November 6. Remarkable fuicules, A blacksmith
having taken the fatal resolution of putting an end to his I
exigence, and not leaving a convenient inftrament at hand, j
changed an old gun barrel, which he had in his Ihop, with j
a brace of bullets, and putting one end into the lire of his |
forge, tied a firing to the handle of'fvis fid lows, by pulling j
of which he could make them play while he was fit a,con
venient distance; kneeling down, he then placed his head
at the mouth of the barrel, and moving the bellows by
means of the firing, they blew up tlie fire, he keeping his
head with aftouifliing ffimnefs, and horrible deliberation,
in that position, till the farther end of the barrel was To
heated as to kindle the powder, the expiofioir of which in
stantly- drove the bullets through his brains;

after ringing it fume time among the crowd, bawled out,
“ O yes, O yes, O yes, all manner of persons concerned
are desired to take notice, that it is the dean of St. Pa
trick’s will and pleaiure that the echoic* be put off till this
hour to-morrow: So God lave the king and his reverence

perfed; only fome, more tunning than the rest, swore they
would not lose another afternoon, for that tlie dean, who
was a very comical nun, might take it into his head to
put off the eciipib again,, and so make fools cf them a se

An elderly gentleman in the neighborhood of Hanover
square requested his female attendant to purchafc him a
ticket in tlie last Toly Triill lottery. The order was im
mediately complied with; and the young woman made the
best of her way to the nearest office, (which we believe
was Hodge’s, St. James’s street) and there made the
choice of No. 1 5,705, for which Ihe paid tight guineas.
The ticket was depolked in a drawer, and the gentleman
never law the number till the fair purchaftr brought him
the agreeable news of the ticket fifing drawn a prize of
20,000!. He received the news like a philosopher, and
gave directions to his broker to fell the prize, aud lav the

The Force cf Prejudice . A lady cf exquisite beauty
i and great accomplishments, the wife of a gentleman cf
high rank in Calcutta, fliortly after her arrival there, was
delivered of lier firft child, which was a female. Immedi
ately after her birth it was intruded, as is the custom in
the east, to a native wet nurse. When the lady was fuf
ficiently recovered to observe the attendants who were a
bout her, particularly the nurse who had the care of the
child, ihe was struck with inexprelilble horror at the idea
of her child taking nourilhment from the breafe of a black
woman; a deep melancholy took pefleifion of her mind,
which the arguments of her numerous friends, in addition
to those of her hufoand, who, on other occasions, was
nioft eloquent, were unable to remove or aftuuge, When
all hope of diifipating the gloom -to which her prejudice
had reduced her were given over, and her husband was
brought nearly to despair, a military gentleman, well ac
quainted with him. and lately arrived at Calcutta, on be
ing informed of the circumstance, requested he might be
permitted to pay his rel’pedls to the lady, which was im
mediately granted. When tlie cause of her sorrow had
been dated to him by the lady herfelf, wlvo declared that
ftie diftimftly perceived the child grow darker every dav,
and that fiie verily believed before Ihe was a month older
(lie would be as black as the nurse, the gentleman, taking
her kindly by the hand, said, 44 My dear madam, why
do you fuffer such ridiculous fancies to take pofleliion of
your mind, and render you so very miserable? I myfeif
have seen in the habit of eating mutton for more tl an 40
years, and I have not yet the leak appearance of wool
upon any part of my body.” This laughable observation
bad a better effect than all her hu(band’s moral arguments,
and immediately occasioned a return of her usual cheer
fulnefs and vivacity. The mother and daughter are dill
living, and the latter, in Ipite of the black nurse, is as
beautiful and fair as an angel.

December 29. We have great fatisfa&ion in stating,
tliat, by an overland dispatch, received yesterday at the
India House, accounts have reached this country of the fafe
arrival at Sydney Cove, in New South Wales, of the La
dy Nelson, commanded by lieut. Grant, aveftel of 60 tons
only, conftrucled under the immediate direclion of capt.
Schank. Her pa f age from the Cape of Good Hope to New
South Wales was only ten weeks, in which she encountered
t variety of weather, but arrived without the imrdteit tlam
?ge, and with her eiew in the mod perf-dl health. The
letters from governor King are dated in March last. The
Lady Nelson had then failed to proftcute those clifeoveries
on the coasts of that immense country for which she was
sent from home. The utility of this veftel was strongly
acknowledged by governor King, and there can be no doubt
but we (hall soon hear of important additions to the confin
ed knowledge as yet gained of that country. It was fear
ed, before she failed from England, that it was impossible
for fitch a veflel to circumnavigate the globe. The doubts
iipon tiiis point are happily removed by tlie fafe arrival of
the Lady Nelson, and the great utility is further proved of
the Aiding keels, the invention of the officer above named.

has reached him, of an armament having failed from BreSf
