To the TANKEE PHILOSOPHER.
PERRj.II me, sir, to . condole with you on your un
fortunate disappointment of a “ sentimental” chat
with a female, whom custom has debarred from such in
tercourse. As such a custom is repugnant to .sexual feel
ings, I am not surprised it should be so to j ours; and the
meiapci.cly effeift. it has had on your £ * philosophy” is a
natural consequence. The “ deference” with which you
complain before the “ tribunal of the public” of female dif
fidence is pertinent, and jour intentions I hope duly ap
preciate.!. How pleasing is the idea of innovations in so
ciety! and how laudable the pursuit of reprobating the de
generacy of the times! How much it is to be regretted
that these philosophers who have endeavored to new-model
society should swell, burst, aid decay, in the luxury of
their own imagination! We are every where surrounded
with evils. Ihe female part of our commun.ty disdain the
male, and / that means render them “ incapable of laud
able action, and letter tiieir minus 111 disappointment.”
Unfortunate men! how cruelly are you used! even the
unfeeling daughters of Africa would have more compassion
upon you. Society, sir, is on the brink of ruin, and even
we females begin to tremble; an innovation in our man
ners is absolutely necessary—yours, sir, is of such a na
ture that I am greatly interested in its success.
1 he Unknown Female.

SONG—THE CtIAUMING KITTY.
IN a vessel of my own I have oft ta’en a trip,
ai ‘ christen’d her the Charming Kitty;
1 ■ 10ugh not quite SO big as a three'mast ship,
Yet she look when at sea qnite as pretty.
Cupper is lrer bottom, and her planks are sound,
And t.ieu, not a sloop, from the bead to the poop,
Is so timber’d, lerigg’d, caulk’d, and painted all round;
Her canvass and coraage are all in their places,
Her anchors and grapnells, and lanyards and braces,
Her mainsail and foresail, and topsail ?nd cluelines,
Her sorouds and her yards, and her blocks and her bow
lines,
Her ratlines, her steerage, her capstern and cable,
A it’n lads who to work are both willing and able.
Anciior heave! taking leave, oft we go, Yeo, ho!
J’ 11 ]* S;J h* catch the gale—nothing dread—heave the lead;
1 ill in port—that’s \our sort—then again in the ocean.
D ye ye see I’ve a notion, no seaman to own how she trips
vvoil’d refuse,
Like a tar, upon shorn, in his dancing shoe.-,.
\\ lien war added storms to the storms of the wave,
l ventur’d to sea bold and heartj';
fDeterniin and for England r*nJ Ireland to brave
Death, the Devil, and great Bonaparte.
Peace is the fashion, and Commerce afloat,
Not a brig, nor a hoy, can you better emplojq
For passage, or freightage, than my little boat:
Her guns are ashore, a!iu, instead of such lading,
In broadcloth, and hardware, and silks, she is trading:
In hides, and in coaches, in pinknies and ponies,
In buckles and buttons for French macaronies;
To change for tobacco, and rice, and molasses,
Cheese, butter, and c rubric, and large looking glasses.
Indian Canes, British grains,
Burton a!.-, fresh or stale,
Spanish blades, pallisades,
Sugar-candy, gin and brandv,
Bottled Port—that’s your sort;
And while no embargo
Is laid on my cargo,
I’m as brisk in my trade with Turks, Christians, and Jews,
Asa tar upon shore 111 Ins dancing shoes.
THE GERMAN.
An old German, who had been condemned to be exe
cutcu foi some Oianice, on ms way to the gallows, was
very deliberately smoking his pipe. When he arrived at
the place ot execution lie took his pipe from his mouth,
and put it in the burton hole of his coat. He mounted
the cart, which was immediately driven from under him,
but by his weight the rope accidentally broke, and in hi?
fall to the ground his pipe met with the same fate. The
old man, rising slowly, and rubbing his eyes, perceived
the broken nieces ot his pipe, exclaiming, “ Look now!
nit your tamn nonsense , you make me broke mine
bibe.”
THE EXPEDITIOUS PAINTER.
A certain nobleman having built a chapel had amind the
staircase leading to it should be ornamented with some
Scripture history, which he at last determined should be
tlie children of Israel passing through the Red Sea, and
the Egyptians pursuing them. A painter was employed
on this occasion, and fell to work immediately; and, after
he had daubed the wall from % to bottom with red paint,
lie called to his lordship, and told him the work is done.
—Dene, quoth the peer-—What’s done? Where arc the
children of Israel?—My lord, they are gone over, replied
the painter—But zounds! Where are the Egyptians then?
Flie Egyptians, my lord! Why they are drowned to be
sure!
