l£T Tbe uiercliauta of New York are out iu
a loug appeal to the Yankee Secretary of the
NavVi begging him to pul down the rebel priva
teers. They eomplaiu most bitterly of the
h? doue by ilium ou Ibu Yankee shipping.
The Yunkee merehunls say that apart from the
loss, it is humill.itinn to our pride as ciiir.cnn or
the lirsl naval power ou the earth, that a couple
of Indiflereully e pupped rebel cruisers should
for so long u period threaten our eoniDierce
with annihilation. Thu letter ngaiu says that
“it is humiliating that their commerce on the
high seas should have beeu left so unprotected
as to iuduce rebel iusolcuce to attack our flag
almost at the entrance of our harbors, nud to
lually blockade our merchantmen ul the Capo
oi Good Hope recently.*’ The Yankee Secretary
plies, and says that he has doue all iu bis
power to capture the privuteers; that swill
steamers have constantly been iu pursuit of
them ; and hopes to be soon able to dispatch u
larger force to pursue the pirates. The Herald
says that the subject has long wouuded the
pride of every citizen of the republic; despairs
of Secretary Welles doing anylhlug ; and trusts
to Cougrcss “to bag the pirates.”

General Bragg was serenaded last uight bj

mo-1 feeling and touching luuuner. lie look a
long and sad farewell, .assuring them that the
memory ol his association with them would
ever hold frot-h in his uiiud.
General Bate was called for and made a most
benulilul allusion to the career of Gen. Bragg,

THE ENEMY BACK INTO CHATTANOOGA
[Special to the Republican.]
Dalton, Dec. 9.—General Bragg has bee
lieved, at his own request, ot the command oi
the Army of Tonueusee, and General Hardee
takes his place lor the present, peilups perittu
ncutly.
Tho enemy has been forced back across the
Chicks tuuugu.
Grant, Thomas and Hooker were all present
nt the battle of Ringgold, when Cleburne i
llicted such terrible losses on tho enemy. I
killed and wounded are now estimated at t
ii.d.
Finding Bragg’s army uot routed ami de
moralised, us they supposed, the enemy re
treated to Chattauooga, first, however, utterly
destroying the town of Ringgold, In their

Atlanta Confederacy,
From Tenuesoee.
The news is butler. W^wiil noa undertake
to say that Knoxville Is certainly ours, but these
are our reasons for believing it at preseul. We
will premise, however, by saying that the tele
graph wires down from Atlanta got out of work-
iuefcorder about 12 o’clock yesterday, and we
hardly expect to get a dispatch from that place
before going to press. It is certain that news
of the capture of Knoxville was received at
Dalton on Monday uight, and generally credited
there. “290,” ot the intelligencer, us will be
seeu, telegraphs it as a fact to that paper, aud
the other Atlanta papers credit it. lu addition
to this, a trleud every way credible, saw uud
conversed with a wouuded soldier who arrived
by the Atlanta train yesterday uoou, and who
slated that he was wounded in the capture of
Knoxville, that he saw the surrender, and saw
Burnside a prlsouer of war after the fact. The
tuuu was highly intelligent aud wore the appear
ance of reliability. We made some effort to Uud
hltn aud gel the stalemeut from bis own lips,
but could not come across him during the after
noon.
He stated to our Informant that Knoxville
capitulated on Saturday morniug last, with the
whole of the garrison—rangiug somewhere be-
tween 7,000and 10,000 men—he'could dt>i speuk
more precisely. The place was not carried by
ars.iuli, but by bombardment. We give the lu-
icrmailcu as we get it. There is uo doubt uf
the fact that our iuformaut beard the account,
and was impressed with its truth. It is also
true that news was received in the lelegiuph
oilicc here from the tolegrapbic operator at Dal
ton, Monday night, that information hud beeu
received there of the capture ot Kooxvlllo.
in regard to Bragg's situation, matters are ai-
• brighter than the reports of Mouduy. His
army is stated to be iu good conditiou. The
enemy’s advance has beeu cheeked uud he
has been drivcu backward beyond Kiuggold,
uud has buroed the bridges to prevent pursuit.
Bragg's headquarters have beeu moved beyoud
Ringgold, and the army is beyond that point.—
If our wounded soldier’s story be true, the rail
road counectiou with Longsireet is yet unin
terrupted, and in the preseul position ol
Bragg’s army, a jauction very easy.
