5th Guorgia, and iu discipline, has had a good
effect, as Gea. Wheeler has issued very stringent
orders about straggling. Our corps commaud-
er and brigade |comwanders seem cool in the
hour of danger, observing all the different posi
tions, watching the mancuavres oi the enemy,
and posting their men with th .t quietude which
shows the skillful commander, aud almost al
ways insures success.
The third of July was the most trying day to
us that we have had since we arrived utthe front.
Previous to tfcat we bad occupied the trenches ^
on the right ot the infantry line, and although
Weru .many tipies under a tierce lire from the
enemy T s batteries, we felt secore aud* quite
comfortabl;; but on iheSd instkut opened a day
of fatigue and distress to many. The morning
of the third the regiment was in the saddle
about 8 o’clock, a. m M and the bilgAde drawn
up in un old field in front ot Col. Anderson’s
quarters, we being a little to the right and rear
ol Kennesaw. Heie we remained until niter'
sunrise; and us the golden rajs kissed the brow
of Kenuesaw, aud 1 kuow Geu. Johnston’s army
had retired Iroui it, l felt as though l was about
to bid larewoll to a long tried Irig^d. Mauy a
time had its rougheued heart received the mis
siles of death rent to crush its brave defenders,
and sent back from the mouths ot the huge
caunon the iron bolts ol dctlance.
Our brigade was about the lust to leave, and
consequently was the rear of our retreating
army, a very heavy aud tU^pouBiblu position.
Geu. Johnston’s army on the right had with
druwu about six miles, aud the cavalry were to
over the retreat and retard the eueiny as much
as possible. Our advance was very slow, conse
quently we bud uot passed Marietta more Lhuti
a mile aud a half wheu Col. Anderson ordered
all but the first squadron to disuioujit, which
was Instautiy done,'and a ‘line t)t bailie formed
on the railroad; the led horseB, under command
of Major Davaut, guarded by the first equadron,
commanded by Captuiu M. N. McCall, were
moved forward to be kept out of reach oi l^e
enemy. Thu sccoud squadron, Lieut. Brower
comtnandiug, third squudrou. Captain Marsh,
fourth, Capt. Best, uud filth, Cupl. Wulit.our,
composed the regiment dismounted, uil corn
inauded by Lieut. Col. Bird. We hud bueu iu
iiue only a few miuutue wheu the Federal ilag
was seen in tho woods, aboqh a hull mile to our
front. Almost iustuntaneously a wreath of smoke
curled up through the leafy cuuupy, uud u shell
went whistling over our heads, l’he second
squ idrou was sent out as skirmishers, aud were
lyiug betweeu us aud the Yankee battery.—
When the bullciy opened we look to the rail-*
road embankments lor protection. Out artil
lery commenced a duel wilh the Yankee, aud it
was a most terrific fire, pluciug the second
squadron us lt)cy lay in an open field iu ajnost
perilous position, as the shell from both butte
ries burst amongst them; three men of I troop
were wounded while lying in this pq&iliou. The

On the 5th Inst, we crossed the Chattahoo

army. Since that lime we have ei joyed some
repose, or, rather, romaiudd in the same comp.
The dntieB uf the regiment are silil very heavy
The enemy is across the river, on our rigid, in
considerable lorce, and are only wuiting for the
remainder to make a lorward movement,

general movements ol both armies, irom other
sources, I will conBne myself to onr regiment
We have been shifting onr position almost
every day until we crossed the river. We have
been ln line ol battle behind feuces, in the
trenches, on the railroad, in the woods, and in
the fields—In every imaginable position that
cavalry or infantry could aeenme, it has been
oar lot to occupy, on the 19th of June Col. R.

connecting with the third squadron. They had
been contending with the enemy for some lime.
Suddonly they were 6oen (o rise fiom ihe rail

cause of Ibis sudden move, so much like flighp
The* 'right of the rug.menl was now exposed,
and there was un open apace which; if Ihe ene

murderous Are. Our boys saw what they
thought was a regular stampede, but every one
remain d Brmly at his post, waiting for their
oBlcers to say move. Soon orders came for U6
to move by the flank down the railroad We
had to try the double quick lor tome distance,
as the enemy were trying to A ink us. Wo could
see three lines of battle moving parallel with
the road. This was the cause of onr right giv
ing way so suddenly. They were ordered lo
tali back, and having to go through an old
Aeld which exposed them to the bullets of the
enemy, they look it at a run. tor about three
miles we endured the hottest sun and most la
tiguing march it was ever my lot lo experience
Some of the meD gave out by the way and were
raptured by the enemy, and many *ql them
could hardly drag their weary leet along when
they reached the intantry linee. 1 would have
dropped by the wayside if it bad not been lor
the kindness of Lieut. Col. Bird, who, when 1
was almost exhausted, allowed me to ride his
horse, he marching at the head of his regiment
on foot, ever with hia usual kindness looking
after the welfare of hie command.
Gol. Anderson, with his brigade, consisting
of the 1st, 81, 8th aod 10th Confederate n ■’
mentB and the 5th Georgia, always occupii a
prominent position; but I notice that wheL a
Agbt iB coming ou, be is always Dear the 5ib
Georgia; it being a child of bis raising, he feqls
be can always couflde in its honor and ability.
1 particularly noticed In this retreat Generals
'Wheeler and Kelly. They were very cool and
deliberate in their duties, passing where tho
bolls were falling as though there was no enemy
about. Gen. Kelly is a very young man and
now commands the division ws are in ; he rides
