ExiraM of a letter from an officer on board the Orion ,
dated Bequier Road , Augujl 9.
Sir Horatio Nelson has sent an officer to India with ,
an account of die victory; Lieut. Duval of the Zealous is ;
charged with his dispatches, and set off yesterday in a Turk
ish boat, which was.to land him in Syria, 011 Jliis way to
Aleppo. A veficl detained the day before, with dispatches
and letters’ from Buonaparte's army at Grand Cairo, will
make the Admiral’s dispatches still more interesting to our
fetdements in India, as they all tend to represent the
French army in the nioft diiaftrous situation, as w’ell from
the severities they have undergone in their march across. *
the sandy defarts as from the depredations of the Mama
lukes and Arabs, and alio from being- deprived of wine and
spirits, without which the French troops find it next to
impossible to refill the exeeffive heat, or endure fatigue. It
appears that Buonaparte meant to proceed to Suez, and
demanded transports and craft to meet him on the Nile;
but when he hears the defeat of the French fleet it will
throw him into despair, particularly as the’ squadron Sir
Horatio Nelson proposes to keep up here will effectually
cut off for fome time all communication with Alexandria.
The Guerrier being an old Ihip Sir Horatio Nelson-proposed
to destroy it, and to fend the others to England under
convoy of Sir James Saumarez, with those of our ftiips
which had fuffered moll in the action; these are, the Orion,
Bellerophon, Alexander, Majestic, Theseus, Goliah, and
Defence;” ‘ m
There were so many prisoners made that we understand
Sir Horatio determined to put them alhore as soon as he
had completed the deftrudion of the transports.
The demonstrations of joy last night Were universal, and
continued to a late hour. The Admiralty Office set the
example of an illumination, which immediately became
general, and which is expected to take place again this
- night; m
We rejoice to learn that Ministers are relblved to make
our great naval superiority effectual to the renovation of
our commerce in the Mediterranean, and the Levant: A
compad is entered into with the King of Naples, by which
the ports of Sicily are to be put into our polTeiliou, for the
defence ol his dominions, and -for the purposes of our nav<d
operations in those seas. Gen, Stewart is actually gone to
take the command, and our troops lately in Portugal are
on their way thither. A moft critical poll will be thus el->
tablifhed. Hie blockade of Malta will be formed and
continued without danger to our ftiips, as they will feke
shelter in the ports of Medina arid Syracuse, and hopes are
even entertained that the island will fall into pur hands.
Hie firft fruits of the late vidory maybe its surrender, and
its poflelfion would greatly facilitate the recovery of the
Levant trade.
October 4. Accounts dated the 27th of August were
received yesterday From Constantinople, that Nelson was
off the island of Rhodes; he had ngt destroyed the French
transports which were at Alexandria, but bad left fome of
his squadron to prevent their getting away, and had sent to ‘
the Porte for bomb veflels, &c. to enable him to destroy
them. Buonaparte had cut . off the heads of above 200
l urks for rejoicing at the vidory 4)vd” the French fleet.
His troops were very fiddy. He had expressed his deter
mination of marching into Syria, but it was thought be
would be prevented from the want- of provisions, The
Grand Siguior had removed his Vizir becauA he did ndl!
tuuik him fufficiently fiollile to the French. The Members
ol the French Mission have been all arrested and imprisoned.
