LOI\ r li)OH, Auy 23.
ON ThurUay morning, about 4 o’clock, the soldier
on guard di ‘.’covered a hre that had broken nut at the
Gepoiitory at Woolwich warren. *1 he alarm bells were
rung, and the drums beat to arm a, when every effort was
immediately ufUT t;i stop its prog re ft. At firft the geimrtl
apprehension was of the moft serious nature, and this al ariit
was greatly increased by lymptoms of fome incenuuity
dcligns, flames bursting out from three or four places at
the lame time, ihe greatest precautions were taken to
preserve that Heady and cool* attention which is the fe-urce
ol every hope and excellence on such a monlentoas occa
sion. As Icon as tee drums had beat to arms the gates of
warren were lout, to the exclulion ol the town’s people,
who in their officious zeal have pro- 1 , lceck that con
fuboii which it was the wish of the mditafy powei*to pre
vent. I owards 5 o’clock the fire raged with unccmmcn
fury, threatening the clcffruftion of all tlie adjoining
btildiilgs. When it Spread nearer and nearer to the labor
atory - lie consequences of i'uch an explolion wore so truly
alarmxKg that at one time, to prevent a greater evil, it
was in contemplation to batter it down with cannon. ‘Hie
wind, howsver, very * Ttunatelv confined the devaftat'ron
to the depolitorv; tor, had it blown from another quarter,
the nv ft irrttlhgent men are of opinion that n t only the
laboratory aid warren, but nearly the whole town cf
vv 00 wich, would have been reduced to ruins. After two
bou-.s i ‘.viable exerpun on the part of tlie loldiers, fire
iln n, and lome of the ichabitants of the town wild were
afterwards admitted, tlie fury of the flames began .0 abate,
and th : fire was gradually nattered in such a manner as to
.iil'pt'l every alarm for its further progress. The firft and
chief care was to remove the bombs u,'d moitars from tlie
imminent danger in which they were situated. Besides
the fears for the laboratory, in another building adjoining
wei-e about 6coc gun carriages, and v„ft quantities .of am
munition in ftoreboufes and workihops. With tbe excep
tion of three mortars, which made a terrible” explolion in
deed, all the articles of a precarious nature were removed*
The damages, according to the best accounts which could
be collect ‘d, v, re infinitely more than might hwe been
expected from the time of tbe dnr ition of the fire; the
wit oleos the curioliies, from the confufion natural to such
a icene, became the victims of the implacable flames; they
conlifted cf arms of a rare kind, J ippoo Saib’s gun, India
wallpieces, a variety of cannon, rockets, in fliort almcft
even- articlemfed in the military art, together with ever
fpecimen of warlike weapons, and, what was the moll re
markable curiosity of all, the model of Gibraltar, which
was also completely destroyed. Report eflimates the lofis
at upwards ot 130,000 b fielding, although nominally it is
{rated at halt a million, fome fay a whole million; but. be
that as it may, the damages are certainly immense. It is
not yet known how the salamity happened, and therefore
various rumors are iu circulation. Two persons are laid
to be in custody on suspicion that it was the operation of a
diabolical dtlign.
No person belonging *•-> tbe depository v, as in tbe builds
ing wlien tbe fire commenced. Two men, it is said, were
killed in attempting to pull down a part of the walls.
Yesterday all cause of alarm had ceased, although, as
on the extinguifhment of all great fires the dying embers
were still furious, and from every appearance promised to
continue burning for fome da\s longer.
June 22. The corporation of merchants in Glasgow
have come to a resolution, “ ‘That a fubfeription fin,ll be
immediately opened, for the purpol’e of erecting, without
de*lay, a statue o! the right hon. William Pitt in the city
of Glasgow.”
Within the space of two months 47 filicides have been
committed at Vienna, and it is said to be in contemplation
to order that the dead bodies of those who fliall kill them
fidves fliall be hung on a gallows by the public executioner,
in order to cleter others from the commilfion of this des
perate act.
The expedition sent from Genoa against the famous rob
ber known by the name of the devil has completely failed,
and that depredator, with his banditti, continues his de
predations in the environs of that city to such an extent
as almoltt to prevent any intercourse with it by land. Ac
cording to letters from-Geno* of the 22d ’ult. he has
removed his headquarters from Capenardo to the Appenine
mountains; He lately made proposals to the Genoefe go
vernment, as an independent power, demanding for each
of his
coniideration of which film, and a complete amnesty, they
would henceforth lead an honest life.
