humorous farce, together with the excellent
music of the Palmetto Baud, will make an at
tractive bill for the eveuiug.
l£T Out of all the preparatious and devices
adopted for attack or defence at Charleston
remarks the Wilminglou Journal, but oue new
invention has been proved useful or efficient—
the Brooke guu. We do uot say that the works
planned were not well aud skilfully devised
and executed, or thul the irou-clads with their
hiteen inch guns were not formidable. But the
Jorts were old fashioned forts. The batteries
were constructed according to well known
iuIm—the Monitors were mere mechanical ar
Tangtunente for Invulnerability, but wanting iu
efficiency as means of attack. The Brooke guu
with its square headed bolts ot chilled Iron
showed iiself superior to the monster ordnance
of the enemy, which bad no new (dement, and
only diflered from the old Dahlgreu guns lo
size, and even in that the big gnns of the Moni
tore were far behind several brass gnns made
long ago for the Sultuu ol Turkey ortho Gieal
Mogul at Delhi.
Important Capture.—A late letter from
Brownsville, published in the ban Antonio
(Texan) Herald, says “ A Yankee ship was
wrecked on our side of the Rio Grande a day or
two since. Wo got 1000 barrels of flour, lfiOO
sackB of corn, a lot of shoes, huts, etc. We
took twelve Yankees prisoners, who were
taken to Brownsville. That will help the
troops here, especially the 3d regiment.

The Monitor*
Alter months of labor—the exhaustion of
Yankee Ingenuity, Inspired by the most power
fill incentives to Yaukee exertion—spite and
despair -after millions ol dollars hiv« been ex
pended, the Monitors have been completed,
launched, and fairly tried before the imlonleheil
gise ol the world. Inhered on the scene of
acliou with all the prestige which could be giv
en by the bravado of a press which mistakes
license for freedom, nations stood breathless,
awaiting the exulting shout of triumph over
the first great victory of Yaukee ingenuity over
Southern valor.
Charleston, they had decided, must be re
duced. Where the slurs and stripes were for
the first time trailed iu the dual—where they
were so deeply humiliated two years since—they
must strike it decisive blow for the subjugation
>f this hot btd of rebelliou. Our noble sol-
liery, commanded by tbe best uud bravest offi
cers, awaited calmly, quietly, aud with what
patience they could, the coining ol this mon
stcr Monitor fleet. Our salute of thirteen guus
has thrilled every heart in our Confederacy, and
111 be echoed far down the aisles of llme

d into our harbor. What a good account they
would be able to give of themselves at home.
True, old Sumter frowued formidably ou them.
She was known to be strong. Had uot their own
press heralded her to the world aaasccond Gib.
rallar v They would admit her strength, their
glory in her reduction would be greater. For

What was done by our defenders need not be

Lincoln’s Fast Dat.—We notice that sev

Confederate service, has been gettiug ready for

The Old HeconatrticUoii Story Again.
The New York Herald of the 8lh March per-
petraied the following :
"Wc speak from a positive knowledge of the
matojial facts, wheu we suy that some two
months ago, from rebel sources at Richmond,
an overture was made, through au intermediate
party in New York, to President Lincoln, lor
peace upon the basis of return lo the Congress
of the Union of representatives duo from a re
bellious Slate aud n general amnesty, and that
President Lincoln’s answer to this overture was
that the time had not arrlvedfor the considers
don ot any such propositions.”
We arc surprised lo see this same absurd
story eel forth by Mr. Vallaudigham, iu his lute
speech in Hamilton couuty, Ohio.
In that speech he Is reported to have said
On the Pith of last December, when from tbe
city of Richmond information came to the city
of New York that thore was a disposition to
compromise and retnru delegates to the Na
tional Congress aud be obedient to tho Consti
tution and the laws, and thus roatore the Union
os It was, the President, ou that day, rejected
the proposition, and the damniug evidence of
that rejection exists in New York over his owu
autograph, (cries, bear, hear]—but there is an
obligation of secrecy at present, aud the letter
bas not yet been given to the public. The day
after the Federal army crossed the Rabpahau-
nock Into Fredericksburg, under the belief that
Richmond was lo fall, and thus end the rebel
lion. The day previous Abraham Lincoln re
]ected all propositions to return, over his own
siguuture , and the day after, the hones of the
blind man in the While House were diselpitalud
In the defeat at Fredericksburg, aud the loss
of 20,000 of our sous and brothers. He could
b&ve entertained the proposition on tho 10th of
December, but he heedleas’y uud wickedly
drove away all overtures.
We can hardly suppose that Mr. Yallandiu-
ham would be guilty of a misrcpiescntaliou,
*»nd can only account for his statement on the
presumption that the Democracy ol New York
have been imposed upon by some uuscrupu
joua Yankee schemer, ll written evidence of
such a proposition on the part of our Govern
ment existed in New York it would be the pol
icy of tbe Yankees so make it public. Buck a
disclosure would do more lo demoralize our
Government and discourage our people tkau
the loss of a dozen pitched battles. Tbe idea
of each a proposition having been mado in De
cember last or at any other time since the for
mation of the Confederate Government, is ut
terly absurd.
From tue Bar.—Uu Friday morulug one of
the Yankee blockadcrs, supposed to be the gun
boat Flambeau, crossed the bar aud commenced
firing on the wreck ol the Keokuk. Two small
boats with parties from Morris’ lalund were at
^ork upon the wreck, endeavoring lo bilng
away some additional trophies. Tin parties
retired, the guuboat firing at them but doiug
no damage. Several shots passed over the Moi-
rts’ Island batteries. One ol our batteries
optned fire, it is believed with effect, an tbe
Yankee host hastily backed out of range, uot
XskiDg time to turn round, and shortly after re-
crossed the bar. The /unboat Cbicora steamed

xhe enemy bad withdrawn and gone out to sea

Our Priaouera at Cauip Douglas.
Among the prisoners brought up by the fi ig
ot truce boat, ou last Monday, were some from
the West, who have been confined at Caui|

poor fellows is euough to strike pity to the
heart. We wish the Government could ,

hope lhal they will lake some step to lay their
grievauees in-fore the authorities here.
Camp Douglas is worse limn the Hole of C il

surgeons! The authorities tried lo exculpate
themselves by lay iug it to au old Irish woman
who was permitted lo peddle cakes auioug the
prisoners.
The death of our men at Camp Douglas has
been appalling. (Jueol our prisoners estimates
that ill the short space of three months (here
were over seven hundred and filly deaths.—
This was caused by a combination of causes—
tbo low, wet and marshy situation of ibe camp
being hall in water, tin* film aud Vermin ol the

our men. In fuel, some of ibe imsoucrs

there for nearly two yours, aud their dejected
sorrow stricken aud emaciated faces bore test I

The suffering t»» which our brave uieu have
been subjected by the demons is enough to
melt the heart to tears. Even iu the

thrown tutu prison, with uotbiug more than

they sweep over the prairies. Iu all the
our men lay exposed to tbe storm, cold and

came, aud the result was that twenty five <
thirty of our uieu actually froze to death. W
