1337“ Early iu 1802, Messrs. Howell Cobb
Robert Toombs, M. J. Crawford aud T. R. r!
Cobb issued a datuing aud patriotic appeal to
the citizens of Georgia. Among tkefa&ls slated
by these honorable gentlemen wus this :
With whatever alacrity our peoplu may rush
to arms and with whatever energy our Govern
ment may use its resources, we canuot expect
to cope with our enemy either in numbers,
equipments or muullions of war. To provide
against these odds, we must look to desperate
courage, undiuchlng daring and univerau* sell
sacrifice.
This fact is equally true now. Their flret
counsel to the people was this :
Aa a nation we should be uuited, forbearing
to one another, Downing tnon all factious op
position and serious criticisms, nut! giving a
trustful and generous confidence to those select
ed as our leaders iu the camp aud the council
chamber.

is in Chattanooga, irying to get the body ot his

iu the camps aud hospitals lor the entertain
