The lion. Capt. Capd, of his Majesty’s (loop Mutine,

Sir Horatio Nellon, K. B. to Evan Nepean, Eiq. Secre
tary, of tlie Admiralty, of which the following are copies.
Sir, Vanguard, Mouth cf tbe Nile, Augufi 7.
Herewith I have the honor to tranlinit you a copy of my ■
letter to the Earl of St. Vincent, together with a line of
battle of the Engliih and French squadrons, also a lift of
f killed and wounded* I have the pleasure to inform you
that 8 of our (hips have already top gallant yards across,
and ready for any fervicc; the others, with prizes, will
loon be ready for sea. In an event of this importance I
have thought it right to fend Capt. Capel with a copy of
my letter (to the Commander in chief) over land, which I
hope their Lordlhips will approve, and beg leave to refer
them to Capt. Capel, wlito is a moft excellent officer, and
fully able to give every Information, and I beg leave to
recommend him. to their iordthips notice. I am, &c.
, j Horatio Nelson.

off the two 13 inch mortars, all the brass guns, and de
ft royed the iron ones. 1
Vanguard, off tbe Moytb of tbe Nile-, Augufi 3,1798.
My Lord,
Almighty God has blefed his Majesty’s arms, in the late
battle, by a great viefrry over the fleet es the enemy,
whom 1 attacked at frnlet on the ift of Augufi off the
Mouth of the Nile. The enemy were moored in a strong
line of battle for defending the entrance of the Bay, (of
(hoals) flanked by munertuis gun boats, four frigates, and
a battery of guns and mortars on an island in their van; but
nothing could withstand the squadron yoflf Lotdfhip did
me the honor to place under my commandi Their high
state of diicipline is well known to you, and with the judg
ment of the Captains, together with their valor, and that
of the officers and men of every delcription, is ablolutely
irresistible,
Could any thing from my pen add to the fcliara<flers of
tM Captains I woulfl Write it with pleasure, but that is
impofiible.
I have, to regret th* loss of Capt. Weftcott of the Ma
jeftick, who was killed early in tlie action; but the fliip
was continued to be so well fought by her firll Lieutenant,
Mr. Cutlibert, that I have given him an order to command
her till yout Lord (hip’s pleasure is known.
The (hips of the enemy, all but their two rear fliips,
are all nearly difmafted; and thoie two, with two frigates,
I am sorry to fay, made their escape; nor was it, I allure
you, in my power to prevent them. Capt. Hood ni'oft
handsomely endeavored to do it; but I had no Ihip in a
condition td support the Zealous, and I was obliged to
call her in.
The support arid afiiftahce I have received from Capt.
Berry cannot be fuffieientlv exprefled. I was wounded in
the bead, and obliged to lie carried off the deck; but the
fervlce differed 110 loss by that event.- Capt. Berry was
fully equal to the important service then going on, and to
him I mult beg leave to refer you for every information
relative to the victory. He will prelent you with the flag
of the second in command, that of the Commander in chief
being'burnt in the L’Oriertt.
Herewith 1 tranunit you lifts of the killed and wounded,
and the lines of battle of ourlelves and the French. I have
the hortcr to be, ftt. - Horatio Nelson.
