PUBLIC notice is hereby given, in purfuamce of the
aof Congress pafled on the 6th day of July 1797,
entitled, u An Aft laying Duties on Stamped Vellum,
Parchment, and Paper,” and the ad pafled on the 15 th day
of December 1797, entitled, “ An Ad to postpone for a
limited Time the Commencement of the Duties imposed by
the Ad, entitled, An Ad laying Duties on Stamped Vel
lum, Parchment, and Paper,” ‘iTiat, from and after the
ift day of July ensuing, the several Stamped Duties here
after enumerated will be levied and colleded throughout
the United States. \
I. For every skin oH piece of vellum or parchment, or
(heet or piece of paper, upfn which shall be written or
printed any or either of tire instruments or writings follow
ing, to wit: i
Any certificate of natttrtAr;<Mfon, 5 dollars.
Any licenle to pra&Ub, if of tire admiftioft,
enrolment, or regiftfy, of any cdunfellor, solicitor, attor
ney, advocate, or prodoj, its any court of the United
Stares, 1 o dollars . ProvUkd i rim a certificate in any
one of the courts of the United States for one of the said
offices (hall, so far as relates to the payment of tlie duty
afore Paid, be a fufficrent admifiion in ail the courts of the
United States for each and every of the said offices.
Any grant or letters patent under the leal or authority
of the United States, (except for lands granted for military
services) 4 dollars.
Any exemplification or certified copy of.any such grant
or letters patent, (except for lamb granted for military
services) 2 dollars.
Any charter pjtrty, bottomry, or refpondentia bond, 1
dollar.
Any receipt or otlrer difcharjre for or on account of any
legacy left by any will or other testamentary instrument, or
for auy ihare or part of a personal estate divided by force
of any statute of distributions, other than to the wife, chil
dren, or grandchildren, cf the person deceased, the amount
whereof shall be above the value of 50 dollars, and shall
not exceed the value of 10c dollars,’2 5 cents.
Wlren the amount thereof flail exceed the value of 100
dollars, and shall not exceed 500 dollars, 50 cents.
And for every further sum of 500 dollars the additional
sum of 1 dollar.
Any policy of inference, or instrument in nature there
of, on any feip, vessel, or goods, infered from one diUriel
to another in the United States, J 5 cents.
From th£ United States to any foreign port or place,
when the sum for Which iofiurance h made shall not Exceed

When the sum infered shall exceed coo dollars, 1 dol
lar.
Any exemplification, of what nature soever, that fkaJf
pass the leal of any court, otherthan such as it may be the
duty of tjhe clerk of such court to furnife for the use of the
United States, or feme particular ihte, 50 cents.
Any bond, bill Angle or penal, foreign or inland bill-of
exchange, promiflbry note or other note, other than any
recognizance, bill, bond, or other obligation or contra#
made to or with the United States, or any state, or for
their use refpedlively:
If above 20 dollars, and not exceeding 100 dollars, i o
cents.
If above 100 dollars, and not exceeding coo dollars,
25 cents.
If above 500 and not exceeding tooo dollars, 50 cents.
And if above 1000 dollars, ,75 cents.
Provided , that if any bonds or notes Audi be payable at
or within 60 days,Tuch bonds or notes shall be fobjecl to
only two fifth parts of the duty aforefaid, viz.
If above 20 dollars, and not exceeding 100 dollars, 4
cents.
If above 100 dollars, and not exceeding sgo dollars,
10 cents.
If above 500 dollars, and not exceeding 1000 dollars,
20 cents.
If above 1000 dollars, 30 cents.
Any notes iflued by the Banks now established, or that
may hereafter be established, within the United States, o
ther than the notes of such of die said Banks as shall agree
to an annual compofitkm of one per centum on thr- annual
dividends made by such Banks to their ftockhoiders respec
tively, according to the following feale:
On all notes not exceeding 50 dollars, for each dollar,
6 mills.
On all notes above 50 dollars, and not exceeding 100
dollars, 50 cents.
On all notes above one hundred dollars, and not exceed
ing 500 dollars, 1 dollar.
On all notes above 500 dollars, 2 dollars.
Any protefl or other notarial a €L, 25 cents.
Any letter of attorney, except for an invalid pension,
or to obtain or fell warrants for land granted by the United
States as bounty for military services performed in the late
war, 25 cents.
Any certificate or debenture for drawback of customs or
duties for less than 500 dollars, 1 dollar.
For 500 dollars, and not exceeding 2000 dollars, 2
dollars.
For more than 2000 dollars, 3 dollars .
Any note or bill of lading for goods or merchandise to
be exported:
If from one diftri# to another diftri# of the United
States, not being in the fame state, 10 cents.
If from tlie United States to any foreign port or place.

PUBLIC notice is hereby given, That, by an a# of
Congress, pafled on the 19th day of March 1798,
the following alterations and amendments have been made
to the a#, palftd on the 6th day of July 1797, entitled,
“ An A# lay ing Duties on Stamped Vellum, Parchment,
ind Paper.” •
I. ‘The stamp duties on debentures or Certificate for
tie drawback of Customs or duties on imports are repealed.
11. A difeount at the rate of seven and one half per
centum will be allowed by the supervisors or infpedtors
refpedively to any persons, other than officers of the re
venue, wla> may purchase at one time, or procure to be
stamped, any quantities of vellum, parchment, or paper,
upon which the duties shall amount to ten dollars or upwards.
111. Stamped piper will’ be provided, and fold at the
rates preferibed by law, without any additional charge or
expence on account of the price of paper; but for stamped
parchment or vellum an additional price will be demanded
at tire rate of 50 tents for each skin of parchment, or aoo
eenti-for each fkitt of vellum, of medium fl-re, which may
be formfeed at the expence of the United States, and pro.
portioually for any lesser quantity.

IT is recommended to the Brigadiers of the refpe#iv”
Brigades to jrermit a troop of horse to be railed in every
county within their commands whose numbers will poflibly
admit of it. 4
The refpecrive troops of horse already commissioned are
required to equip theirtfelVes completely botfi vitbrefpe# to
horses and accoutrements, and to hold themselves in rcadi
nefs to take tire field at tire fliojteft notice.
The Commanding Officers of regiments and battalion*
in the firft Brigade of the firft divifiom will attend to the
difeipline and equipment of their officers and men, and
hold themselves in readiness to defend the coast, in case of
invasion from any enemy; and, in case of adlual invasion,
the officer commanding where the invasion takes place will
dispatch an immediate exprefa to the Commander in chief,
and to the Commander of the Brigade, for orders, and in
the mean time refill the enemy with all his force. The
Chatham Artillery will not leave the City of Savannah
Avithout orders hum the .Commander in -chief, except-in
fmali detachments sos rire river Savannah or Thunderbolt
river, or Augustine’s creek, for the defence of tire city.
The Commander of the Brigade, in case of actual invasion,
will, until the orders of the Commander in chief reaches
him, march, if he thinks proper, any part of the remainder
iff the Brigade to any place orpoft within the fame.
The Commanding Officer of the fecund Brigade of the
firft divilion will hold his brigade in readiness to fupporc
the firft brigade on the foorteft notice.
The other General and Field Officers are required to at
tend to the difeipline of their refpeiftive commands, and be
prepared to defend their country against any attack which,
although the Commander in chief is in strong hopes will not
take place,.it behoves all ranks of citizens to guard against
any hostile approach. -
