or A gentleman recently from .Memphis In
forms the Jackson Afississippian that Adams A
Co.’s Express cannot furnish adequate transp or
tation for the valuables stolen from private resi
dences by the Federal soldiery. Packages from
the size of a trunk down to the size of a bar of
toilet soap, fill these wagons to their utmost
pacity, and the goods are being sent north to
tbe families and friends of the robbers. Tbe
amount of stolen valuables thus sent out of the
country is astonishing. Family plate, mirrors,
carpets, paintings, and thousands of articles,
whose value will Justify transportation, are thus
daily moviug ont by boat loads. In the Feder
al camps, fine Brussels carpets are to be found
on the floors of tents; fine bureaus, flue pianos,
etc., etc. _ _ _
Colonization or Blacks.—A Washington
telegram says that "the President has closed
the contract proposed some time ago by Mr.
Barnard Cock, for tbe voluntary coloniration
of five thousand persons, at a cost of flty dol
lars each, to be paid by the United States, the
colonists to be furuisbed with free farms on the

How the Ysukses Off Cotton
The Jackson Mississippi art is informed by a
gentleman direct from Memphis, in whose
statements the tditor places implicit confidence,
that twenty-two hundred bales of cotton lay
on the levee last week, advertised for sale on
government aceount. This cotton bad been
stolen from the captured territory, or seized iu
the bauds of those trading contrary to the trade
regulations. Twenty thousand bales were ex
S eoted from Helena, Ant., during tbe month of
an nary. Very mauy cotton raisers have avail
ed themselves of the facilities afforded to sell
their cotton to ihe Yankee traders at Memphis;
forty planters, ou one boat from below Mem
phis, came up with large shipments of cotton,
took tbe oath of allegiance to Lincoln, sold
their cotton lor greenbacks, and then bought
Confederate money, with gieeubacks, at a dis
count upon our curreucy of sixty cents on the
dollar ; that is, rating greeibacks at par, they
exchanged for Confederate notes at forty cents
In the dollar.
A very conslderaole stock of cottcn has been
shipped to the North; and many producers have
eagerly availed tnemselves of Yankee permis
sion to sell their cotton to their masters aud
their country’s foes. When the railroads were
first opened from Memphis into the interior,
their freighting capacity were taxed to the ut
most to trausport cotton freely offered tor sale.
Bo much for tbe high patriotism of a large
number of cotton producers within the Federal
lines. _ ^
Tbe Harder of Capt. Freeman.
A letter from a reliable gentleman in tbe ar
my at SheUijvllle to the Mobile Register gives
the following particulars of the assassination
ol the noble and gailaut Freeman :
"1 wrote yon, in my last, an account of tbe
assassination (as it maybe truly called) of Cap
tain Freeman, commanding a battery in Van
Dorn’s command, and taken, with a part ol his
battery, at the attack on Franklin, Tenn.
"Yesterday Geu. Polk seut me with import
ant dispatches to Van 'Dorn’s headquarters, and
I there learnt, from parties who took part in
the engagement, all tbe particulars of the fight
It seems when Capt. Freeman's battery was
captured, and he and his subordinate officers
sent to the rear, our cavalry made a dash at the
Yankees, resolving to recapture our battery at
all hazards. The Yaukeee, to meet the charge,
ordered Capt. Freeman to take command of his
guns and use then against our cavalry. To thin
lubuman demaud the brave Freeman flatly re
fused obedience, aud instantly fell pierced by
more than a hundred balls. The fact of his as
sasslnation immediately reached our men, and
they Instantly resolved, one and all, that do
more prisoners were to be takeu—the black
flag, in all Us dreadful purport, was raised, and
the gallant Freeman was avenged.
"I have it from an officer iu Van Dorn’s com
mend, that not one prisoner was that day taken,
and tbe hatred existing between our cavalry
and that of the enemy has been greatly in
creased.
"Van Dorn is now anxiously, but patiently,
awaiting the advent of Rosencranz’s 20,000
