The hour having arrived for the election of
State House officers, the Senate repaired to tin:

sembly proceeded to elect a Secretary of Stale.
The name of Col. N. C. Barnet tho present in
cumbent, was announced for relection, also the

and referred to a joint committee of live.
A resolution to bring ou -ibe election of a
Confederate Senator, to succeed*ihe Hon. 11. V.
Johnson, on Wednesday, the 25:h lust., was
adopted.
Mr. Cone moved that the Journal of the Seuato
snail show the result of to-day’s election for
1 louse officers—agreed to.
Adams culled ttp'hts resolution requesting
Congress to pass an act to conscribe all persons
who refuse to receive Confederate treasury notes
in payment, of all debts, dues or demands, with
out any regard to their age; aud proceeded to
address the. Senate In support of Ids resolution,
showing very clearly that iu this gigantic strug
gle all should make sacrifices cheerfully, and
should uphold and maintain tho currency of the
country, which is its very life-blood.
Mr. Pottle followed iu reply, and urged many
serious objections to the adoption of such a poli
cy. It would, he said, put the aged and the do-
crepid into the army. He would join the Sena
tor In his denunciation ol those who refuse to
receive this money, but could uot support the
policy of such a measure.
Mr. Adams rejoined and addressed himself to
the constitutional view of the question as p
rented by the Senator from the liUh, and ]
needed to show that no constitutional provis
ion was infringed by tho resolution, that the
rights of the citizen were unaffected by it.—
He could sue his claims id tho Courts aud d<
inand gold and silver iu payment as before, and
therefore he would urge the adoption of the re
solution.
Mr. Walker agreed with Mr. Pottle. He did
not believe tbiil ihn adoptiou ol the resolution
would secure the cud contemplated by its
mover. The laws oi t rade and ol commerce
were as fixed and unalterable as the laws of
gravitation, aud no coercive measures could re
store our depreciated currency to its pristine
value. Temporary measures to bolster up cur
rency were injurious in practice and mischiev
ous in the extreme, and could only work disas
ter and ruin to the country.
Mr. Speer agreed with those who opposed
the measure, and would move its reference to
the Committee on Finance.
Colonel Gauldeu believed, that the adoption
of some stringent measure was necessary to
improve our finances and restore our enrreuey,
but entertained the opinion that the resolution
could not affect that purpose, btit would sug
gest u remedy that in hi ’, judgment would ae
complish the purpose. It is to impose a tax.on
