Correspondence of the Daily Horning News. NEW-YORK, Dec. 20, 1850. Tho city is remnrkably dull to day ; that is, du’l forNew-Yurk, because there is aiwnys considerable of a bustle here, and a continued din in the streets, and constantly crowded sidewalks, though little may bo ttirring to furnish material for a letter. The westher has been unfavorable for shoppers for the past two ur three days; and just now there is a great deal of that going on here, for we are close up. on tbs holiday season, when Santa Clause is expected by the juveniles, aud every body anticipates receiv ing some token either of 1 >ve or 1 riendship. Conse quently the t >y-ihops, tho jewelers, aud fancy store keepers are displaying their varied temptations, and crowds throng such places daily. Then we have New Years too, with its gifts, and New-Year's calls ; the latter a very p.easant practice handed down to tr. by tho Knickerbockers. Many estranged hearts become re-united on that day—many agreea. these requirements were comp .led with, and ho was cast in the penalty of $1000 each. The Cherokee has arrived to-day, with two million of dollars and dates from San Francisco to Nov. 16.— It is estimated that nearly two thousand deaths have occurred l'roln Cholera, iu various parts of the State. The scourge was abatiug, however, at the last ac. counts. The news is not of much interest. CHARLEMAC. [FYom the Charleston Mercury.] Welcome Sonnets to Jenny Lind. UPON HER ARRIVAL IN CHARLESTON: What shall thy welcome be, fair queen of song, To this bright land of sunshine and of flowers! Where golden jasmines bloom 'mid winter bowers, And rotes all the year their fragroncy prolong! We will not greet thee with tumultuous throi g, Or strive to mock thy wondrous vocal powers, In wild bravos and shouts displaying ours, To make strange contrast of the sweet and strong I We will not gaze into thy gentle face, Till indignation flushes in thy cheek, That men should take thee for a raree show: Thy gentleness shall teach us better grace, Thy modesty to every heart shall speak. And, like deep waters, silently our joy shall flows, A Sontbem wel. ome we will give to thee; llird ut the distant North—sweet nightingale! As geuial ps our clime where suns prevail, And as our summer breezes, warm and free, Our raptured souls shali drink iu melody From thy sweet strains, now gentle as a tale O) love, now swelling to a mighty gale, That stirs the spirit likes wind tossed sea, We shall acknowledge thee High Priest of song. And to thine altars our oblations bring, f- it tribute to thy genius and thy art; Rut we will d , thv gentleness no wrong, Nor in thy path obtrusive chaplets fling? Content to pay thee homage with the loving licnrt I PHILOMEL. PRENTICE'S WACO. T It O H I s h'OW A HD, ATTORNEY AT LA IV. MY OFFICE IS NO. 97 BAY-STREET, dec 6 ly Savannah, Os.
