VIENNA, April it. I
ON the nights of the 16th and 17th the Euglifn mi
nister, lord Minto, received couriers from Constan
tinople, announcing the fafc landing of the Britifli troops
in Egypt on the Bth of March. The fort ot Aboukir, as
is Hated, was taken by the Britifli by storm. Gen. Aber
crombie intended to march with his army towards Cairo,
—•where he was to join the grand vizier, and where the Bri
tilh. had a number of friends. Fifteen thousand Copts
were joined to the French army. It was resolved at A
boukir to garrison the fame with the troops of the captain
pacha. ■*
It is faid.that a certain court docs pofitiyely infill that
the business refpe&ing the restitutions in Germany should
Hot commence before all foreign troops had quitted the
empire, to prevent theieby any armed compullion.
Rochefort, April 16. Yesterday arrived a ship from
the Isle of France after a.paflage f72 days. The news
brought by this arrival is, that they left that place in the
bed date of defence possible, and that the Britifli had been
repulsed by the Dutch in an attack made by them againd
Batavia. ‘J'he above ship brought a cargo worth two mil
lions of livres tournois.
Hamburgh, April 15. The Danes dill continue a
mong us; the contribution of 6300 marks exadled daily
from us for their support has been reduced to 3600.
Among other traits equally honorable to the prince royal
of Denmark the following is worthy of particular notice:
On the day of battle, and in a situation particularly ex
posed to danger, several officers entreated him to retire;
the prince replied with the mod dignified composure,
“ Gentlemen, I thank you for the zeal which you mani
fed for my fafety, but, being placed by Providence at the
head of lb brave a nation, it is incumbent on me to set
them a good example.” *
Copenhagen, April 21. The Imperial Ruffian minis
• ter, M. Von Lifakewitfch, yesterday received inftru&ions
from his court to fignify to admiral Parker that it was the
wilh of the emperor to adjud the misunderstanding between
Russia and England. A fad failing cutter was dilpatched
to admiral Parker, in the Baltic, to give him inftru£lions’
as soon as possible before the Ruffian and Englifli fleets
might meet. Similar orders were likewise sent to the
Ruffian fleet.
London, February -A. On the 3d indant, at night, a
large linen manufactory, belonging to meffrs. Littlewood
and Kerby, near Oxford road, Manchester, suddenly took
fire, and burnt with the mod deftruCtive fury for a con
siderable time. The catadrophe was dreadful, as a num
ber of boys and girls who were immured in the upper part
of the buildings at labor fell miserable victims to the flames.
Three or four young wnen jumped from the upper dory,
and we are told not one survived. A more heart rending
fight never was witnessed: Several of the unfortunate
children were seen running through the flames in a date
of diflraZfion, without the mod didant possibility of escap
ing; one boy was seen fufptnded by his hands to a beam,
from whence the poor creature dropped into the body of
the fire. We have been informed that about 40 were burnt
to death, mostly children. The greater part we hear were
in the highest room, to which they afeended by a ladder
through a trap door.
jAprl* *4* Tins cTjv uirpatenes were received vrte
admiralty from lord Keith, containing an account of the
Britilh troops under gen. Abercrombie having effected a
landing in Egypt.
The rumor is revived that 15,000 troops from India had
joined him.
April 25. Six battalions of infantry and two of light
cavalry are under embarkation orders as a reinforcement
to fir Ralph Abercrombie’s army in Egypt.
Letters from Constantinople of the 10th of March an
nounce that 3000 Albanians have been enlifled by the
Britifli army, and are with fir Ralph Abercrombie.
Extraß cf a letter from Plymouth, dated Thursday
evening lajl.
“ Came in the schooner Speedwell, lient. Tomlicfon,
after a passage of 8 weeks from off Aboukir. Lieut.
Tomlinlon was landed at Mount's Bay, and set off for
town with dispatches. Lieut. Jump, lately of the Sprightly
cutter, funk by Gantheaume’s lquadron, came passenger,
on parole, from Mahon, where had arrived, on the 27th
of February, the Phebe, of 36 guns, capt. R. Barlow,
.With her prize, L’Afrieain, of 48 guns, and 700 troops
and teamen, with bores, for Egypt, taken after a mod
gallant and well fought aCtion of three hours, in which
the Phebe had only one man killed and fix wounded.
The daughter on board L’Africain was immense, having
no less than 300 seamen and marines killed and wounded.
L’Africain is repaired and commissioned. The Phebe was
to fail on the 6th of March with aconvoy for England.”
Cork) April 14. Yesterday fir Henry Hays was tried
for forcibly carrying off mil's Pike, of (kirk, with intent
to marry her. The trial was not over before jo o’clock
at night, when a molt refpe&able jury brought in a verdict
Guilty , but recommended him to mercy.
Mil's Pike gave a clear account of the facts, and seemed
totally unembarralTed on the occasion. Sir Henry behaved
with extraordinary composure, and expressed a wilh that,
as he had been found guilty by the laws, and a jury of
his country, the judge would order him for immediate ex
ecution. The judge with feeling and humanity declined.
A point of law was left to be argued by the 12 judges.
From the excellence of his character, in other refpects,‘his
charitable and humane disposition, and the refpeCtability
of his connexion's, it is generally thought that he will be
pardoned, particularly as it appears that no personal vio
lence was offered to mil’s Pike, except in forcing her from
her friends, to whom Ihe was restored immediately after on
her rcfufal to marry him. Her friends are of the firft con
fequetice in this city, and do not wifti to pulh the matter
further.

