SENATE.
The Senate was opened with prayer by Prof.
Lone, of Oglethorpe University.
Alter reading the journal, Mr. Johnson moved
to take tip a resolution requesting the Governor
to use ids inllnence to have the Slate Guard dis
banded lor tin* purpose ol gathering crops,
sowing wheat, Ac. Agreed to. Thu resolution
was discursed lor a lew moments, pul on Its
passage and lost.
Leave of absence was granted to Messrs.
Adams and Barr.
The Senate concurred in the amend incut of
the House to consolidate certain slaudiug com
mittees.
The Senate resumed the unfinished business
of yesterday, which was the. consideration of
the bill to prevent the planting of over a cer
tain quantity of laud iu cotton iu this State
during the war with the abolitionists.
Col. Gaulden, having the floor, proceeded to
address the Senate iu opposition to the coualilti -
liouuliiy and sound policy ol the measure, and
commended the patriotism and devotion of the
planting interest In yielding a hearty acquies
cence in the act sought to be amended by ibis
bill.
Col. Ramsay followed next in support of the
bill, allowing that duly and patriotism went
bond in baud in the adoption ot the bill.
Col. Walker spoke In opposition to any fur
ther restriction of the cotton planting interest,
arguing that three acres lo the band, as pro
vided by the act sought to tie aiUL'.di-d, could
bn cultivated without Injury to a large grain
crop.
Col. Chambers supported the bill, and gave
the reasons ol the Committee on Agriculture
nud Internal improvement iu recommending
the passage of the bill.
The motion lo ttrlke out the provision to
prevent any one Irom planting more than lilty
Were? was, on the call of yean and nays, lost.
The further consideratiou of the bill was, on
on motion, postponed lo 3 o'clock Wednesday
next.

A bill to Increase the pay of oUlcers and sol

Special Committee of one from each Congres
sional District; consists of Messrs. lUwls, Burls,
Fleming, Wallace, Lawson, Barney Bighain,
Huggins and Wood.
The bitluuce of the morning sc—ion was con
sumed in reading bills a second time. The
House then adjourned lo Monday morning.

On the other hand wc know many who use Ihu
syrup freely, and who pronounce it as whole
some ns auy other syrup. As tbc article is
being very generally introduced as a substitute
for molasses, wc think the question of its un-
wbolcsoraencss should be scientifically iuvtsii-
gated aud determined.

paragraph has no personal ucquaintaueo with
Gun. Bmgg. On the contrary, Ids army asso
ciations were with those supposed to entertain
unkind feelings towards tills Gcucrul. We do
not wish to continue this controversy, but can
not forbear asking whether the opinions ol the
editor are worth more than those ol a soldier,
who, alter disposing of some business matters,
