young company exerted tbeinsclvea to ploase, and
they succeeded admirably. To-night the beautiful
nautical play of “Black eyed Busan” will be repeated

Th* Oath to be .Taken ht Tax I’avkri.—The
Legislature, at its late session, passed

them to swear that the property returned was not
worth ou the 1st of April, in this year, more than the
valuations aflixed to it in Con/'derate Trenttuty note*,

Robbery —For some time past our citizens have
been annoyed by a gang of petty thieves who make
it a practice to pilfer anything they esu lay their
hands on. Tbe police have from tune to time becu
on their track, and occasionally have succeeded Iu ar
casting a few of them. About ten days since two
were arrested and committed to jail, but the balance
of the gang have continued their depredation* when
ever au opportunity offered.
On Tuesday morning, between the hours of two
and tares o’clock, a policeman discovered nil tul run
niug downs lane with a large quantity or clothing,
to whom he gave chase. The thief threw hit plunder
away, but was arrested by another police officer, who
took him to tbe harrucks. There he gave his name
as William Tokusuon, and said he was from Henry
county, aud had arrived in this city lint a f< w weeks
tinea, with a company of soldiers. Hu implicated
another boy iu the then, and infoia, eel 1 ho police
that 'his associate had In his possession a large
aruouut of goods. The police also arrested this l»oy,
aud both appeared before the Mayor yesterday morn
lng. Tomlirbon admitted the then, and said that
he, with others, had forced open the clothing store
of Mr. William ('ox, on the Hay, aud stole the goods
therefrom. Mr. l.'ox identified the goods us hia own
Thsy consisted of pants, coals, hats, suspenders,
pocket-books, Ac, amounting in value to some
three or four hundred dollars. Tomlhson stated
that this was but a small portion ol the good* sto
len, and that his companions had taken a larger
quantity.
The Mayor turned Tomumon over to a magistrate
for prosecution. The oluer boy was held in custody
until more ev idence could tie procured, and soiqe clue
obtained in relation to life other goods.
Mr. Cox could not yesterday mormug tell the ex'
teut of his loss, but it is supposed to he at least a
thousand dollars. We must uot forget to give prr
per credit to Policemen P. Ryan, R. Wickam and'
Thomas Keenan for their exertions in arresting
these young thieves. We hope they will be enabled
to break up the gang. It is strongly suspected that
some of In esc same boys robbed a grocery store last
wsek in Whitaker, near Broughton street.
Gin. Joseph K. Johnston.—Never, remarks the
Jdid groat military genius have grander
field for display, or deeper stake to coutend for, or
stronger inducement to effort aud success, ihau the
grest man who stands at the helm iu the army of
Tennessee. The country feels the liveliest interest
—not anmingied with uuxiety—In the great battle
now tmmlueut iu that department. Our people feel
at tbe same t me confidence aud hope of the result.
With such sn army—with Johnston to plan—with
Bragg to execute—with choice of position- w ith God
on cur side, the country has rested in hope. It is
the duty oi the Government to lurnieh all the re
quired means aud numbers to insure success, it that
bs practicable. May the result be such as to place
the name of Johuaton in history side by aide w ith
the illustrious Lee, aud the army of Teuuessee with
the army of Virginia. One great victory there, aud
we move North !