Elephant, and Desiree, got on ground, owing to the dif
ficulty of the navigation. The fil'd arrive of the truce
was refpeCting the delivery of a 74 gun floating battery
which after striking hoisted her-colors; the Danish officers,
in an interview with lord Nelfftn, denied Ihe had ever
struck; lord Nellbn replied, “ Upon my honor flie did,?’
and added, “ if (lie was not immediately given up to the
boats he would haul down the flag of truce;” the Danish
officers laid, “ they Wished to treat with lord Neffon in
person;” “ I am lord Nelson,” replied the hero, “ lee,
here is my fin,” at the fame time throwing aside his green
dreadnought, Ihewing the Hump of his right arm, and ex
poling also his three liars; the ihip was immediately given
up. A letter from an officer on board the Ganges lays,
“ Our prizes being chiefly hulks, and their hulls moll
marvelously Ihot to pieces, we fliall be obliged to destroy
the mod of thipm; but there are 11 fine new 74’s in the

Chillicothe, in the North Weft Territory. Irnpreffibns
upon paper of both Tides of this coin have been sent by
John S. Wills, elq. to a gentleman in this city. They
appear to.be Chinele characters. Upon presenting them to
mr. Peale, for his mufenm, he produced four pieces of
copper coin procured at different times from China, which
are exaCtly similar to tlie one found in the spring at Chil
licotlie, as far as judgment can be formed from comparing
them with the impression of the latter upon paper.. The
Chillicothe coin is now In the possession of governor St.
Clair.
June 4* Three 74’s, one 64, and 15 gun boats, un

place in tins town. A number of perlbns who had been

to take ibine rcfreftiment. A short time after thev had
met mr. John Bates, wit!) other citizens who had not been
working on the roads, came in. Immediately after an al

Bates knocked or puflied Bowman nearly clown; the com

the company and decide their quarrel, to which Bowman
agreed. They left the house, went to the edge of the bank
near the lower end of Water street, separate from the com

l’eparated, and both made towards the house they had left,
but, horrid to relate! the former, unable to reach the house,
seated himfelf on a dump; the persons from the house rail
to hisaffiftar.ee, but too late to afford him relief! He
expired! On immediately examining his body it was found
he had been stabbed in (even different places; one in the
pit of his stomach, which, from the depth of the wound,
was luppofed to have been the fatal stroke. ’Hie unfor
