A proclamation.
WHEREAS the General Assembly of this ftale.pafled
an a (ft, on the fifteenth day of February instant,
entitled, “ An A(ft to compel all Officers, Civil and Mi
litary, to take and lublcribe an Oath to support the Conlu
tutioa thereof,” in the words following, to wit:
WHEREAS it is nccufiary that all Officers,. Civil
and Military, within this state, lliou!d be bound to iupport
and maintain the Constitution of the fame, be it therefore
enabled, That all and every Officer, Civil and Mditaiy,
holding any office under the authority of this state, by
commission or otherwise, lhall take and fublcribe the fol
lowing oath before the Clerk ol the Superior or Inferior
Courts of the county in which he may relide, or, il a State
Officer, before his Excellency the Governor for the time
being, to wit: I A. B. do solemnly swear, or affirm, (as
the case may be) that I will bear true laith and allegiance
to the State of Georgia, and, to the utmost of my power
and obferve, conform to, support, and defend the
Constitution thereof, and the Constitution of the United
States; so help me God.
il And be it further enabled , That all Officers who are
now in commission, Civil or Military, except such State
Officers as have been eledied by the General Assembly at
this present session, and have been duly qualified before his
Excellency the Governor, fliall, within the term of fix
months, take and fubferibe the aforefaid oath, in manner
and form aforefaid, which shall be made of record by the
Officer before whom it is taken; and in case of refui’al or
negledt of any Officer, his office shall be considered null
and void, and his Excellency the Governor is hereby au
thorized and required to fill up such vacancy in the fame
manner as if it had been madeffiy death, relignation, or
removal from the diftriift; and in case any Sheriff, Clerk
of the Superior or Inferior Court, or any other Officer
having office or trust under the authority of this state,
lhall negledt or refufeto take the aforefaid oath, in man
ner and form aforefaid, within the term of fix months,
their aft or afts, as they appertain to the laid office, lhall
be considered null and void.”
I HAVE THEREFORE THOUGHT FIT to iffie
this my proclamation, notifying and requiring all Officers,
Civil and Military, within this state, compi’Shended in the
said aft, to conform thereto, by appearing before the pro
per Officer and taking the said oath, within the period
thereby*! united, as they will answer the contrary at their
peril.
Given under my hand, and the great seal of the
said state, at the Statthoufe in Louisville, this
eighteenth day of February, in the year of our
Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety
nine, and in the twenty-third-year- of American
Independence.

of the State of Georgia, That the Justices of the Inferior
Courts of the several counties lhall, on the firft Monday in
April next, meet at the Courthouses in their refpeftive
counties, and nominate- two Justices of the Peace in each
Captain’s diftrift, agreeably to the sth feftion of the 3d
article cf the Conllitution, and certify and tranfinit the
fame to his Excellency the Governor:”
Be publilhed in the Louisville, Savannah, and Augusta
Gazettes, for the information of the Justices of tlse Infe
rior Courts of the several counties in the state, and all other
persons whom it may concern.
