To the EDITOR.
Sir,
WALKING in the burial ground at Simon’s Town, I
met with the following lines 04 the tombftoue of an of
ficer in his tiiajefty’s service:
Reader, beneath this uru I lie,
And hold myfelf content.
Look, it you please, pi-ay what care f,
Since now my life is spent?
I’m dead, dnd that’s enough t’ acquaint
A man pf any feme,
That, if he’s looking for a faint,
He mUft go farther hence!
Frdnl and fenle of religion, as well as decendy, I solicited
for their removal, and obtained it; for if, truly, pro
fanenels fufiured to invade the peaceful mansions of
the dead, if the Cause of God and religion cannot meet
a quiet afyium among the tombs of the departed, where,
alas, is (lie to fly? To vindicate her cause I coinpoled
the folio whig substitute, the infertioti of which will
much oblige ydur very obedient servant, if the insertion
of the whole does not take up too much of your ufefui
and entertaining work.
’tis an awful thing to die,
To pals that bourne riiyftenous, from whence
No traveller returns! The spirit's fed! !
Ah, whither is if gone? What diltant realms
Receive the aerial visitant, that erst
With llrtfc, with thought, with aftion, vigor, fire|
Quicken’d these now poor, pallid, cold remains—
Sepultered wreck of frail humanity!
But whither gofie? can Rcafon's feeble ray
Uluihe the vast impenetrable gloom,
1 hat fjihcthing after death! Could e'er the fkilt,
I lie depth 6f ancient academic lore,
With tlie proud boasting of the stoic fchool,
I'lie form illusive feize?~Ah, no, in vain they
Spread their flimfy cobwebs to ensnare
The inquiring, anxious, fearful, doubting mind*
Ke/igTOtt—i-Holy Maid, to thee ’twas giv'u
To blaze refulgent ’mid the awful lhades
Os terror’s ghastly king—’tis thine to yield
T iie golden hope of future, brighter days,
To soothe the wretched in alHiftion’s hour,
And lead the Soul departing to its God.
