt their
primary elections, and to-mori row and next day tho
nominations will be made for Mayor, City Judge,
District Attorney, Congress nnd Assembly. 1 hear
that Luther Rraidish. ex-Lieut. Governor, is tho fa
vorite for Mayor of tho Whig committees. With har
mony in the ranks, and with good men, I begin to
think City and Stnte will go Whig.
We have glorious weather hero just now; bright
but chilly ; the city continues very healthy. The
deaths last week only numbered 2fi!l; nnd of these
113 were hoys and girls. Business, however, is not
particularly brisk ; still few nre found to complain.
For my part, I think ttiat there is very little reason
fur compiaint—every one seems lobe doing pretty
well; nnd when it is remembered that provisions and
house rent nre about double what they were some
years since, it is evident that business must have in
creased in proportion. The house rent in New-York
is shamefully high uu I consequently, two, three and
even more families often occupy but one house. Not
nny kind|of a house, in n moderately good situation
can he hired for less than $350, and very few at that
The consequence is, that n large number of persons
are compelled to look out for places in the suburbs. '
But associations arc now springing up very fast
whereby, with economy, every man can own a house
and lot within a few miles of the city. The members
pay a weekly stipend, and when the fund is large
enough, a desirable site is purchased and divided into
lots, each member being entitled to one or more, in
proportion to tho amount of the weekly payment;
as for instance: for one lot, a man pays 25 cents a
week, for two 50 cents, and so on; no one being al
lowed more than four—size 25 feet broad by 100
deep. These associations number, I am told, a great
many thousand members.
The Forest Case is on the calendar in the Supreme
Court for argument, lint was not reached this morn
int. The question is ns to the legality of Forest’s ar
rest on a writ of tie exeat; the J urlqes bring divided ill
opinion. Mr. F. looks very rowdyish .hist now, his

Two literary dentils occurred here last week, a
French magazine the “Revue tics Nouveau Monde
and a clover brochure called “The Lorgnette" which
hit otf the folks of the time very cleverly. They
nre not much missed however, for their circulation
was very limited. Who the author of the Lorgnette
paper was, is a mystery; he called himself John Ti

The subject of annexing Brooklyn to New York
is to he decided upon soon. On Thursday the joint
committees meet, and a report will shortly afterwards
be made in favor of it, I presume ; at least the au.
thorities of both cities are favorable, but whether
tho people will consent, 1 dont know—.perhaps they
wont be asked.
The Now York nnd New Jersy Synod have been
in session in Brookliu for the past two or three days.
Tho last subject in debate was the action of Congress
on the subject of reclaiming fugitive slaves. A reso
lution disapproving of it, hut recommending colored
brethren to wait the action of the laws of the State,
nnd submit to the advice of the Presbyteries was dis
cussed, but thnt did not go far enough, for some, who
wanted to declare the law unconstitutional, hut they
could not carry their point, and the subject was laid
on the table. CHARLEMAC.
Autumnal Thoughts. “Theleaf withereth, the flow
er fudeth." Yes, the flower fades and tho leaf with
er and dies indeed, hut does pot fade. It is com
mon to talk of the sober livery of the autumn ami tho
sadness of the waning year. But the universal leaf
which gives character to the season while it lasts, is
never so cheerful nnd even gay, us just before its de
cay. At other times, in its youthful vigor, it is dark
and unreflecting. But » hut can equal its variegated
splendor when about to take its departure, unless it
is the glories of the evening sky at sunset 1 Nature
as well us man, never appears so beautiful and devine
as at the close of certain epochs in their cycle, when
they dress themselves in their funeral robes to hid
farewell to life, the forest, and the heavens. The
time of his departure is not the season for the good
man to he sad. Nature teaches us another lesson.
The cold and frost, that presage death, touch her
tresses with crimson mid with gold. 'The last threads
that are woven in the we i of human lifo, are all
ot shining silver. No sombre colors arrest the eye,
as the sun sinks below the horizon, ns the leaf of
autumn trembles in its beams, and man declines.
But prophetic hues sometimes play around these
farewell scenes, till death withdraws the gorgeous
veil, that hides the everlasting fires of night, a d
reveals to us a universe of worlds, which eyes, blind
ed by the splendors of this, were unable to perceive.
The sweetest cadenza, the must triumphant chorus
of Hallelujahs often compose the closing harmonies
of tile grand ornt 'rio of life.
